The origin of this thesis is, like many others before it, born from a sense of disjuncture between what I heard about something, and what I experienced of it. The ‘something’ in question is what is increasingly, and I believe somewhat erroneously, termed as ‘new audio culture’. By this I refer to all scholarly and popular talk and activity concerning iPods, MP3s, headphones, and podcasts: everything which we may understand as being tethered to an older history of audio-media, yet which is more often defined almost exclusively by its digital parameters. -

Oliver Sacks, MD, FRCP
Biography Oliver Sacks, MD, FRCP Oliver Sacks was born in 1933 in London, England, into a family of physicians and scientists (his mother was a surgeon and his father a general practitioner). He earned his medical degree at Oxford University (Queen’s College), and did residencies and fellowship work at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco and at UCLA. Since 1965, he has lived in New York, where he is a practicing neurologist. From 2007 to 2012, he served as a Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, and he was also designated the university’s first Columbia University Artist. Dr. Sacks is currently a professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine, where he practices as part of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Warwick. In 1966 Dr. Sacks began working as a consulting neurologist for Beth Abraham Hospital in the Bronx, a chronic care hospital where he encountered an extraordinary group of patients, many of whom had spent decades in strange, frozen states, like human statues, unable to initiate movement. He recognized these patients as survivors of the great pandemic of sleepy sickness that had swept the world from 1916 to 1927, and treated them with a then-experimental drug, L-dopa, which enabled them to come back to life. They became the subjects of his book, Awakenings, which later inspired a play by Harold Pinter (“A Kind of Alaska”) and the Oscar-nominated feature film (“Awakenings”) with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. Sacks is perhaps best known for his collections of case histories from the far borderlands of neurological experience, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars, in which he describes patients struggling to live with conditions ranging from Tourette’s syndrome to autism, parkinsonism, musical hallucination, epilepsy, phantom limb syndrome, schizophrenia, retardation, and Alzheimer’s disease. -

Music plays as Jesse speaks, then fades out. 00:00:19 Jesse Host It’s Bullseye. I’m Jesse Thorn. Oliver Sacks was maybe one of the Thorn most fascinating people of the 20th century. And that’s not something that I say lightly. He was an accomplished neurologist. He was a champion bodybuilder, a bestselling author who wrote books like Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. His writing, beautiful, elegant prose, focused mostly on the human brain and how it responds to the outside world. He covered migraine, Tourette’s, deafness, and more. In 2015, he was diagnosed with cancer. It had metastasized and he didn’t have long to live. Before he died in August of that year, he approached the documentarian Ric Burns. Burns had previously made the films New York: A Documentary Film and The Chinese Exclusion Act. He’d also collaborated with his brother, Ken Burns, on the landmark docuseries The Civil War. In Oliver Sack: His Own Life, Burns spent hour after hour with Sacks, interviewing him, his friends and family, his partner—Bill Hayes—and just, you know, rolling tape as friends and acquaintances came and went. -

From gene therapy to designer babies, therapeutic uses of blood doping to scandals in cycling, the effects of scientific 2 advancement and their engagements with existence as we know it permeate facets of our lives, some of which we might not even realize. As we consider what drives these developments and what are the underlying ethical implications of pushing the boundaries of the human, students will design, create, and communicate their ideas on the subject through various modes and media. -
