Music plays as Jesse speaks, then fades out. 00:00:19 Jesse Host It’s Bullseye. I’m Jesse Thorn. Oliver Sacks was maybe one of the Thorn most fascinating people of the 20th century. And that’s not something that I say lightly. He was an accomplished neurologist. He was a champion bodybuilder, a bestselling author who wrote books like Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. His writing, beautiful, elegant prose, focused mostly on the human brain and how it responds to the outside world. He covered migraine, Tourette’s, deafness, and more. In 2015, he was diagnosed with cancer. It had metastasized and he didn’t have long to live. Before he died in August of that year, he approached the documentarian Ric Burns. Burns had previously made the films New York: A Documentary Film and The Chinese Exclusion Act. He’d also collaborated with his brother, Ken Burns, on the landmark docuseries The Civil War. In Oliver Sack: His Own Life, Burns spent hour after hour with Sacks, interviewing him, his friends and family, his partner—Bill Hayes—and just, you know, rolling tape as friends and acquaintances came and went. -

BILL HAYES REMEMBERS HIS PARTNER NEUROLOGIST OLIVER SACKS by Farhad J
DEAR DEPARTED: BILL HAYES REMEMBERS HIS PARTNER NEUROLOGIST OLIVER SACKS By Farhad J. Dadyburjor, March 11, 2018 Bill Hayes left San Francisco after 25 years of living there when his long-time partner, Steve, died unexpectedly. He wanted a fresh start and moved to New York City, not realising that this would lead him to fall in love thrice over – with renowned neurologist Dr Oliver Sacks who Hayes was with, till his death from cancer in August 2015; with New York and its people as a muse to his creativity; and his own internal love affair as a writer and photographer. He chronicles all of this in his exquisitely written memoir, Insomniac City: New York, Oliver, and Me. “I aimed for discretion. I didn’t want it to be explicit, but I wanted it to be intimate. I think there’s a fine line between the two” Ask him how he managed to remember specific details and conversations after all these years, and Bill says, “There was a very important event that happened to me on May 9, 2009. Oliver Sacks, who I was just getting to know, told me that I must keep a journal. And I wrote those exact words down on a scrap of paper: ‘You must keep a journal’,” he smiles. “From that day on, I would write down stories, encounters on the subway, conversations with taxi drivers, go-go boys, homeless people… When I came to write this book after Oliver had died, I had a 750-page journal to go through. The dialogues, the conversations, the details were all there.” Love, life, lifetimes Hayes first got acquainted with Sacks through a series of letters over the proofs of one of Hayes’ books (The Anatomist: A True Story of Gray’s Anatomy) that the doctor had enjoyed and promised to provide a blurb for, but forgot. -

Vulcan Productions, Steeplechase Films, American Masters Pictures, Motto Pictures, Passion Pictures, and Tangled Bank Studios present Oliver Sacks: His Own Life Directed by Ric Burns PHOTO CREDIT: BILL HAYES 2019 Press Notes Runtime: 114 Minutes OliverSacksMovie.com “Tender and thrilling” VARIETY “Thoughtful, deeply affecting film” HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Press Contact US Sales FRANK PR SUBMARINE Stephanie Davidson | 201-704-1382 Josh Braun | 212-625-1410 [email protected] [email protected] Oliver Sacks: His Own Life Logline Oliver Sacks: His Own Life explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller, as he shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Sacks was a fearless explorer of unknown mental worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind, the diversity of human experience, and our shared humanity. Short Synopsis A month after receiving a fatal diagnosis in January 2015, Oliver Sacks sat down for a series of filmed interviews in his apartment in New York City. For eighty hours, surrounded by family, friends, and notebooks from six decades of thinking and writing about the brain, he talked about his life and work, his abiding sense of wonder at the natural world, and the place of human beings within it. Drawing on these deeply personal reflections, as well as nearly two dozen interviews with close friends, family members, colleagues and patients, and archival material from every point in his life, this film is the story of a beloved doctor and writer who redefined our understanding of the brain and mind. -

Transcript for Brian Brushwood | Scam School & The Modern Rogue (Episode 628) Full show notes found here: https://theartofcharm.com/628/ BRIAN: Thats when I realized that the structure of a magic trick, that the art of deception, if I could educate other people, if other people knew magic the way I knew magic, then that would put them in a position where they would have that low grade alarm ready to go off at all times. JORDAN: Welcome to The Art of Charm. Im Jordan Harbinger. Im here with producer Jason DeFillippo. On this episode of AoC, well be talking with my friend Brian Brushwood. This guy is incredible. He used to be on Scam School, one of the first podcasts ever, ever. They were in there when we started. Brian Brushwood has spent the last 20 years performing on stage, on TV, on the Internet of course, and entertaining and teaching people how to harness the deceptive and self deceptive skills of scientists, spies, criminals, and con artists. But hes a great guy, just take my word for it. Of course whether were aware of it or not, these factors that we discuss today are the ones that shape our perceptions of the world, and if you dont learn them they can be used to manipulate you. So, on this episode well discover why being engaging isnt a gift, its a practice, well explore something called fixed action patterns and how they can help us get others to do what we want them to do -- only for good things of course. -
