A saint for our time . . . A Saint for our Community Celebrating the life and legacy of Archbishop Romero On Sunday, October 14, Pope Francis will lead the ceremony for the canonization of Archbishop Oscar Romero. During his time as spiritual leader of the faithful in El Salvador in the late 1970's, Oscar Romero spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations, and torture. In 1980, Romero was assassinated while offering Mass in the chapel of the Hospital of Divine Providence. Later investigations into the murder revealed that extreme-right wing politician and death squad leader Roberto D'Aubuisson had given the order. Hence, Archbishop Romero is considered a true martyr for the faith and for his witness against the injustices against the poor and oppressed.
On the week of October 22, we would like to celebrate this great saint of our times. On Tuesday, October 23, we will have a viewing of the film Romero (starring Raul Julia) at Saint Anthony’s Hall at 7:30pm (popcorn provided!). On Thursday, October 25th, there will be special bi-lingual prayer service offered in the church at 8pm. On that evening, we join our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters of this community, many of whom come from El Salvador, to celebrate the life and legacy of this man and to ask for his prayerful intercession upon our community. As Bishop Barres has written in his apostolic letter about Romero, “We take yet another opportunity to connect the Canonization, in a spirit of pastoral charity, promotion of human rights and global justice, to a call for comprehensive immigration reform for our nation that is built on the principles of the dignity of the human person, social justice, the sanctity of human life and the family, and a Good Samaritan love for the poor.”

Night in Bethlehem Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to have been in Bethlehem when Jesus was born? Now is your chance! Come join us for “A Night in Bethlehem” on Sat Dec 1st from 10:00 am to noon. You will be asked to sign the census and pay your taxes just like Mary and Joseph did. You will then go to the stable and meet Mary, Joseph and of course, baby Jesus! The rest of the morning will be spent at the various market place shops that Jesus and his family went to. There will be an activity at each shop for you and your family to participate in. Your morning will end in the Bakery shop where light refreshments will be served. Since this is a family event, at least one adult MUST stay AND participate for the children to attend. Cost is $25 per family (max of 3 children). Once again, we remind you of our parish policies concerning the reserving of Mass intentions. For the majority of the Masses we celebrate at Saint Brigid, there is only one intention taken for each particular Mass. However, permission for the Holy See has been granted to parishes to allow for a limited number of “Masses of Multiple Intentions.” We allow for four multiple intention Maasts etsh teo be celebrated each weekend (one multiple intention Mass for each of our four laangt utahge groups). These Masses are celebrated on Sunday at 8:30 am, 10:45 am, 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. We will only allow six intentions for these multiple intention Masses. Because of the large number of requests that are typically made on the day that the Mass book opens, one peron may not reserve more than five intentions that day; more requests can be made at a later date. Donation for each Mass is $20.00. We also would like to remind you that each week there is the possibility to have your loved ones remembered by donating the bread and wine to be used at all Masses that week, or to donate the candles and flowers for that week as well. The names of those to be so remembered are published in the bulletin.
