PRAYER IN THE EVENING As not all pieces were composed with instrumental RITE OF PENANCE: RECONCILIATION parts, numbering in this book is non-consecutive. Home | Contents | 1–299 | 300–599 | 600–853 | Indexes PREFACE This new, revised 2021 edition of the Solo Instrument Book contains all available instrument parts written for hymns, songs, psalms, and service music in Today’s Missal, Music Issue, and Breaking Bread. In order to facilitate the use of this accompaniment with the OCP missal program, please note the following: • ACCOMPANIMENT NUMBERS: With this revision, the accompaniment numbers have been updated, but are still referenced at the top of each song in Today’s Missal, Music Issue, and Breaking Bread as “Acc #___.” This accompaniment number will not change during the life of this revision (2021–2024), and is completely separate from the song number in the missal (which may change from year to year). The accompaniment number will be the same number in all three accompaniment books (Keyboard, Guitar, and Solo Instrument) to better accommodate ensemble playing. • BOOK ORGANIZATION: The organization of this book is similar to the last revision, as shown in the Table of Contents (see preceding page). All hymns and songs are sequenced by title in strict alphabetical order. Subsequent sections of this book reflect the order in which they occur in Music Issue: “Psalms and Canticles” (psalms in psalm number order, canticles in biblical order), “Rites” (liturgical order), “Mass Settings” (alphabetical order by Mass title, then liturgical order within), “Additional Service Music” (liturgical order), “New Music” (beginning liturgical year 2022), and “Indexes.” • NOTE ON INSTRUMENTATION DESIGNATIONS: Many songs in this volume are written for a specific instrument such as violin, flute, or B trumpet. Some parts are marked for a generic “Solo Instrument in C” (or B ). In either case, theseb designations indicate that the parts are meant to be played by a single performer.b Some songs may have multiple parts labeled by Roman numerals (ex. I, II), which indicate one instrumentalist per melodic voice. Other instrument parts, however, are written in a more flexible two- or three-stave format and are marked “Solo Instrument(s) in C” (or B )— note the “s” in parentheses. These parts always have the melody on the top staff with chord symbolsb (for those instrumentalists who improvise). There are also one or two harmony (or obbligato) lines that can work by themselves or together. Unlike the instrument parts described above, in which each part is meant to be played by one person, the more flexible format allows an instrumentalist (or multiple instrumentalists) to choose which line to play (or improvise around), knowing that all lines will work together. • CHORD SYMBOLS AND INTRO BRACKETS: Chord symbols in the Keyboard Accompaniment Book continue to match the chord symbols in the Guitar Accompaniment Book so the two instruments can be played together on all hymns and songs. Since most traditional hymns were not originally intended for the guitar, the chord symbols have been adjusted in varying degrees from the actual keyboard harmony. These chord symbols are not intended to be a harmonic realization of the keyboard part, but rather to match a progression that is practical and playable on the guitar. A footnote directing the keyboardist to play from the chord symbols when in ensemble with the guitar is given on each of these hymns. When needed, separate solo instrument parts have been provided to be used with either the written keyboard accompaniment or the chords in the guitar edition. Introduction brackets are often present for suggested introductions to each song. Dashed brackets indicate where two sections of music join to provide an Introduction. • INDEX FORMAT: The indexes that are integral for this book (“Acknowledgments,” “Index of Instruments,” and “Index of Titles”) are located in the back. Those indexes which are most helpful for liturgy planning can be found in the Master Index. It may be found in the back of your Keyboard or Guitar Accompaniment Book or downloaded in PDF format at ocp.org/products/master_index. The Master Index includes the following indexes: Supplemental Sources, Text and Music Sources, Language, Musical Style, Metrical and Alphabetical Hymn Tunes, Scriptural, Topical, Suggested Psalms for the Liturgical Year, and Liturgical. Home | Contents | 1–299 | 300–599 | 600–853 | Indexes PREFACE, cont. (2) • BEFORE RECYCLING: This accompaniment book contains only those titles currently appearing in the OCP missal program. Please be sure to compare the contents of this revised edition with the contents of your old edition for any titles you may wish to retain before recycling the old edition. A list of songs that have been deleted from the accompaniment books in this revision can be obtained by calling Customer Service at 800-LITURGY (548-8749) or contacting OCP at [email protected]. Most titles which have been deleted from the missals and accompaniment books are now available as digital editions for single-purchase download on ocp.org or OneLicense.net. The accompaniment books go through a cycle of being supplemented with new songs, then revised to include only the songs in the current edition of the missals. The schedule for these books is as follows: Liturgical year 2021 (books available Fall 2020): Revision Year Liturgical year 2022 (books available Fall 2021): Supplement Year Liturgical year 2023 (books available Fall 2022): Supplement Year Liturgical year 2024 (books available Fall 2023): Supplement Year Liturgical year 2025 (books available Fall 2024): Revision Year IMPORTANT NOTE: OCP offers a standing “Solo Instrument Supplement Subscription,” which, for a nominal fee, ensures that you automatically receive a Solo Instrument Supplement each year upon its release. If you need more than one accompaniment book, or if you wish to order Solo Instrument Supplements for the extra accompaniment books you have, please call Customer Service at 800-LITURGY (548-8749) or contact OCP at [email protected]. The first great merit here is the sound quality: there is an angelic aureola of warmth about it, excellent balance between the mighty forces deployed, tremendous dynamic range and no loss of detail despite the reverberance of the venue. None of the comparable recordings from Jochum, Barenboim and Celibidache can compete for recorded sound: Jochum’s is over fifty years old and fine for its era but decidedly wiry to modern ears; Celibidache’s live recording, although digital, is marred by audience coughing – whereas there is barely a sound here.
