New Atheists seem to argue that scientific theories are based only on evidence, whilst religion runs away from evidence. The claim is that atheism is rational and scientific while religion is irrational and superstitious. Faith is not an element of science since evidence for a correct conviction compels us to accept its truth. As Dawkins says “Faith is a state of mind that leads people to believe something – it doesn’t matter what – in the total absence of supporting evidence. If there were good supporting evidence, then faith would be superfluous…” However, Alister McGrath points out that such a view “fails to make the critical distinction between the ‘total absence of supporting evidence’ and the ‘absence of totally supporting evidence’.” It is true that some facts about the world have been proved (e.g. the chemical formula for water) but the bigger scientific questions such as is there a Grand Unified Theory that explains everything rely on answers based on the best evidence available but they are not certainties. In future years they may well change as new evidence is considered. As Gauch concluded “Science rests on faith”. Dawkins in his book “The God Delusion” does argue that the existence of God is a testable hypothesis and concludes that the hypothesis is falsifiable. Therefore the hypothesis is open to the scientific method. So here is a New Atheist proponent arguing that that the existence of God is a meaningful hypothesis. -

HINDUISM IN EUROPE Stockholm 26-28 April, 2017 Abstracts 1. Vishwa Adluri, Hunter College, USA Sanskrit Studies in Germany, 1800–2015 German scholars came late to Sanskrit, but within a quarter century created an impressive array of faculties. European colleagues acknowledged Germany as the center of Sanskrit studies on the continent. This chapter examines the reasons for this buildup: Prussian university reform, German philological advances, imagined affinities with ancient Indian and, especially, Aryan culture, and a new humanistic model focused on method, objectivity, and criticism. The chapter’s first section discusses the emergence of German Sanskrit studies. It also discusses the pantheism controversy between F. W. Schlegel and G. W. F. Hegel, which crucially influenced the German reception of Indian philosophy. The second section traces the German reception of the Bhagavad Gītā as a paradigmatic example of German interpretive concerns and reconstructive methods. The third section examines historic conflicts and potential misunderstandings as German scholars engaged with the knowledge traditions of Brahmanic Hinduism. A final section examines wider resonances as European scholars assimilated German methods and modeled their institutions and traditions on the German paradigm. The conclusion addresses shifts in the field as a result of postcolonial criticisms, epistemic transformations, critical histories, and declining resources. 2. Firstly, the paper discusses the history and place of contemporary Hinduism within the religious map of Lithuania. -

Breaking away from gang membership and into productive adulthood Juan Pablo "JP" Herrada was born in Mexico and migrated to the United States with his family at 6 years old, although he continued to live half-time in his birth town. He joined a Goleta neighborhood gang at 12 years old, and later dropped out of school to work and support his family, while trying for a G.E.D. By age 18, JP had started his own family, but continued in and out of gang life, eventually generating a criminal record which impacted his ability to raise his children. This motivated him to turn his life around, so he and his brother JC formed a nonprofit called Palabra, referring to "one's word as a man, one's honor". Now all local High Schools and some Junior Highs have a Palabra program. The Herrada brothers meet with different at-risk groups in Santa Barbara and Goleta twice a week, both at schools and outside them. The program's curriculum has group discussions every week, from gang violence and drugs, to law enforcement and knowing one's rights. -

France is selected as a case study for this paper as it is in this country where the debate on religion in general and Islam in particular seem to be more contentious in relation to the questions of integration of Muslim communities to secular (French republican) values. Recent sources of tensions include the ban of the Burqa in the public space; the debate on national identity instigated by the former French president Nicholas Sarkozy, which became centred around the question of Islam and Muslims in France; the provocative cartoons about Prophet Mohamed in the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo; opposition against the provision of halal meal in France’s fast-food chain Quick; and resistance toward Qatar’s plan to invest in deprived suburbs of France, to name just a few. The other context which this paper examines in relation to the question of sport, Islam, and identity-making of Muslims in Europe is the phenomenon of “reverse migration” or the re-connection of athletes of Muslim background in Europe, or so-called Muslim neo-Europeans, with their (parents’) country of origin. -

Rich countries are much likelier to be democracies than poor countries. Why this is true is debated fiercely. Simply reaching a given level of economic development could not itself produce democracy; it can do so only by bringing changes in how people act. Accordingly, Seymour Martin Lipset (1959) argued that development leads to democracy because it produces certain socio-cultural changes that shape human actions. The empirical data that would be needed to test this claim did not exist then, so his suggestion remained a passing comment.1 Today, large-N comparative surveys make the relevant data available for most of the world’s population, and there have been major advances in analytic techniques. But social scientists rarely put the two together, partly because of a persisting tendency to view mass attitudinal data as volatile and unreliable. In this piece we wish to redress this situation. We argue that certain modernization-linked mass attitudes are stable attributes of given societies that are being measured reliably by the large-N comparative survey projects, even in low-income countries, and that these attitudes seem to play important roles in social changes such as democratization. Our purpose here is not to demonstrate the impact of changing values on democracy so much as to make a point about the epistemology of survey data with important ramifications for the way we analyze democracy. Unlike dozens of articles we’ve published that nail down one hypothesis about one dependent variable, this piece analyzes data from almost 400 surveys to demonstrate that modernization-linked attitudes are stable attributes of given societies and are strongly linked with many important societal-level variables, ranging from civil society to democracy to gender equality. -

