Honolulu Marathon Sunday, December 13 Volume X, No. 50 Waikīkī Improvement Association December 10-16, 2009 Waikīkī Wiki Wiki Wire 2009 Honolulu Marathon Sunday, December 13 Race Day START LOCATION: Ala Moana Boulevard/Queen Street Extension FINISH LOCATION: Kapi‘olani Park START: 5 AM on Sunday, December 13, 2009. To ensure an orderly start, please proceed onto Ala Moana Boulevard beneath the banners indicating your estimated finish time. Water is available at the Start. TRANSPORTATION: Free BUS SERVICE to the starting line will depart from the Honolulu Zoo parking lot on Kapahulu Avenue beginning at 2 AM on Race Day. The last bus will leave at 4 AM. Board early and do not wait for the last bus as there may not be room. Non-runners will be transported on a space-available basis. A few buses will return to Kapi‘olani Park after the start. Watch live streaming video on www.honoluluadvertiser.com PARKING: Vehicle access to Ala Moana Beach Park and Kapi‘olani Park will be strictly enforced. Only vehicles that have authorized access by the Honolulu Marathon and display the proper vehicle permit will be allowed access. No parking will be allowed in or near Kapi‘olani Park or the parking lot after 7 PM on Saturday, December 12. Unauthorized vehicles parked in those areas will be ticketed and towed. Parking at the starting line is prohibited. Check the Traffic Advisory for more information. RESTROOMS: Portable facilities will be in abundance. IMPORTANT NOTE: There will be no Clothing Check-In at the START Area on Race Day. Any clothing left or discarded at the start area will be donated to charity. Page 2, December 10-16, 2009 Page 2 Waikīkī Wiki Wiki Wire Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa presents Christmas Specials Kama‘aina room specials available through Christmas for staycations With kama‘aina room specials, holiday menus at the signature Village restaurants, a showstopper of a luau near the lagoon, and the return of Friday night fireworks on December 25, Hilton Hawaiian VillageÒ Beach Resort & Spa makes the perfect Christmas staycation for island residents. The resort’s culinary landmark Bali Steak & Seafood, will offer an exquisite four-course dinner on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The evening begins with an amuse bouche of poha berry chutney and Puna goat cheese tart followed by a Hamakua tomato cream soup and then a salad of Hirabara farms greens and hearts of palm. Diners can choose their entrée from among the following: thyme seared Pacific snapper fillet, or fresh horseradish crusted prime beef fillet and shrimp oscar, or Kona sea salt roasted prime rib of beef. The dessert is a mocha raspberry cake with chocolate and mocha sauce. The cost of the dinner is $90 for adults and $48 for children under the age of 12. Also on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Rainbow Lanai is putting out a buffet spread not to be missed. For starters, there’ll be a variety of salads including Waimanalo Farms’ island greens, hearts of palm, tomato salad and an assortment of sushi rice. In addition to domestic and imported cheeses, cold selections include sashimi, chilled oysters, poke salad and poke. Among the hot selections are wild rice pilaf, baked snow crab macaroni and cheese, pepper roasted mahi fillet, brown sugar pork loin, and steamed snow crab legs. At the carving station, there’ll be roast tom turkey and rib eye cowboy chops. The dessert spread provides a perfect sweet ending to the meal with egg nog custard pie tarts, fruit cobblers, assorted crème brule, haupia custard, chocolate fondue with mini malasadas, assorted mini sugar cookies, and fruits. The cost of the Rainbow Lanai Christmas buffet is $59 for adults and $32 for children. To make dining reservations, call the resort at (808) 949-321, and ask for dining reservations. On December 24 and 25, the Waikiki Starlight Luau will be held on the Lagoon Green near the picturesque Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon. A sumptuous dinner buffet is offered featuring a modern twist on traditional luau fare. The culinary team of Hilton Hawaiian Village has taken the islands’ freshest ingredients and crafted them into such selections as steamed banana leaf-wrapped island fish; Thai lemongrass marinated huli huli chicken; rotisserie sirloin of beef with a rosemary and guava barbecue sauce; Hawaiian paella with Portuguese sausage, island fish and shellfish; Waimanalo Farms island greens; Pacific rice noodle salad; Molokai herb-roasted sweet potatoes, just to name a few. Traditional luau favorites include kalua pig; lomi lomi salmon; poi; ahi tuna poke and sweet taro rolls. The desserts include coconut haupia custard cake; pineapple upside down cake; passion fruit and mango tart and guava chiffon cake. The Waikiki Starlight Luau features the beautiful ladies and gentlemen of Tihati Productions in an exhilarating show. Page 3, December 10-16, 2009 Page 3 Waikīkī Wiki Wiki Wire Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa hosts holiday party for Jefferson’s Orthopedic Unit The annual holiday luncheon is for students at Jefferson Elementary On Tuesday, December 8 Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa partnered with the Honolulu Police Department and Jefferson Elementary to share holiday cheer with students in the school’s Orthopedic Unit. The annual event - now in its thirteenth year - included gift exchanges, a visit from Santa, and a luncheon at Hyatt Regency Waikiki, located at 2424 Kalakaua Avenue. Each year officers from the Honolulu Police Department decorate the hotel ballroom with gifts that have been donated by the community. Afterwards, the officers go to Jefferson Elementary and walk with students and teachers from the school to the hotel. This year, fourteen Junior Cadets accompanied the group. “It’s really exciting for everyone - the kids make a parade of it. Each year, many come in decorated wheelchairs wearing Santa hats,” says Jessy Ah Loo, human resources manager at Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa.
