Oom Boy en Engels was nie eintlik vriende nie, soms tot groot vermaak van sy spanmaats. Op ’n rugbytoer oorsee stap hy eendag by ’n winkel in om ’n koekie seep te koop. “Plies give me soap” sê Boy vir die verkoopsdame. “Certainly, sir” antwoord sy. “Would you like it scented?” “No, no” sê Boy, “I’ll sommer take it with me”. NEWS In what has been described as one of the most vocal and visible school activist campaigns, St John’s College led a #BringBackOurGirls protest on a chilly winter’s morning in May by forming a human chain around the perimeter of the school. Over 700 St John’s College students held up banners in silence for the 230 Nigerian school girls who were kidnaped by the Boko Haram. Other schools that participated included St Stithians, St Andrew’s, Redhill, St Teresa’s, Roedean, Kingsmead, St David’s, Parktown Boys and St Mary’s. Support from the motorists driving past was overwhelming with people hooting, waving and flashing lights in recognition of a cause which is very close to our pupils’ hearts. Their work will underpin a sustainable stability plan for the geologically fragile World Heritage Site. t’s listed by the Smithsonian Magazine as one Iof the 28 places to see before you die. Located halfway between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of AqabaRa in Jordan, its lofty tombs and monuments carved into the oxidised sand- stone mountains, the prehistoric city of Petra is an architectural and cultural oasis at the foot of the gorge- and tunnel-riddled Mount Hor, or Jabal Haroon, the burial place of Prophet Aaron. Once a thriving centre of trade, Petra was the capital city of the Nabateans, a nomadic people whose empire rose to its peak between 400 BC and AD 100. But the city was lost to the Western World for seventeen centuries until in 1812, Swiss traveller Ludwig Burckhardt gained entry, disguised as a Bedouin. In 1985 UNESCO declared Petra a World Heritage Site. Now it attracts up to 5,000 tour- ists a day in high season.

This year the Warwick Wealth/Bowls South Africa Women’s Naonal Bowls Championships and its simultaneously run Men’s event, 1 400km away, went without more than a few hiccups. Only major difference was it rained on the boys BGN AND WP in Johannesburg, whereas the sun scorched the girls in Cape Town. MAKE MERRY AT NATIONALS Strange, in fact, since at this me of the year it should have been the other way about. The Western Cape is in the grip of a major drought; not more than four week’s potable water remains in the dams; all incantaons, spells, rain dances and genuine prayers desperately required ASAP. I covered the women’s tournament in Cape Town, so that event will be given major coverage. Most notable fact about both tournaments was another drop in aendance from last year; to be truthful entries were almost in the woeful bracket. I remember playing in the men’s naonals in Pretoria in the late 1980s when 52 secons of 11 teams - more than 2 500 players – competed the fours alone over two weeks. From May 13- 21 this me only 22 secons of six teams – lile more than 500 players spent one week to determine their champions. The women’s event was blighted even more with just 10 secons of six sides - reduced further by late withdrawals - unbelievable.
