  • 2007-2008, Covering the Period July 1, 2007 Through June 30, 2008
Message from the President Dear Friends, There was much to celebrate during this past year at Marywood University. From a personal perspective, it was a transformative experience to serve my inaugural year as Marywood’s 11th president. However, I do not and could not do this alone. While this special year has provided an exciting backdrop, the meaningful role that each of you plays in shaping the future of this University is the underpinning of what continues to inspire and create our outstanding progress. In keeping with the spirit of progress, we decided this year to produce a “green” President’s Report— a solely online piece—to reduce our use of paper products and take another positive step in our ongoing efforts to cultivate and practice environmental stewardship. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, “institutions of higher education are poised to play a leading role in developing and executing climate-neutral policies.” (“A Green Curriculum Involves Everyone on the Campus,” by John Peterson, June 20, 2008 issue) Marywood University continues to evaluate its current practices and engage in future initiatives with environmental considerations in mind—for the benefit of our students, our campus, our community, and our world. This report represents the fiscal year 2007-2008, covering the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Please accept my deepest appreciation for all you have done to advance the goals, initiatives, and mission of Marywood University. I am enthusiastic about the progress we have made, as well as the momentum we continue to generate, and I look to our future with great optimism and abundant hope.

  • Observation of the Mass Difference Between Neutral Charm-Meson Eigenstates R
PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 127, 111801 (2021) Editors' Suggestion Featured in Physics Observation of the Mass Difference between Neutral Charm-Meson Eigenstates R. Aaij et al.* (LHCb Collaboration) (Received 8 June 2021; accepted 8 July 2021; published 7 September 2021) A measurement of mixing and CP violation in neutral charm mesons is performed using data reconstructed in proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018, 5 4 −1 D0 → K0 πþπ− corresponding to an integrated luminosity of . fb . A total of 30.6 million S decays are analyzed using a method optimized for the measurement of the mass difference between neutral charm- meson eigenstates. Allowing for CP violation in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, −3 the mass and decay-width differences are measured to be xCP ¼½3.97 Æ 0.46ðstatÞ0.29ðsystÞ × 10 −3 and yCP ¼½4.59 Æ 1.20ðstatÞ0.85ðsystÞ × 10 , respectively. The CP-violating parameters are mea- sured as Δx¼½−0.27Æ0.18ðstatÞ0.01ðsystÞ×10−3 and Δy ¼½0.20 Æ 0.36ðstatÞ0.13ðsystÞ × 10−3. This is the first observation of a nonzero mass difference in the D0 meson system, with a significance exceeding seven standard deviations. The data are consistent with CP symmetry and improve existing constraints on the associated parameters. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.111801 Neutral charm mesons propagating freely can change as in the SM it is negligible for the doubly Cabibbo- (oscillate) into their own antiparticles, as the mass eigen- suppressed (DCS) and Cabibbo-favored (CF) amplitudes states are linear combinations of the flavor eigenstates.

141ST ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT MAY 13, 2017 The University Charter The origins of Southern Illinois University Carbondale date to “An Act to Establish and Maintain the Southern Illinois Normal University” approved by the Illinois General Assembly on March 9, 1869. The act defined the new university’s purpose as “to qualify teachers for the common schools of this state by imparting instruction in the art of teaching in all branches of study which pertain to a common school education in the elements of the natural sciences including agricultural chemistry, animal and vegetable physiology, in the fundamental laws of the United States and of the State of Illinois in regard to the rights and duties of citizens and such other studies as the board of education may from time to time prescribe.” It included provisions for appointment of a Board of Trustees. One of the board’s first orders of business under the act would be to “advertise for proposals from localities desiring to secure the location of said Normal University.” The act required the board to “locate the institution at such point, as shall, all things considered, offer the most advantageous conditions. The land shall be selected south of the Railroad, or within six miles north of said road, passing from St. Louis to Terre Haute known as the Alton and Terre Haute railroad, with a view of obtaining a good supply of water and other conveniences for the use of the institution.” The act defines how buildings would be constructed, as well as procedures for selecting students. It assigned a budget of $75,000 for construction of buildings and for furnishings.
