Questions for Richard Blumenthal BY Rachel Smith

The following is from a telephone interview with Democratic senate nominee Richard Blumenthal. Student Rachel Smith questioned him about many prob- lems facing Connecticut and the United States as a whole, as well as some questions about his personal life. Here are his answers.

-Why did you choose Wilbur Cross to host your rally? Both President Clinton and I graduated from Yale Law School in 1973, so the city of New Haven holds special meaning for both of Wilbur Cross and us is a school with a long, rich tradition in the city.

-What will you do to help lower the achievement gap between urban and suburban schools? Every student deserves access to a quality education. Productivity, prosperity and progress all hinge on it. We must do everything we can to close achieve- ment gaps and improve dropout rates at both urban and suburban schools. And we need to promote innovation in education that allows students to receive the education that best meets their needs. Initiatives like Connecticut’s CommPACT program, which allows schools to be managed by a coalition that includes teachers, administrators, parents, and students themselves, are good examples of how we can successfully create new educational environments that assist even those students who are hardest to reach.

-What do you plan to do to support public schools that have been hit hard by budget cuts? The federal government needs to keep to its promise to fully fund elementary and secondary education. As Attorney General, I represented the state in challenging No Child Left Behind as an unfunded mandate. In the 6HQDWH,ZLOO¿JKWIRUIHGHUDOHGXFDWLRQODZVWKDWZLOO ¿QDOO\JLYHRXUWHDFKHUVDQGVFKRROVWKHUHVRXUFHVWKH\ need, and have been promised for so many years, to do right by their students.

-Many cities in CT (namely New Haven) have large illegal immigrant populations. What are your views regarding treatment of and rights for illegal immi- grants? I believe that we need a comprehensive federal immi- JUDWLRQSROLF\WRGHDOZLWKWKHKXJHÀDZVLQRXUFXUUHQW system.

-People tend to think that politicians are invincible, have there ever been any moments of doubt during your political career? How did you overcome them? As my wife often reminds me, I am not perfect. I make mistakes, just like everyone else. For me, the best way to stay focused and positive is to go out every day and do what I think is best for the people of Connecticut.

- You are a staunch supporter of veteran rights, why are their issues so important to you? 7KHEUDYHPHQDQGZRPHQZKR¿JKWDQGVDFUL¿FHIRURXUIUHHGRPVDUHDOOWRRRIWHQOHIWEHKLQGZKHQWKH\UHWXUQKRPH2QHRIWKHJUHDWVKDPHVRIWKLV country is that we have not taken care of our veterans. Today, more than 131,000 veterans are homeless. The unemployment rate among veterans has doubled in the past three years. Twenty percent of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while the average veteran must wait almost half a year for a claims decision from the Veterans Administration. I have called for a comprehensive “No Veteran Left Behind” SURJUDPWRHQVXUHWKDWWKHGHSWKRIRXUFRXQWU\¶VFRPPLWPHQWWRRXUYHWHUDQVUHÀHFWVWKHGHSWKRIWKHLUVDFUL¿FHVRQRXUEHKDOI

-What are you views regarding “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”? I support the position of the President and the Joint Chiefs of Staff that this discriminatory policy should be abolished as soon as possible.

-What are some of the ways that teens can participate in modern politics? There are plenty of ways teenagers can become involved in politics. These include talking to your older brothers and sisters, your parents, grandparents and older friends about the importance of voting, or volunteering on a campaign – I know a Democratic Senate candidate who can always use more vol- unteers! Most importantly, you can participate by reading the paper, watching the news, and becoming informed. While you may not be able to vote this year, the choices that are made in this election will affect you for years to come and when you are old enough to vote, you will be able to make an informed decision about the leaders you want representing your interests. Let me break down the new features of each new release for you. The new iPod Touch has a bunch of new features that the old iPods don’t even compare to. Firstly, it has a camera, both on the front and back. That means you can now use FaceTime, a new feature on the iPhone as well that is very similar to Skype. In short, it’s a way to video call someone. Un- IRUWXQDWHO\\RXFDQRQO\GRWKLVRYHUZL¿DQGZLWKL3KRQHQHZL7RXFKXVHUV only. Although these are unfortunate, the new iPod is also packed with some more awesome features. The retina display shows the iPod in much better quality, especially on safari, where the better quality could be greatly used. Also, just like the iPhone, you can now take HD videos thanks to the camera on the back. There is no doubt the new iPod will be a great hit. :KHUHGR,VWDUWRQWKHQHZL3RGQDQR":HOO¿UVWRIILWKDVDWRXFK screen! It also has a built-in radio. Downside? It’s extremely tiny! There was screaming, yelling, chanting, and cheering all throughout the J\PRQ:HGQHVGD\6HSWHPEHUQGGXULQJRXU¿UVWSHSUDOO\ of the year. This pep rally was extremely different, and more memorable, than our past pep rallies. Our usual pep rallies in- volved a cheer or two by the Lady Governors and then were followed up by a basketball game between students and teach- ers, the New Haven Fire Department and teachers, or the New Haven Police Department and teachers. But this time, there were performances from our band, music was played by one of our security guards, and people cheered. I enjoyed the rally, and apparently, others did too. When asked about the pep rally, people had many dif- ferent opinions. 11th grader Romaine White said, “It was fun.” “The G and B houses are the livest, the other houses are wack,” 11th grader Keyaira Reddick added. Nikko Colon, who is also an 11th grader, had a lot to say DERXWWKHSHSUDOO\DVWKLVLVKLV¿UVW\HDUKHUHDW:LOEXU&URVV “The drummers were good!” he said. “I noticed that some of the sports teams are pretty small though, I think more kids should try out”. he later added that “G and P house were the loudest ones there.” I overheard someone in my section of the bleachers ask- ing what the purpose for this pep rally was. While most of us thought of it as a good way to get out of third block, the admin- istratorss and staff thought of it as a great way to display our school spirit. Last year’s pep rally was a disappointment to the seniors, especially the ones who wanted their last year to stand out more than the previous ones. Some said that our school lacked spirit, some said that we didn’t even have any. If only we could have the pep rally atmosphere all the time.
