Catalog 10 Flyers + Boo-hooray May 2021 22 eldridge boo-hooray.com New york ny Boo-Hooray Catalog #10: Flyers Boo-Hooray is proud to present our tenth antiquarian catalog, exploring the ephemeral nature of the flyer. We love marginal scraps of paper that become important artifacts of historical import decades later. In this catalog of flyers, we celebrate phenomenal throwaway pieces of paper in music, art, poetry, film, and activism. Readers will find rare flyers for underground films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol; incredible early hip-hop flyers designed by Buddy Esquire and others; and punk artifacts of Crass, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the underground Austin scene. Also included are scarce protest flyers and examples of mutual aid in the 20th Century, such as a flyer from Angela Davis speaking in Harlem only months after being found not guilty for the kidnapping and murder of a judge, and a remarkably illustrated flyer from a free nursery in the Lower East Side. For over a decade, Boo-Hooray has been committed to the organization, stabilization, and preservation of cultural narratives through archival placement. Today, we continue and expand our mission through the sale of individual items and smaller collections. We encourage visitors to browse our extensive inventory of rare books, ephemera, archives and collections and look forward to inviting you back to our gallery in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Catalog prepared by Evan Neuhausen, Archivist & Rare Book Cataloger and Daylon Orr, Executive Director & Rare Book Specialist; with Beth Rudig, Director of Archives. Scholars to examine queer aesthetic in films http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/060119/queercinema.shtml Scholars to examine queer aesthetic in films By Jennifer Carnig January 19, 2006 News Office Vol. 25 No. 8 Long before Brokeback Mountain hit the big screen, films such as Kenneth Anger’s current issue Scorpio Rising, Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures and Andy Warhol’s Chelsea Girls archive / search brought queer imagery to the 1960s art house circuit. Now a new film series will contact bring these and other films from the genre to campus each Friday through Feb. 10. Chronicle RSS Feed Though these films are widely regarded as some of the most important and influential films of postwar underground cinema, only recently have cinema scholars begun to take seriously the fact that Anger, Smith and Warhol were filmmakers whose work delivered a “distinctly queer aesthetic,” said Ron Gregg, Lecturer and Director of Programming for Cinema & Media Studies. In an attempt to explore the idea of a queer aesthetic further, Gregg—along with George Chauncey, Professor in History and the College and Director of the Center for Gender Studies, and Michelle Puetz, a Cinema & Media Studies graduate student and coordinator of the Experimental Film Club—organized a film series that will offer screenings every Friday through Feb. 10. “Beyond Warhol, Smith and Anger: Recovering the Significance of Postwar Queer Underground Cinema, 1950-1968” will include two dozen films created by mostly New York-based filmmakers, performers, writers and artists. Not all of the filmmakers included in the series were gay, but “their creative energies came out of a highly gay influenced cultural world,” Gregg said.

  • Reviews & Press •
REVIEWS & PRESS J. Hoberman. On Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures (and Other Secret-Flix of Cinemaroc). Granary Books, & Hip’s Road, 2001. • Grubbs, David. "Review of On Jack Smith's 'Flaming Creatures.' " Bookforum 9.1: 15. It's a shame that Ted Turner dropped out of the film-colorization business before tackling Flaming Creatures. I'm trying to imagine Jack Smith's washed-out, defiantly low-contrast 1963 film being given the full treatment. Flaming Creatures is the work for which Smith is best known, a film that landed exhibitors in a vortex of legal trouble and quickly became the most reviled of '60s underground features. As J. Hoberman writes, "Flaming Creatures is the only American avant-garde film whose reception approximates the scandals that greeted L'Age d'Or or Zéro de Conduite." Smith's self-described comedy in a "haunted movie studio" is a forty-two-minute series of attractions that include false starts, primping, limp penises, bouncing breasts, a fox-trot, an orgy, a transvestite vampire, an outsized painting of a vase, and perilous stretches of inactivity. The sound track juxtaposes Bartók, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, the Everly Brothers, and an audience-baiting minutes-long montage of screams. Still, one suspects that the greatest trespass may have been putting Smith's queer "creatures" on display. If Hoberman's monograph makes Smith's filmic demimonde less other-worldly—colorizes it, if without the Turner motive—it does so in a manner more akin to the 1995 restoration of Jacques Tati's 1948 Jour de Fête. Tati's film was shot simultaneously in color and in black and white; had the experimental Thomson-Color process worked at the time, it would have been the first French full-length color film.

