  • Jim Mcguire's Hall of Fame Photo by Phil Newman
Behind the Image: Jim McGuire's Hall of Fame Photo By Phil Newman One night in 1972, long after the Aereo-Plain band’s show in Greenwich Village had ended, in the wee hours approaching 2 a.m., John Hartford slipped on to a stool in front of a canvas backdrop in a Manhattan studio. His host, budding photographer Jim McGuire, made a simple request: Just play a little something on your banjo. Whatever you like. Don’t mind me. And so John played, and McGuire quietly shot photos—about two rolls of 35mm film—and one of those frames became an image that would capture not only the essence of a musician but also of a genre, and an era, in American music. Some 42 years later, McGuire’s photo remains emblematic; it was chosen for display upon John's induction into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2010. As for the photographer, he went on to shoot iconic images of numerous musical luminaries—from Bill Monroe and Dolly Parton to an aging Johnny Cash (with Billy Graham) and a fresh-faced Vince Gill—that became the Nashville Portrait series in 2007; it's available online and in a beautiful book. A Favor and A Fan McGuire still fondly remembers that special session with John and his band. “It was right before I moved from New York to Nashville, and I was just kind of a kid starting out,” McGuire says. “The Aereo-Plain band—John, Tut Taylor, Vassar Clements and Norman Blake—had a show in the Village that night.

  • The Krüger Brothers Biography
The Krüger Brothers Biography Originally from Switzerland, brothers Uwe and Jens Kruger began playing North American folk music at an early age and were particularly inspired by recordings of Doc Watson, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and other progenitors of country, bluegrass and folk music. Their first public performances were as a duo, busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and Western Europe. After gaining a recording contract as well as a radio show on SRG SSR, the Swiss public broadcaster, they teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, inaugurating a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. Landsberg is an American citizen from New York, NY. The first re- cording project to include Landsberg was Behind the Barn, Vol. 2, released in 1997. The Kruger Brothers moved to the United States in 2002, and are based in Wilkesboro, NC. The group is highly regarded within the world of acoustic music in North America, in particular by those within the industry. They have also gained the attention of some of the musicians, including Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Tut Taylor, and Bobby Hicks, that once served as models. Watson has said, “The Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as I’ve ever played with. ... I love to play music with them.” In 2013, Jens Kruger was named the fourth recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass Music. The prize, created and endowed by Martin, recognizes “outstanding accomplishments in the field of five-string banjo,” Jens was selected by a committee that included Martin, Pete Wernick, Bé la Fleck, Alison Brown, J.D.

The National-Dobro Guitar Company: How The Resonator Guitar Survived The Age of Electric Amplification By Peter T. Veru A Thesis Submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of The George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the Partial Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts August 31, 2009 Thesis Directed by Andrew Zimmerman Professor of History Abstract of Thesis National-Dobro Guitar Company: How the Resonator Guitar Survived the Age of Electric Amplification John Dopyera, who was attempting to increase the sonority of the acoustic guitar, invented the resonator guitar in the mid 1920s. Dopyera’s invention was responsible for the single largest leap in volume in guitars since the instrument first appeared some 2000 years ago. The resonator first appeared in Hawaiian music but later spilled into other genres such as blues and country. Professional musicians coveted the resonator guitar and its advent caused innovations in style and playing method that continued on into the age of electric instruments. The instruments that were supposed to replace the resonator in the evolutionary chain, the lap steel and the Spanish electric guitar, actually had the effect of insuring its ultimate survival. For ten years, the resonator guitar was in the hegemonic position among musical instruments when opportunities for musicians were disappearing by the thousands due to technological changes in the field of entertainment and the entire world was mired in an economic slowdown never seen before or since in the modern world. The resonator’s history intertwined with the Folk Revival, racial discrimination and intense drama among the partners of the National String Instrument Company.

Reviewed by Gary Stanton In the past fifteen years there has been a tremendous proliferation of recording companies. While many of these miniscule labels lack much of the national distribution of the giants, they allow their performers a correspondingly greater say in what gets on th~record. In general there is an inverse relationship between the prestige of the label and the variability of the records that label releases, There are at least two types of records, those for the general listener and those for other performers. The general public listens and likes; performers listen and then incorporate the material into their own repertories, when possible. Norman Blake is a performers1 musician. He is in the tradition of great southern guitar pickers, The origins of this tradition are obscured, but certainly in his conception of the guitar parts for fiddle tunes Blake pays homage to Doc Watson and Joe Maphis.
