This guide will, I am sure, be a great help to you in making what will, undoubtedly, be a very important decision when that time comes.” Councillor Pat Coleman Special Advisor for Housing Introduction If you are thinking about downsizing or considering moving to our senior housing scheme accommodation, please take a moment to browse our brochure, to see all that there is on offer. We know that moving home is a daunting prospect for most people; but if you feel that you want to be closer to your family, or that you don’t want to have to tackle those stairs any longer, a flat in one of our housing schemes may be right for you. This brochure provides information about the Council’s housing developments and an overview of the service which is available with this accommodation. Dartford Council’s senior schemes have been specifically designed to provide privacy and independence, but with an additional layer of security. Our tenants lead busy, independent lives, just as they would if they lived anywhere else, but with plenty of opportunities to get to know neighbours and to make new friends. The aim of our service is to help tenants sustain their tenancies and retain their independence, in a comfortable setting where they feel safe and secure. This brochure highlights the main benefits of living in one of our senior schemes, as well as some of the rules that are necessary for the safety and comfort of everyone. We deliver our service via a flexible team of fully trained Housing Scheme Officers (HSO’s). Our staff have been specifically chosen for their professional skills and expertise, so any member of our team is able to help or advise you. Personal information is always dealt with in the strictest confidence. Our HSO’s provide tenants with anenha nced housing management service. This is designedto help you sustain your tenancy. Our SHO’s are also responsible for ensuring the safety of the building including all communal areas and have been trained to deal with all kinds of emergency situations, so can be relied upon to immediately contact the relevant party, whoever that may be. The HSO role is a busy one, so our officers are unable to run errands, provide personal care, collect shopping or pensions, or pick up prescriptions. Your HSO is always happy to help in an emergency, but families should always remain the first point of contact for your continued care and welfare. When you move to a senior scheme, your existing contact with your family and friends will continue in the same way as it did before. If you do not have any family who live nearby, with your prior permission your HSO can make a referral to Social Services who may be able to provide help for the tasks you can no longer manage on your own. Your HSO cannot make any referrals without your permission. Your HSO will also be available to assist your residents association with arranging social inclusion activities, outings and events but these must be open to all tenants living in the scheme. 3 Crusader Court Keyes Road, Dartford, Kent DA1 5EG Crusader Court is an enclosed scheme consisting of 48 flats with a lift to upper floors. The scheme has a 24 hour lifeline alarm system for use when the HSO is off duty. The scheme is set in the popular area of Temple Hill in Dartford, close to the Town Centre, with a small local shopping centre close by. Crusader Court has a dedicated car park to the frontwith a secure door entry system which includes CCTV available in all flats. Tenants communal facilities include a shower room on the first floor, secure inner courtyard garden with pond and fountain, a large lounge with separate kitchen area for social meetings and activities and a fully equipped laundry (for which there is a weekly service charge). Applicants should be aged 55 years or older. Eligibility for this scheme is subject to a full needs & risk assessment. LOCAL AMENITIES: The nearest bus stop for buses to Dartford, Bluewater and Gravesend is opposite Temple Hill Square shopping • centre and a bus stop on Keyes Road on the corner of Blake Gardens will take you straight into Dartford Town Centre. The nearest NHS dentist is located at the top of St • Vincent’s Road and the nearest doctors surgery is in nearby St Edmunds Road. The nearest supermarket is the Co-op which is located • in Temple Hill Square; there is also a Tesco at the bottom of Keyes Road, and Sainsburys, Lidl and Aldi in Dartford town centre. • The main Post Office is in Dartford town centre. Refuse is collected weekly on Wednesdays, with recycling (including glass) being collected • fortnightly on the same day. OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT CRUSADER COURT: The nearest hospital is Darenth Valley Hospital, Darenth • Wood Road, Dartford DA2 8DA. Telephone 01322 428100. This scheme has a prescription delivery and collection • service, provided by the local pharmacy. Coffee mornings at 10:00 and Bingo at 19:00 every Wednesday; and a mobile hairdresser • visits every Thursday from 08:00. • Crusader Court has a guest room, which visitors can use for a small nightly fee. 4 Elizabeth Court Bennett Way, Darenth, Kent DA2 7JT Elizabeth Court is an enclosed scheme consisting of 26 flats, with a lift to the upper floor. The scheme has a 24h our lifeline alarm system for use when the HSOis off duty. This scheme is located in a rural area of Dartford and the car park to the front of the scheme has a barrier to ensure the car park is available for scheme tenants only. Elizabeth Court has a secure door entry system. Tenants communal facilities include landscaped grounds, a large lounge with separate kitchen area for social meetings and activities, and a fully equipped laundry (for which there is a weekly service charge). Applicants should be aged 55 years or older. Eligibility for this scheme is subject to a full needs & risk assessment. LOCAL AMENITIES: The nearest bus stop for buses to Dartford, Bluewater and • Swanley is in Green Street Green Road which is a few minutes walk away. There is an NHS dentist in Sutton-At-Hone, and a • convenient doctors surgery next door to the scheme. Coffee mornings are held on Tuesdays. Transport to the Meadowside day centre in Dartford can • be arranged upon request. The nearest supermarket is a small Co-op a few minutes walk away, but there is also Aldi, Lidl and Sainsburys in • Dartford town centre and Waitrose in nearby Longfield. The main Post office is in Dartford town centre. Refuse is collected weekly on Fridays with recycling (including glass) being collected • fortnightly on the same day. A window cleaning service is available once a month for a small fee. OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT ELIZABETH COURT: The nearest hospital is Darenth Valley Hospital, Darenth • Wood Road, Dartford DA2 8DA. Telephone 01322 428100. Meditation and relaxation sessions are held in the • communal lounge every Friday night. A hairdressers and a fish and chip shop are found a • few minutes walk away, and a mobile hairdresser visits the scheme every other Monday morning. • For those that like walking and scenery, there are two country parks close by. • Elizabeth Court has a guest room which can be booked by visitors for a small nightly fee. 5 Farrell Court The Laurels, Wilmington, Kent DA2 7DY Farrell Court (also known as The Laurels) consists of 50 flats in total, some within the enclosed section and some outside. Farrell Court has a 24 hour lifeline alarm system for when the HSO is off duty. This scheme is set in a semi-rural area of Dartford and is surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds. There is a spacious car park within the scheme grounds and the enclosed part of the scheme benefits from a secure door entry system and a lift to the upper floor. Tenants’ communal facilities include a large lounge with separate kitchen area for social meetings and activities and a fully equipped laundry (for which there is a weekly service charge). Applicants should be aged 55 years or older. Eligibility for this scheme is subject to a full needs & risk assessment. LOCAL AMENITIES: The nearest bus stop for buses to Dartford is on High • Road, Wilmington. This bus stop is a short distance from the rear exit of Farrell Court. The nearest NHS dentist is located in Dartford in Lowfield Street (approximately one mile away). The nearest • doctors surgery is either in Horsemans Place or the Lowfield Medical Centre, also in Lowfield Street, Dartford. The local supermarket is Costcutters, which is about 500 • yards from Farrell Court.

