Every edition of the Book of Common Prayer is bound with the psalms, largely for the convenience of worshipers in the reciting of Morning and Evening Prayer. Before 1979, the translation of The Great Bible from 1539 was the standard psalter bound with the Prayer Book. It was translated by Myles Coverdale from the Latin Vulgate and sixteenth- century German sources.

One of the distinctive features of the Anglican choral tradition is the singing of psalms to Anglican chant, developed from harmonized plainsong (Gregorian chant) in the English cathedral tradition. Choral singing of Anglican chant requires a great deal of practice and skill, and helps singers listen more carefully to each other. Anglican chant psalms are sung during Evensong and English cathedral sing them nearly every day of the year, still using the Coverdale translation. Our choir will sing the Coverdale translation of Psalm 146 this morning to a chant composed by Thomas Norris, an eighteenth-century British composer and organist. —M.A.T.
