The Marathon Show (hosted by Maniac #1817, Joe Taricani) was first broadcast in June 2010. It’s a one of a kind show that spot lights the marathon and marathon runners. Maniacs have found a safe haven with this great show. A few times a week Joe broadcast the show live online, the shows are then made available to download from iTunes (via Podcast). Each week Joe features a marathoner, and often does shout outs to marathoners from all over. Another great part of this show is the “runners chat”, in these shows Joe gets three marathoners together and does a round table discussion about many great topics. So if you have already come across the show, please do. Check it out and tune in! http://www.themarathonshow.com

Also the most popular star level is bronze (one star) with 1,709 Maniacs (50.82%) followed by Iridium (four stars) with 506 Maniacs (15.05%) and Silver (two stars) with 350 Maniacs (10.41%). Each month there will be a “Maniac poll”. This poll will be posted online. Please take a few moments to answer this poll. I will post the results in the next newsletter. This month’s question: What is your favorite sports drink? Please vote online between now and February 5: http://www.marathonfreak.com/maniacpoll
Last month’s question: What type of timing device do you use? It looks like most Maniacs use Garmin as the timing device of choice. Of the 98 votes ,74.5% of the votes were for the Garmin devices. Otherwise it looks like 12.2% just use a plain old watch and 8.2% don’t use a timing device. Thanks to all that voted.

Rudy Asian Maniacs!! Acevedo
From the Editor…
Wow this has been quite a year for the Marathon Maniacs! When I joined the club in August of 2006, I knew a lot of the Maniacs because the club was very small (about 350 members). Now the club is huge and while that means it’s hard to keep track of who everyone is, it also means you see Maniacs everywhere. This year we have records set and records broken, then records set again. It’s amazing how the Roger Chou and Steve Walters Maniacs have pushed the envelope on running marathons. A big congratulations goes to Larry Macon and Yolanda Holder for running 106 in 2010. As I look to 2011, I’m excited to see what comes ahead for this club. By the Way, if anyone would like to run a triple in 2011 with little to no travel between races please checkout the “Firecracker Triple” (http://www.firecrackertriple.com) it’s a triple that I’m hosting in the Portland (OR) area over the 4th of July weekend. - Steve “Marathon Freak” Walters MM#338 19 December 2010 Newsletter
Rhetorical Revelations and W(Rites)… from the Rambunctious Rev
Happy (creak) New Y(owhh)ear, there, Stevie Boy!
Getting a little long in the tooth yet, my friend? Nah, not you, Stevie! You are the ever youthful Boy Wonder, now playing sidekick to Hollywood Warren’s Batman-like performances of 2010! Mighty proud of that fellow, you know? He gets it done, no bragging, AND still lets us hang around him, my my my.
With Tony Trythlete, the three of you lead a club closing in on a decade old, and Lord knows how many miles you have logged, and how many extra marathons you have inspired in folks. Great successes, Lads, wonderful stuff.
But in this first cold month of the new year, is getting cranked up again still as easy as it was a decade ago? Honestly, now, Mr. Positive Prez, after two lovely holiday weekends, was there maybe a twinge or a grimace contemplating tackling another new training year? Was it just a tiny bit tough getting back to work, knowing another long winter grind loomed, waiting and waiting for the yellow ball in the sky to appear again?
So the mind seeks a fun thought, and drifts to marathons (yesss!...just made up a list of 15 for 2011 for sure, and another 20 or 25 to consider!!!), but the gray in the sky lingers yet, and after that not-so-swift run last evening, these marathons, upon further review, are actually … well they are kind of long beasts. And while that one sign at that one marathon was funny … it appeared again at the very next marathon two hundred miles away, and the spectators shouted the same things, (and let’s not get started on Gatorade redux)…and so, just what is going to be so new about this Happy New Year?
Well, your buddy Rev is going to try to train harder, lose some weight, and qualify for Boston!… oops, nope, nothing new there… though I guess success at two- out-of-three would be new. (Shoot, might even earn the guy a plaque in the Maniac Hall of Surprises and Shocks.)
I’ll tell you what’s going to be new, Buddy Boy, I’ll tell you what’s going to be new. It isn’t going to be something we manufacture. No, methinks that whole Looking Up idea I had back at Lehigh Valley in September was the ticket to this Happy New stuff. Seems to me, new and creativity are a lot alike, and Mother Nature gets the nod for creativity. I mean, look at your happy Brazilians, or even your Puywallupians.
Got a story for you Stevie, then I gotta go massage a calf muscle, or this will be a Long year…
When I was a teenager, a lovely lass enticed me to escort her through an assignment of her college art class: visit five New York City art galleries, and report on what you saw. Now it is hard in the States to do better than New York City for art talent, and we saw some pretty impressive exhibits: paintings; sculptures up to fifteen-feet high; a twenty-minute film about crafting a spiral jetty from an ocean’s beach. I remember some of those exhibits still, and went home that Friday duly impressed with human genius.
But early one wintry weekend morning soon after, I had a three-hour drive into the hills of Pennsylvania to make, and there had been an ice storm the prior night. By morning the expressways were clear, but the forests were a different story. They had been magically transformed into a spectacular winter scene. Steve, one tree’s trunk, it’s limbs, branches, each twig all the way to the top, were perfectly outlined in ice: clear, crystally, white, multi-colored hues of blues and silvers, glorious patterns of glitter, intertwined in a hundred thousand criss-crosses, implausibly complicated, incredibly fascinating, one tree. Except there was not just one tree. There were hundreds of them, thousands of them, maybe millions, covering the valleys, the hillsides, and the crests of these eastern mountains. And the tops of the highest trees were backlit by the prettiest deep-blue sky colors you have ever seen. Miles after inspiring, humbling miles, the visual impact just captivated and thrilled.
A little daft I am, wondering whether we could get Mom Nature’s work approved for a showing at one of those galleries.
Yessir, this can be a Happy New Year, Prez. Looking forward to these marathons again (even mile 23), we might get to see up close and personal the varieties of nature’s creativity around us, by laughing with some of your maniacal Canadians, meeting a couple of those Maine fellers (you know, the talented one, and the other one), and seeing, watching, the improbable details of the lands and skies we’ll skip through.
And you and me, Stevie? Even if (pla-a-a-ce your bets) Rev fails to qualify for Boston this year, and yee fail to catch up to Batman, we’ll see some new, wonderful things out there, just by looking up. Just by looking up.
Happy New Year, Prez, and to all our wonderful friends. Luvya, Rev [email protected]
