Volume 44, No. 22 SATURDAY, 6th JUNE 2009 Price $2.75 incl GST Continued Australian Government support for renewable energy on Norfolk Norfolk Island residents had been able to apply for financial assistance to offset the cost of installing renewable energy power systems under the Australian Government’s Renewable Remote Power Generation Program. This Program’s aim was to provide financial support to increase the use of renewable generation in remote parts of Australia. Earlier this month, federal authorities managing that Program advised that it could no longer assist as all the funding allocated to Norfolk Island – some $4,000,000 in total – had now been fully committed in rebates to Norfolk Island residents. However, the Office of the Administrator confirmed today that it had been advised that the Australian Government will continue to support small scale renewable energy installations on Norfolk Island through the national Renewable Energy Target scheme. The new arrangements – known as Solar Credits - are not intended to replace support under the Renewable Remote Power Generation Program. However, the Three Birthday Cakes and a Solar Credits will be available to support the installation of small-scale solar, wind or hydro electricity systems. Garden for Hazel’s 100th! PROPERTY MATTERS This week’s topic: ‘Current state of the market’ Knowing what the property market is doing is generally of interest to people irrespective whether they are intending to sell or buy, or to hang on to family property and pass it down through the generations. Real estate is a valuable asset and forms a major part of most people’s wealth. More so now that stock markets have been savaged over the past year. Currently there is a lot of property on the market here with more properties being listed. The heady days are gone when top prices are paid for property. Property markets around the world have been in decline and due to the slowdown, vendors are having to be more realistic with asking prices. Buyers are being very discerning as there is so much to choose from, and they are of the opinion that it is a “buyer’s market”. Good properties, realistically priced are selling and recent sales have indicated that the cheaper end of the market is moving, but sales above $500,000 are harder to achieve. Sales in the business, commercial and tourist accommodation areas are slow. There is always a healthy number of enquiries for real estate with good enquiry for vacant land mainly small acreages and building portions. Sale data shows that 58 property transactions were completed in 2007, 81 in 2008, and only 15 so far this year no doubt due to the fear and uncertainty surrounding the “global economic crisis”. However, the market will improve and there are positive signs of a recovery. Lending rates are low and vendors are meeting the market. ———————————————————— This is the first article in a series offered by Dave Weekley, an experienced and licensed Agent with an extensive background in banking and real estate fields, and who is retained by Norfolk Island Real Estate as a Sales Consultant/Auctioneer. As a contributing author to The Norfolk Islander, he will submit regular commentary on property related issues for general community information and interest, for the benefit of anyone considering either selling, buying, improving their property, or just wanting to be further informed about real estate and the market generally. Did you know that changing our attitude can positively effect our perceptions, emotions, and thought processes. A saying I well remember is: “whatever gets your attention, gets you” (source unknown) but it has stuck with me for many years. If I allow myself to dwell on a negative thought, a fear, a hurt or disappointment, that thought will actually cause a negative feeling. Negative feelings produce negative actions. I often call that kind of thinking, ‘stinking thinking’. And when I realise I have been indulging in that, then it becomes time to have a ‘check up from the neck up’

Most of us hate visiting the dentist. So how do we prepare for it? We put it off – over and over – until the pain becomes so bad, that we to go…the end result is, that it hurts much more and for longer because of the time we spent beforehand (our attitude) anticipating and dreading the visit. So if you have a toothache? Go and get it fixed now.. Instead of being afraid to go your attitude needs to be … ‘my tooth hurts. I must go to the expert and get it fixed right away.’ It’s all about changing your attitude.

I found these tips on attitude on the web:… http://www.theattitudedoc.com

“1)Be aware. Be open. Be willing to strrrrrrrrretch. 2) Explore your belief system. Ask, “How did I get to be who I am?” The first place to look is with your primary role models—your parents. 3) Evaluate which model works for you and which ones sabotage your happiness. Delete the ones that no longer serve you. 4) Create new habits (attitudes) that support your dreams and passions. 5) Consciously choose to shift from fear and doubt to love and trust. 6) Observe your life. Notice without judgment. 7) Take total responsibility for your life and be aware if you respond to people and circumstances, or react to them. The only place of power is in responsibility. Giving up being a victim is a priority! 8) Experiment in taking one full waking day to appreciate everything that happens to you, and I mean everything. 9)Stop resisting. 10) Express to others how they make a difference in your life. Be grateful for it all.”

It’s a bit like an old Maori proverb I heard once. “Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.”

CALLING AN AMBULANCE

When confronted by a sudden accident or illness and you want help. The quickest way to get help: • Ring for the Ambulance, 22091 or 911 • Give the exact location, landmarks etc. • Speak slowly and clearly. • Give your name and the phone number you are ringing from. • Give the number of casualities [if a multi person accident] • Give the name of the patient if known [this is important on Norfolk as the hospital will have records of that person] • State if any other emergency service is required eg. Police, Cliff rescue etc. Telephone • Do NOT hang up till the hospital hangs up, they may have other questions 22091 or 911 they would like to ask. Thank You Norfolk Islanders My wife and I have had the wonderful privilege of being on Norfolk Island for the past four months while I have been the minister of the Uniting Church. During our 16 weeks I have met many great people through tennis, golf and bowls as well as in the various churches on the island, and my wife has met other creative people through craft, garden club and working at the Uniting Church Opportunity Shop. We have thoroughly enjoyed the people, places and the history of this beautiful island. People are welcoming, friendly and helpful to visitors such as us. The various combined church activities are enriching and go well for the Christianity on the island. Thank you to the helpful staff at Radio Norfolk and at the Norfolk Islander for their professional assistance. I have expressed some of my wonder and appreciation in the following poem.

HOLIDAY ON NORFOLK ISLAND Your touch down is smooth, flying Norfolk Air, Facing the window, you smile as you stare. Welcoming parties ask “you’re staying where?” Your holiday time is without a care. Each day starts out clear, unless fog moves in. Sun shines through clouds, where raining had been. Deep waters changing from sky-blue to green. The coast line and cliffs, the best you have seen. Tag-a-long tours to old convict grounds, Or jump on a bus as it does its rounds. Eat like you don’t care about extra pounds. Relax and enjoy, there’s more ups than downs. The mobile mowers keep grass short and green. Their brown calling cards show where they have been. Their fully grown calves refuse to wean. Cattle rule Norfolk as their King and Queen. The “Convict Night” makes you quite a site, Ghost stories abound throughout “Sound and Light” Through “Glass Bottom Boats” the fish world looks bright. Witty poems enhance “Wonderland by Night.” Trek through the forest or fish from a boat. Captain Cook’s lookout brings gasps from your throat. In Emily Bay you swim or just float. While high Puppy’s Point makes the world seem remote. RW

Your colourful jet speeds into the skies, You lean back and smile while closing your eyes. From tax tree shopping to tasty fish fries. Holiday on Norfolk will always surprise. RW What’s on at the
