For more information, please contact the GRO team: [email protected] chapter �3 The Italians and the iwma Carl Levy Introduction Italians played a significant and multi-dimensional role in the birth, evolution and death of the First International, and indeed in its multifarious afterlives: the International Working Men's Association (iwma) has also served as a milestone or foundation event for histories of Italian anarchism, syndicalism, socialism and communism.1 The Italian presence was felt simultaneously at the national, international and transnational levels from 1864 onwards. In this chapter I will first present a brief synoptic overview of the history of the iwma (in its varied forms) in Italy and abroad from 1864 to 1881. I will then exam- ine interpretations of aspects of Italian Internationalism: Mazzinian Repub- licanism and the origins of anarchism, the Italians, Bakunin and interactions with Marx and his ideas, the theory and practice of propaganda by the deed and the rise of a third-way socialism neither fully reformist nor revolutionary, neither Marxist nor anarchist. -

In this chapter I will first present a brief synoptic overview of the history of the iwma (in its varied forms) in Italy and abroad from 1864 to 1881. Kim Curtis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT THE TOTAL LIBERATION ACTION RESEARCH TEAM: RE-MEMBERING PRACTICES OF HOLISTIC, CREATIVE, AND COMPASSIONATE JUSTICE MARA JUNE PFEFFER In this thesis, I argue that industrial society must radically re-evaluate and re- member its relationships with the more than human world if it wishes to pursue justice and sustainability, pursuits which are crucial to the continued existence of life on earth. I argue that those involved in justice and sustainability movements must recognize the critical intersections of animal liberation with justice for the earth and humans; and that those involved in movements for animals must find ways to practice groundless solidarity with all those resisting corporatism, patriarchy, racism, colonialism, sexism, classism, ablism, transphobia, homophobia, and ecocide. I argue that we must start here and now by coming together to form our own communities; cultivating spaces to ask critical questions; and practicing more creative, compassionate, and holistic activisms that call for the liberation of earth and all animals—both humans and other than. By cofounding and participating in the development of a Total Liberation Action Research Team at Northern Arizona University, I present evidence that the frameworks of total liberation and artistic resistance offer alternatives to dominant, mechanistic, dismembering, single- issue, one-size-fits-all organizing models and inspire more holistic, creative, and compassionate activisms that are necessary to cultivating truly just communities. -

Every form of discipline, rule and pedantry is repulsive to the sincere nobility of our vagabond and rebellious restlessness! Individualism is, for us, creative force, immortal youth, exalting beauty, redemptive and fruitful war. It is the marvelous apotheosis of the flesh and the tragic epic of the spirit. Our logic isthat of not having any. Our ideal is the categorical negation of all other ideals for the greatest and supreme triumph of the actual, real, instinctive, reckless and merry life! For us perfection is not a dream, an ideal, a riddle, a mystery, a sphinx, but a vigorous and powerful, luminous and throbbing reality. All human beings are perfect in themselves. All they lack is the heroic courage of their perfection. Since the time that human beings first believed that life was a duty, a calling, a mission, it has meant shame for their power of being, and in following phantoms, they have denied themselves and distanced themselves from the real. When Christ said to human beings: “be yourselves, perfection is in you!” he launched a superb phrase that is the supreme synthesis of life. It is useless that the bigots, theologians and philosophers do their utmost with deceitful and dialectical sophisms to give a false interpretation to Christ’s words. -

Diogo DUARTE, ‘Anarchism and the State in Portugal (1890-1911): A preliminary approach’ I could not start without thanking the invitation for me to be present here, in particular to Professor David Berry and the Anarchism Research Group. It’s a particularly generous invitation, since what I intend to present here is part of an ongoing work for my doctorate thesis, which is still in a phase that can be considered initial. As such, my presence here and the opportunity to share this work and these ideas with all of you is especially exciting for me, as I may benefit from your commentary, critique and questions. This is why I am particularly grateful for this opportunity. As the title of my talk indicates, I don’t intend to look solely at anarchism, or to anarchism in itself, but to insert it in a broader context and set of relations that marked it in a period of Portuguese history in which anarchism registered a very significant presence, especially due to its influence in the midst of the working class in the big cities, as well as in some intellectual circles. I don’t know if you are familiar with the history of anarchism in Portugal, or even with the dimension of that presence – a presence which may be compared, with no exaggeration, to that which was registered in Spain during the same period –, however, assuming that the majority isn’t familiar, during the course of this presentation I will attempt to briefly introduce a few aspects of the history of anarchism in Portugal, or accompany some of the ideas that I want to share here with commentary that may aid in explaining some aspects of that history. -

Utopianism and Prefiguration Ruth Kinna For anarchists, utopias are about action. As Uri Gordon argues, utopias are “umbilically connected to the idea of social revolution”.1 The kind of action utopia describes is a matter of debate. This essay examines how utopian thinking shapes anarchist thought and highlights some recent shifts in the political uses of utopia. Utopianism is not treated as an abstract concept or method, nor as a literary genre or place – because that is not how anarchists have understood the idea. Utopia, Gordon notes, “has always meant something more than a hypothetical exercise in designing a perfect society”. As a revolutionary idea, utopia is instead linked to the principle of prefiguration. Prefiguration has been identified as a core concept in contemporary anarchist thinking and it is increasingly invoked to highlight the distinctiveness of anarchist practices, actions and movements. In 2011, two months after the start of Occupy Wall Street, David Graeber identified prefigurative politics as one of the movement’s four characteristically anarchist principles, the other three being direct action, illegalism and the rejection of hierarchy. Hinting at the utopianism of the concept, he described Occupy as a genuine attempt “to create the institutions of the new society in the shell of the old”. -

Upon her arrival in the US from the Lithuanian region of the Tsarist Russian Empire, she immediately became actively involved in the American Anarchist Movement. Initially she professed and involved herself in the violent overthrow of the government and its institutions and the selective assassination of exploitative leaders in industry and government. After her imprisonment, she found another avenue for her anarchical beliefs in the form of women’s issues that included freedom of choice in marriage, and control over decision-making relative to her own body – issues that resonate today. This article, then, analyses her concentrated fight for women egalitarianism that has been described as the first vestiges of Anarcha-feminism. It is argued that her evolution towards feminist causes can be explained via three “Geo-moments” that was used to illustrate how her political beliefs progressed from Russian Nihilism, to violent Anarchism, and finally to Anarcha-feminism. -
