NOTE: You will need smaller drybrushes (at least two), #12 flats or angles for shading, 3/8” and ½” mop brushes, round brush or small stipple brush for stippling, a good liner brush, post-it notes, hand cleaner and gold string or wire for hanging.

Prep

Sand and seal wood piece. Basecoat front (when closed) and center (when open) Milk Chocolate. Center square on front is Payne’s Gray with Splendid Gold Metallic band around square and gold lined words. Inside: Transfer lines dividing sky and ground. Basecoat ground Mississippi Mud. For Sky: basecoat from ground with Williamsburg Blue and from top Payne’s Gray, blending in the center while wet. Transfer main pattern lines (leaving off candle/holder/halo/) and basecoat the following:

Lamp Black – The Three Kings and the buildings/trees. Splendid Gold Metallic – Gifts (detail lines – Lamp Black). Mocha – All faces/necks/hands/Shephard’s legs. Dark Chocolate – Hair on Mary, Joseph and Shephard. Light Buttermilk – Baby’s blanket. Milk Chocolate – Manger. Williamsburg Blue – Mary’s dress. Khaki Tan – Joseph’s robe (inside), Shephard’s robe (detail lines Heritage Brick) and two blankets (detail lines – wide: Heritage Brick, thin: Lamp Black). Heritage Brick – Joseph’s coat/headband (detail lines – Lamp Black) and Shephard’s hat. Zinc – Sheep (faces/legs – Lamp Black).

Transfer remaining pattern lines. STOP HERE and wait for class ☺

NOTE: When more than one color is called for, the first is everywhere and the other is only in deeper/brighter places.

Drybrush or float Highlights:

• Light Buttermilk: Center of faces/end of hands/Shephard’s legs/Mary’s dress; chest/sleeves/left of Manger/Her Mantle; up center at bottom and across top above her head. • Antique White: Top of ground next to sky/under gifts/Mary/Manger/Sheep/ Shephard, center of Joseph’s robe, center of two blankets, Shephard’s robe; chest/sleeves/bottom center. • Neons Fiery Red: Joseph’s coat; center edges/center of sleeve/center of headband, center of Shephard’s hat. • Honey brown: Stable; across top/center of braces on top/top board/side boards next to center/center of boards each side of Mary and Joseph. On Manger; left edge/bottom right corner.

JOSEPH – Shade Burnt Sienna, then Soft Black; across top of head, under chin on neck and on hand next to sleeve. CHEEKS are soft Heritage Brick. EYES are Lamp Black with Light Buttermilk highlight upper right, BROWS are Dark Chocolate, NOSE line is Burnt Sienna and MOUTH is Heritage Brick. Shade Soft Black on HAIR above/below headband. Highlight lines are Honey Brown. Shade Dark Chocolate then Soft Black on ROBE; next to coat on each side and center front. Stitches are Soft Black. Shade Soft Black on COAT/HEADBAND; each side of headband, on left sleeve next to chest/next to Mary/on chest in front of right sleeve/above Baby blanket and softly down back of right sleeve.

MARY – Shading/detail on face/hand same as Joseph. Add soft Williamsburg Blue to eyelids. Shade HAIR next to Mantle/next to face/neck and add highlight lines of Honey Brown. Shade Payne’s Gray on Mary’s DRESS; in front of/back of front sleeve/on back sleeve next to chest/above Baby/next to Manger/next to and under Mantle and across bottom. Stitches/string tie are Light Buttermilk. MANTLE is shaded Dark Chocolate; softly down back/in front of fold at bottom/inside area on right under hair and above Baby. Strengthen here with Soft Black. Add a line of Snow White on front edge of Mantle.

BABY/BLANKETS/MANGER/STRAW – Dab in little curls on His head Milk Chocolate. Line EYE Black, CHEEK soft Heritage Brick. Shade Soft Black across white BLANKET above manger/Joseph’s hand. Highlight top of blanket Snow White. Float HALO Splendid Gold Metallic. Shade Dark Chocolate across top of large BLANKET. Shade Soft Black on MANGER; under blanket and on legs under main part. Lines between boards Soft Black. STRAW is lines of Honey Brown, Marigold and Primary Yellow.

GIFTS – Shade Burnt Sienna then Soft Black; down left side of jug/both sides of top container/both sides of box (first color only in these places…the rest gets strengthened with Soft Black) under rim of jug/bottom of knob/under rims/across bottom of top container/under lid and latch of box/across bottom. Add strong Light Buttermilk dashes to highlight. Add STRAW same as before.

SHEPHARD – FACE/NECK/HAND/LEGS same as before. Shade Soft Black on ROBE; on back sleeve in front of chest/on chest in front of right sleeve/above sheep/under arm. String tie at waist Soft Black. SHOES/LACES are Lamp Black. Shade HAT Soft Black; above brim and softly each side.

SHEEP – Dab with a small brush or stipple Light Buttermilk all over. Stipple Snow White to highlight; front of heads and center or front of body. Shade Graphite; back of heads/across bottom to tail on center sheep/around blanket on standing sheep/along bottom next to arm on sheep in Shephard’s arms. Add Black EARS and highlight Light Buttermilk to noses/ears/legs.

STABLE/CANDLE/HOLDER – Shade Soft Black; at connecting places on roof pieces/under cross board at top/inside side boards/above/below braces at corners and behind Holy Family. Lines in-between boards and cracks are Soft Black. Stable on front (closed doors) done the same. CANDLE is Antique White. Shade at bottom Soft Black and highlight center Light Buttermilk. FLAME is Marigold and GLOW is Primary Yellow. HOLDER is Zinc. Shade bottom Graphite and highlight top Light Buttermilk. String is Light Buttermilk. Add STRAW across bottom same as before.

FINISHING - Splendid Gold Metallic; STAR/drybrush GLOW, add tiny stars, tiny dashes to front of Kings/Camels and add windows in buildings. Add background shading of Soft Black; behind gifts/sheep/Shephard. Line where needed Lamp Black, antique, varnish and add the gold cord or wire. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
