    THE ROWDOWN INSPIRE TO ASPIRE FOUNDATION TUITION PROGRAMME • The Rowdown Foundation was set up in 2013 to support gifted and talented children at one school (Rowdown Primary School) in New Addington to pursue their talent where their parents cannot afford to, initially supporting a young pianist, a dancer and a gymnast. The Foundation also organises the annual school awards, aimed at inspiring all pupils to want to achieve. • We noticed: . teachers do a great job at getting the majority of pupils ready for secondary school despite the challenges that primary schools in New Addington face; . higher attaining pupils such as your children do well at their primary school but all of the local comprehensive schools have a poor record of progress for these high attainers; . parents of these children are generally unaware of their option to apply to selective grammar or independent schools or semi-selective state schools where New Addington is outside their catchment area. There is also often a misunderstanding, and even mistrust, of selective schools as being only for the more affluent; . even when parents aspire to such schools, they do not have the means to provide additional support to their child to help them compete against the many children applying to them that have been tutored or attend private preparatory schools. • In 2014, we set up a “Tuition Programme”, providing a private tutor for small groups of 4 or 5 pupils in each of Years 3, 4 and 5 (and into Year 6). Initially one hour of tuition was provided per week in small groups of 4-5 children, increasing to two hours per week for the Year 5 group.

Besides drawing on the literature, the review is based on four main lines of evidence: • new databases, including a schools’ dataset for the academic year 2006-07 compiled from information provided by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Independent Schools Council (ISC), and a teachers’ dataset commissioned from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA); • re-working of published statistics, including those from HESA’s Performance Indicators in Higher Education and the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and re-analysing headteacher interviews; • biographical searches of the school backgrounds of members of various occupations and endeavours; • survey of the community involvement and partnerships of HMC schools.

This year we faced the unprecedented situation of schools in the UK closing in March and moving to remote learning. Staff and students at Old Palace rose to the challenges faced and showed incredible creativity in managing to continue with many extra-curricular and enrichment activities in a ‘remote’ way, using technology. The school community enjoyed activities such as online church services, virtual choirs, House activities, student and staff videos, prizegiving and more. These activities helped to keep the school community connected during this difficult period and was very much appreciated by everyone involved.     Headmaster’s Weekly Newsletter 6 March 2020 Dear Parents and Friends, Our senior pupils and staff have been hard at work this week. As Year 13 completed their Trial Exams, and some of our Year 11 pupils received the results of their early entry GCSE Maths examinations. Three sets sat the foundation tier examination in January achieving an outstanding level of success, which will give them a great confidence boost at this important point of their public examination preparation. As our pupil recruitment programme draws to a close, it is very pleasing to record that interest in joining the School at Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10 is as strong as ever. I am particularly pleased with the balance of pupils who have been selected for Year 7, where the mix of our own Junior School pupils, combined with a new intake selected from another 45 different schools, will create a very exciting and diverse group of young people who will contribute to the School greatly in the future. To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday, the Library held its annual sale of books, DVDs and games. Pupils and staff were able to browse a huge selection of fiction and non-fiction books and over £70 was raised for BLESMA, the limbless veterans’ charity. In our Russell Talks programme, Nadeem Mukri gave a very informative presentation on ‘Robots’, suggesting that many of our roles could be replaced by machines in the future! Isabelle Bennett gave the Junior Russell Talk on careers in medicine. Our trips programme this week has included a Buchanan Theatre Trip to ‘The Boyfriend’, a Year 12 English Literature Theatre Trip to ‘A Doll's House’ and a GCSE Art Trip.

If not one of their ‘Five A Day’, a theatre trip should be one of five cultural experiences that every student enjoys while at school. ccording to a recent poll of 11 – 18 year olds only 53% of students Ahad been taken to the theatre by their school. Cuts in school budgets mean that money for cultural trips is scanter than ever. Add cover and coach fares to a ticket price and headteachers have to think long and hard before disrupting timetables and diverting funds from other pressing needs. This means that most students meet Romeo and Juliet in a classroom without ever having the opportunity of seeing the play in a theatre. Studying Shakespeare may be compulsory in school but seeing a play in performance, sadly and strangely, is not. Enlightened boroughs, such as Newham and Southwark, are seeking to address the issue. They appreciate the importance of introducing students to live theatre. I hope other boroughs will follow their lead. Newham’s programme, Every Child A Theatre Goer, covers the cost of a theatre visit for every Year 10 pupil across the borough. Thousands of Newham students have been to the Globe thanks to the scheme. Our own borough of Southwark is developing a similar programme for primary school children. Theatre should be regarded as a cultural entitlement. Theatres have to play their part by keeping theatre tickets as affordable as possible. Some theatres receive Arts Council subsidy. Shakespeare’s Globe does not. So we rely on trusts and foundations and the corporate pound to support our educational mission and to help make the Globe as popular a theatre as it was in Shakespeare’s day.
