Starting with Michener's early life experiences in Doylestown (Pennsylvania), the conversation includes his family's poverty, his wanderings across the United States, and his reading at the local public library. The dialogue includes his education at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), St. Andrews University (Scotland), Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he became a social studies teacher, and Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) where he pursued, but did not complete, a Ph.D. in education. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years. Cameron While debates over the memory and representation of the National Socialist past have dominated public discourse in Germany over the last forty years, the literary scene has been the site of experimentation with the genre of the autobiography, as authors developed new strategies for exploring their own relationship to the past through narrative. Since the late 1970s, this experimentation has yielded a series of autobiographical novels which focus not only on the authors’ own lives, but on the lives and experiences of their family members, particularly those who lived during the NS era. In this dissertation, I examine the relationship between two waves of this autobiographical writing, the Väterliteratur novels of the late 1970s and 1980s in the BRD, and the current trend of multi-generational family narratives which began in the late 1990s. In a prelude and three chapters, this dissertation traces the trajectory from Väterliteratur to the Generationenromane through readings of Bernward Vesper’s Die Reise (1977), Christoph Meckel’s Suchbild. Literary Obstinacy: Violence and the Literary in Cristina Rivera Garza’s La muerte me da (2008) Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón Oberlin College Abstract Written to address the contemporary crises of violence and the exhaustion of the symbolic capacities of lit- erature in Mexico, Cristina Rivera Garza’s La muerte me da (2008) puts together a self-effacing narrative that crumbles in its attempt to give words to the reality that it faces. This article offers a close reading ofLa muerte me da so as to argue that the novel’s reflection on violence and literature operates by recurring to an engage- ment with, and through, the literary tradition which allows for both a critique of the representational ethics of literature and for an ethics of literature. It goes on to show how this literary investigation recuperates a previous aesthetic and ethical operation from the literary tradition which, when articulated with the contexts of contemporary violence, yield novel ways of thinking this relation. We might begin this essay playfully by asserting that Cristina Rivera Garza's La muerte me da (2008) is a bad detective novel. It is bad in that it fails to celebrate the detective as agent of social justice, “as the original poetic figure”, and in that it is incapable of offering a glimpse of redemption in a dark world, as G.K. Chesterton and Raymond Chandler, two masters of the craft, respectively wrote (Chesterton 645, Chandler 989). But also, and more importantly, it is bad in that it does not seek to “tell the whole story,” a normative role which, according to Mario Vargas Llosa, is the inherent tendency of all novels (“The Art of Fiction no. -

THE MILITARY CAMPTOWN IN RETROSPECT: MULTIRACIAL KOREAN AMERICAN SUBJECT FORMATION ALONG THE BLACK-WHITE BINARY Perry Dal-nim Miller A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2007 Committee: Khani Begum, Advisor Rekha Mirchandani ii ABSTRACT Khani Begum, Advisor This thesis applies theoretical approaches from the sociology of literature and Asian Americanist critique to a study of two novels by multiracial Korean American authors. I investigate themes of multiracial identity and consumption in Heinz Insu Fenkl’s Memories of My Ghost Brother and Nora Okja Keller’s Fox Girl, both set in the 1960’s and 1970’s gijichon or military camptown geography, recreational institutions established around U.S. military installations in the Republic of Korea. I trace the literary production of Korean American subjectivity along a socially constructed dichotomy of blackness and whiteness, examining the novels’ representations of cross-racial interactions in a camptown economy based on the militarized sexual labor of working-class Korean women. I conclude that Black-White binarisms are reproduced in the gijichon through the consumption practices of both American military personnel and Korean gijichon workers, and that retrospective fictional accounts of gijichon multiraciality signal a shift in artistic, scholarly, and popular conceptualizations of Korean American and Asian American group identities. iii To my father iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis coalesced with the guidance and support of many people. Chen Spring 2019 1 ABstract Ethos at the Periphery: Speakerly and Writerly Persuasions in U.S. Minority Literatures Since 1945 by Daniel Valella Doctor of Philosophy in English with a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Scott Saul, Chair This dissertation examines the complex models of rhetorical ethos that minority writers and their literary speakers have developed to persuade diverse audiences to join them in resisting structural oppressions and creating more reciprocal forms of affiliation in the post-1945 United States. While authoritarian politicians, from Adolf Hitler to Donald Trump, have aimed to consolidate mass audiences through the power of scapegoating and the deployment of “alternative facts,” writers such as Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Gordon Henry, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Sherman Alexie have worked to cultivate a different, more flexiBle and horizontal relationship Between writer and reader, or speaker and listener, through distinctive techniques in their fiction. These writers (along with their narrators, poetic speakers, and dramatis personae) forge connections with audiences through verbal expressions that illuminate shared rituals, iconographies, spiritual beliefs, locations, and ethical values—expressions, I argue, that represent neither a return to reason and rationality nor an accentuation of affect and sentimentality. -

Collective Bodies and Collective Change: Blindness, Pilgrimage, Motherhood and Miracles in Twentieth Century Mexican Literature by Rebecca Claire Suzanne Janzen A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Spanish and Portuguese University of Toronto © Copyright by Rebecca Claire Suzanne Janzen 2013 Collective Bodies and Collective Change: Blindness, Pilgrimage, Motherhood and Miracles in Twentieth Century Mexican Literature Rebecca Claire Suzanne Janzen Doctor of Philosophy Department of Spanish and Portuguese University of Toronto 2013 Abstract “Collective Bodies and Collective Change: Blindness, Pilgrimage, Motherhood and Miracles in Twentieth Century Mexican Literature” examines Mexican literature from 1940 to 1980. It analyzes representations of collective bodies and suggests that these bodies illustrate oppression and resistance in their historical context, which coincides with the beginning of a period of massive modernization in Mexico. I aim to develop a reading that interprets this imagery of collectives, unusual bodies, and blindness as more than symbols of oppression. By examining this imagery alongside representations of pilgrimage, alternative modes of motherhood, and experiences such as miracles that figuratively connect bodies, I propose that these images challenge their historical context, and can be read as a gesture towards resistance. Novels and short stories by José Revueltas, Juan Rulfo, Rosario Castellanos and Vicente Leñero present collectives, blindness and unusual bodies. My reading of their works connects these textual bodies to oppression within their historical context, in particular, by the government, intellectuals, the medical system, the Catholic Church, family structure, the landholding system, and the land’s heat, wind and drought. These representations de- individualize characters, and, as such, destroy the ideal of the modern subject who would effect ii change through individual agency. -

Back to the Future or Forward to the Past: Ocean Voyaging and Slow Travel Abstract Going back to previous modes of travel, such as walking or sailing, to ensure a future, is currently being engaged by everyone from ambling environmentalists to scientists and technologists. In Germany and in Sweden, scientists are working to develop large cargo sailing ships. These ships of the future hearken back to the past of ocean voyaging. They dovetail with contemporary literary reflections on ocean voyaging and slow travels, such as Judith Schalansky’s Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will (2009).
