Submission to BirdLife Australia Rarities Committee Submission No. Species: Blue-winged pitta Pitta moluccensis Location: Christmas Island Observation Date: 14 December 1901 Submission Date Submitted by: Ian McAllan Address: Circumstances The Blue-winged Pitta Pitta moluccensis is on the BARC Australian Checklist based upon a specimen collected on Christmas Island in 1901 and housed in the Museum of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK (Benson 1970; Christidis & Boles 1994). Two records have since been submitted to BARC from mainland Western Australia (Cases 219 & 241), and the author is aware of another four reports, three from mainland Western Australia and one from Christmas Island (c.f. Serventy 1968; Johnstone & Hamilton 1995; Johnstone & Storr 2004; James & McAllan 2014). This submission concerns only the 1901 specimen, which has not been reviewed by BARC. The specimen was examined and photographed during a visit to the Museum of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK on 29 May 2018. Benson’s account of the specimen. Benson noted that the specimen was received from H.E. Durham, of whom he gave no other information. He also noted that the specimen had originally been identified as Pitta vigorsii , now a subspecies of Elegant Pitta Pitta elegans . Benson noted that there were some other specimens in the Cambridge University collection that were Christmas Island endemics that were collected by Benson at the same time. Dr H.E. Durham In 1901–1903 Dr Herbert Edward Durham was the leader of an expedition from the London School of Tropical Medicine to Christmas Island and Malaya to study beri beri (Lapage 1945). At his time there was an outbreak of the vitamin deficiency disease with 229 people dying on the Island during that year (Adams & Neale 1993). -

We visited Timor, Sumba, Flores and Komodo in search of Indonesia’s rarest and least known species, ending up on Bali in search of the famous starlings. These islands are relatively undeveloped, thinly populated and seldom visited by birders but they gave us access to some of the rarest birds on the planet. Starting on the largest island, Timor with its dry grassland, acacia scrub and montane forest, it is home to the greatest number of endemics. We had to split our time here in two due to a last-minute rescheduling of our internal flights and this did affect our success here a little but we still managed to see most of what the island has to offer. Then we flew across to the arid island of Sumba which is the most isolated and least often visited. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. For good, and bad, we experienced some examples of this during this successful tour on this resource-rich island, and ammased a great trip list of 407 species . Some of what we saw was very much expected: a slew of species from arguably the most spectacular bird family on the planet, the outrageous birds-of-paradise. We picked up 24 species of birds-of-paradise on the tour, with the majority being males, some of which were seen in full, jaw-dropping display mode! The flurry of displaying male Greater Birds-of-paradise during a late afternoon show in the steamy lowland jungle near Kiunga standing out, as did the wonderful performance put on by PNG’s national bird, the Raggiana Bird-of- paradise near the nation’s capital, at Varirata NP. Getting a bunch of BOPs was expected, even in the land of the unexpected. However, on only our third day in the country watching a tree full of BOPs, of NINE different species (and 3 sicklebill species at one time in the same tree ) was very much unexpected even in New Guinea. -

Impacts of Deforestation on the Conservation Status of Endemic Birds in the North Maluku Endemic Bird Area from 1990-2003 John Vetter Dr. Jennifer Swenson, Advisor May 2009 Master's Project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Environmental Management degree in the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University May 2009 Abstract Satellite imagery has become a powerful tool to analyze land-use trends across large portions of the globe, including remote areas where access is logistically or political impossible. Due to the rapid pace of deforestation, the high biodiversity contained within, and the difficulty of access and standardized field surveys, the tropics are a key front for using remote sensing to identify target areas for conservation action and, more recently, to inform species-level trends. This study focuses on deforestation in eastern Indonesia, which has some of the highest rates of forest clearing in the world from mining, plantation expansion, timber extraction, and shifting agriculture. Forest loss on the highly biodiverse islands of the North Maluku district in eastern Indonesia was examined from 1990 to 2003 and the conservation status of 39 restricted-range avian species found in the area was re-assessed from these trends. Of the land area available for analysis, forests declined from 86% to just under 70% in these thirteen years, with much of this occurring in the lowlands (below 400m). Consequently, those species with large amounts of their range at low elevations were disproportionately affected, with 10 out of 25 endemic species being under more threat than currently listed by the IUCN Red List and only 3 being considered safer than currently listed. -

The western half of the island of New Guinea comprises the Indonesian provinces of West Papua (Papua Barat) and Papua, collectively once called West Irian or Irian Jaya; the eastern half of the main island of New Guinea comprises the country of Papua New Guinea. We will be based in West Papua for this exhilarating, small-group birding adventure. Aside from the large landmass of New Guinea, the New Guinea region includes numerous small islands (some part of Indonesia and others part of Papua New Guinea), and we will visit one of these areas: Waigeo, part of the Raja Ampat Archipelago in West Papua (also known as the Northwestern Islands). Approximately 680 bird species have been recorded from West Papua, from slightly more than 700 for the whole New Guinea region. Some 550 species are considered breeding residents, with 279 New Guinea endemics (found in Indonesia and/or Papua New Guinea) and at least an additional 42 endemics found only in West Papua. There are also over 115 Palearctic and Australian migrant species and a range of seabirds which spend some of their time in West Papua. This tour will begin in the town of Manokwari, situated on the north-eastern tip of West Papua's Bird's Head (or Vogelkop) Peninsula where we could get our tour started with the gorgeous Lesser Bird-of-paradise, this area is usually great for Blyth’s Hornbill and numerous fruit doves. -
