Meeting local characters is part of the Cannon Beach experience.

Seeing the Tufted Puffins that nest on Haystack Rock is a special experience, but the Cannon Beach area offers many exciting opportunities to observe wildlife and sealife. During the quieter seasons, herds of Roosevelt Elk emerge from the edges of the rainforest to graze in our city parks and green spaces. Colorful tidepools are filled with fascinating forms of marine life and intertidal rocks are encrusted with an active eco-system of mussels, snails and sea stars. Bald Eagles patrol the skies and Brown Pelicans skim the surf. Each spring and winter, nearly 20,000 Gray Whales can be observed making one of the natural world’s most amazing migrations. The puffins may steal the show, but a wide variety of seabirds can be seen. Look for crowded colonies of Common Murres on top of rocks, cormorants nesting on rocky ledges and Black Oystercatchers foraging along the rocky shore. Your next great encounter with nature is just a beach walk or a trail away.

Beth Wise MAGIC SEASON

If you only know Cannon Beach in summer, you don't know Cannon Beach.

There are really only two seasons in Cannon Beach: summer and the magic season. Can you guess which one we prefer? Between October and May, the pace of the coast changes dramatically and it’s a magical time to visit Cannon Beach and experience the Oregon Coast at its authentic best. As soon as the summer crowds disappear, herds of Roosevelt Elk return to the coastal lowlands and emerge from the misty rainforest to feed on the lush grassy areas around town. A Bald Eagle could make an appearance over your head at any moment. To us, summer waves are boring. We prefer the thunderous roar of the ocean whipped up by an offshore storm and watching waves explode against the rocky shoreline in a display better than any fireworks show. There's also something to be said for uncrowded beaches and natural areas that you can sometimes have practically to yourself. This time of year, it's easier to find a seat at our great restaurants and you'll find reduced rates on ocean view rooms. Fair weather visitors may avoid our showery and sometimes stormy fall, winter and spring, but that's their loss. This is the Oregon Coast we love.
