This book is not about unregistered immigrants, amnesty, the border, or any political policy concerning these issues. For the sake of clarity and continuity, all individuals of Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican, Central American, South American, Cuban, and Puerto Rican descent shall hereafter be referred to as “Hispanics.” United States citizens who are originally from these nations and continents, or those whose ancestry descends from them, shall hereafter be referred to as “Hispanic Americans” regardless of color, race, or creed. (The term “Hispanic” was chosen over the term “Latino” as all sources cited agreed on the meaning of “Hispanic” but disagreed greatly on the meaning of “Latino.” The term “Chicano” has been rejected for use because of its origin as a word to describe Hispanic gang members and criminals, first coined by members of gangs such as the Pachucos of the mid 1930s; is considered to be a disparaging label to many groups, and is even considered to be vulgar in some circles. For the purposes of this study, the predominant European Caucasian culture of our society will be referred to as “Anglo American.” Any attempt to read racism, ethnic hatred, or disparagement of any kind to any individual, group, ethnicity, culture, or race into this study, will be solely on the part of the reader, and not the author. The time has come to recognize that they are here to stay.” Herman Badillo 1 I used to say Republicans should reach out toward everyone exactly the same way; without taking any notice of their age, gender, or ethnicity, and I sounded really good when I said it. The problem of course is that the idea that everyone should be approached as if they were all the same is merely a politically correct idea, and it’s wrong, and it’s wrongheaded. Everyone is created equal, but everyone responds to different stimuli. One would neither approach a seventy year old man with a lollipop, nor a six year old with a bottle of scotch. The same common sense can be applied to winning votes. Approaching individuals based upon those things that would be easiest for them to understand and most appealing to their way of thinking and manner of interpreting issues is simply smart. What’s more, dealing with voters on an individual level, one at a time, would be the very best way to reach them, since any approach could be tailor made to their personal background, tastes, and ideas. However, the resources simply do not exist for the Republican Party to approach every person on an individual level. (Even the Dems can’t do that.) What we can do, is be far more proactive in adapting our approach to those different groups that share certain commonalities within themselves. Now, we already do this to a certain extent. We have many Republican Clubs based on gender, age, and ethnicity, such as the Young Republicans, The Republican Women’s Federation, and The National Black Republican Association. However, it’s time to increase our outreach to Hispanic American Voters and learn to become far more effective at winning them. Why