SURI 7 (2) 2019: 1-22 Emergentism as an Option in the Philosophy of Religion: Between Materialist Atheism and Pantheism James Franklin University of New South Wales Abstract: Among worldviews, in addition to the options of materialist atheism, pantheism and personal theism, there exists a fourth, “local emergentism”. It holds that there are no gods, nor does the universe overall have divine aspects or any purpose. But locally, in our region of space and time, the properties of matter have given rise to entities which are completely different from matter in kind and to a degree god-like: consciousnesses with rational powers and intrinsic worth. The emergentist option is compared with the standard alternatives and the arguments for and against it are laid out. It is argued that, among options in the philosophy of religion, it involves the minimal reworking of the manifest image of common sense. Hence it deserves a place at the table in arguments as to the overall nature of the universe. Keywords: Emergence; pantheism; personal theism; naturalism; consciousness 1. INTRODUCTION The main options among world views are normally classifiable as either materialist atheism, pantheism (widely understood) or personal theism. According to materialist atheism, there exists nothing except the material universe as we ordinarily conceive it, and its properties are fully described by science (present or future). Course Description, Objectives and Requirements: “Developing Countries in World Politics” is a course that blends history and theory to help students (as future policymakers, scholars or informed citizens) better understand the politics of the developing world and the role of the United States in these politics. In other words, students will become familiar with the impact of U.S. involvement in the developing world, and the role this involvement played in constituting the American ascendency. We will engage in a historically grounded survey of the politics of developing countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East, developing an understanding of the particular issues faced in these countries such as underdevelopment, poverty, debt, religious and ethnic conflict, and climate change. In addition, we will pay close attention to the successes and failures of attempts on the part of Third World to organize outside of the Cold War system dominated by the most powerful states. Roman Chytilek Pippa Norris and Ronald Inglehart: Cultural Backlash: Trump, Brexit, and Authoritarian Populism Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 2019. 540 pp. ISBN 978-1108444422 The eminent American social scientist Ronald Inglehart and the important American political scientist Pippa Norris, who specialises in conjunctural issues and broadly conceived comparative studies, have joined forces in Cultural Backlash to explain the current rise of “authoritarian populists” in many parts of the world. What do Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen, Viktor Orbán, Rodrigo Duterte and Jair Bolsonaro have in common? (The last, who only scored his major victory this year, when the book manuscript was already in press, is given less attention.) At the core of their political message is populism, defined by the authors in conformity with the emerging theoretical consensus as a style of politics built on criticism of a rotten establishment and, contrasted with it, emphasis on the primacy, purity and sovereignty of the people, seeing both (the people and the elite) as homogeneous. Combined with authoritarianism – a political discourse that emphasises the necessity of defending oneself against various external threats, and hence stressing security, group cohesion and conformity, as well as the role of a strong leader as the representative of the interests of the masses – populism is particularly dangerous to the survival of democracy. While populism questions the fundamental institutions of democracy (for example, the principle of representation), authoritarianism fights democratic values, such as respect for the rights of minorities, working to achieve consensus, or at least a compromise, the separation of the private from the political, and respect for the rules of the political game. -

Ezekiel Goggin Office: Ladd 210 Email: [email protected] Class Meetings: W/F 8:40-10:00 (Tisch 301) Office hours: WF 10:15-11:45am Course Description A historical and systematic investigation of the religious sources of ancient, modern, and contemporary atheisms. “New Atheists” such as Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and the late Christopher Hitchens are often invoked in contemporary discourse as intellectually authoritative voices for atheism. For these “New Atheists,” the difference between religion and unbelief is straightforward: rationality is superior to superstition, freedom should be valued over submission, critical inquiry should replace blind faith. However, the historical relationship of atheism to religion and religious belief is considerably more complex than such neat, binary oppositions allow. Far from being a contemporary phenomenon, atheism has religious roots as deep and ancient as the theism which it purports to reject. While “New Atheism” tends to be dismissive of religion and religious beliefs, many ancient and modern atheisms emerged from a willingness to take religion seriously on its own terms. Through comparative analysis of the appearance of atheism and antireligious thought within, between, and adjacent to several religious traditions (e.g., Ancient Greek religion Christian Mysticism, Hinduism, and Judaism), this course will contextualize and evaluate a range of atheistic positions. By the end of the course, we will see, it is perhaps better to speak about “atheisms” than “atheism.” Objectives In pursuit of these themes, students will achieve five major objectives: 1.) Think critically about atheisms within the hermeneutic frameworks of religious studies 2.) Gain familiarity with key theoretical and historical questions and figures in the history of atheism 3.) Develop an appreciation of the complex historical relationship between religions and the atheisms to which they give rise.