This recording exercise forms a detailed survey of the extant tramway tunnels at Historic England Level 3 (English Heritage 2006a). The wider site was subject to a Level 1 record, for contextual purposes. A desk-based assessment has previously been produced for the site by Archaeology South-East (ASE 2005). The site was established as a quarry in the early 20th century, forming part of the Swanscombe Works. The Swanscombe Works was one of the largest cement producers throughout the 20th century, and at its closure in 1990 was the oldest cement producer in the world.

This area is clearly defined in our constitution as the current Borough Wards of Castle, Greenhithe and Swanscombe. The twin areas of Swanscombe and Greenhithe have historically been a single community with a strong sense of its own identity; acknowledging and celebrating a greater common heritage Our principle purpose, as an independent Residents’ Association, is to support the wellbeing, environment, and amenities available to all residents of Swanscombe and Greenhithe. This principle ensures effective representation for all local residents; which is demonstrated by the SGRA currently holding twenty-one of the elected Councillor positions within Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town. These Councillors serve on the Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town Council (SGTC); Dartford Borough Council (DBC) and Kent County Council (KCC). The SGRA welcomes this opportunity to participate in shaping the future democratic landscape in Dartford. The SGRA recognises the work already undertaken in determining Council size in Dartford and believes the decision to recommend forty-two councillors will be effective. Based on the current total Borough electorate of 88,995 and the proposal for 42 members, this will mean that each DBC Councillor should have a target electorate of about 2,119. We believe this will provide an appropriate balance between strong, effective local governance as well as having the capacity of democratically elected representatives to maintain a meaningful connection with the residents that have elected them.

(Philipott 1659:288) A later report, mostly but not entirely derived from Philipott, says this: "Much land in this and other counties is held of this castle, whose tenure is perfect castle guard; for on St. Andrew's day, old stile, <30 Nov OS = 11 Dec NS> a banner is hung out at the house of the receiver of the rents; and every tenant who does not then discharge his proper rent, is liable to have it doubled on the return of every tide in the adjacent river, during the time it remains unpaid." (Shrubsole 1772:40) By Hasted's account (which I have not checked), the derelict castle at Rochester was granted by James I to Sir Anthony Weldon in 1612-13.