Celebrating Jonas Mekas Birth of a Nation February 13, 2019 — Artists’ Television Access presented in association with the Canyon Cinema Foundation Jonas Mekas (1922–2019), tireless advocate for the underdog, was without a doubt the world’s foremost advocate for personal/underground/avant-garde cinema. As a poet, publisher, filmmaker, curator, critic, archivist, rabble rouser and hopeless romantic, his cultural influence cannot be underestimated. Born in Semeniskiai, Lithuania, Mekas emigrated to the U.S. in 1949 (after imprisonment in a German labor camp and life in a displaced persons camp), fell in love with New York City and immediately took to filmmaking, a practice he maintained to the end of his life, eventually pioneering the personal diary into an epic film genre. By 1955 he was co-publisher (with his brother Adolfas) of Film Culture, a journal articulating the aesthetics of underground cinema which was published quarterly until 1995, while his Village Voice column “Movie Journal”—which ran 1958–1978—presented weekly updates on the New York underground scene of the day while cultivating community and bracingly attacking mainstream cinema. A visionary infrastructuralist, Mekas’ establishment of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative (in 1962) and Anthology Film Archives (in 1970) ensured that underground and personal film would be preserved and cherished for generations. In this screening San Francisco Cinematheque and Canyon Cinema celebrate the life of Jonas Mekas with a special screening of his 1997 film Birth of a Nation (1997): 160 portraits/appearances, sketches and glimpses of avant-garde, independent filmmakers and film activists, filmed 1955—1996, a celebration of Mekas’ artistic community and adopted homeland.

Velvet Underground: New York Extravaganza Previously on 30 March – 21 August 2016 at Philharmonie de Paris Fifty years after the release of Velvet Underground’s first album, this exhibition at the Philharmonie de Paris explores the history of one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. The retrospective delves into the fascinating roots of the group, weaving in stories of Andy Warhol’s Factory era and the rise of the Beat Generation, to present vivid insight into the evolution of America’s post-war cultural landscape. Despite a relatively short career, Lou Reed and his band influenced generations of musicians, including Iggy Pop and David Bowie, and the exhibition presents a brilliant opportunity to rediscover their original hits, including ‘Heroin’ and ‘Venus in Furs’. MoMA PRESENTS ANDY WARHOL’S INFLUENTIAL FILMED PORTRAITS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN GALLERY SETTING Salvador Dalí, “Baby” Jane Holzer, Dennis Hopper, Edie Sedgwick, Susan Sontag Among the 28 Celluloid Portraits Andy Warhol: Screen Tests May 1–September 1, 2003 MoMA QNS NEW YORK, April 17, 2003—The Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s cinematic portraits in Andy Warhol: Screen Tests, on view at MoMA QNS from May 1 to September 1, 2003. The 28 works, shown by MoMA for the first time in a gallery setting, reveal Warhol’s lifelong fascination with the cult of celebrity and feature Dennis Hopper, Salvador Dalí, Edie Sedgwick, and other artists, actors, writers, models, musicians, and visitors to Warhol’s Factory. The Screen Tests have been adapted for gallery exhibition, each group of tests playing continuously, so visitors will be able to see the full selection in a single viewing. These black-and-white, silent films from the mid-1960s were selected from the Museum’s extensive Warhol film holdings, and are among the 277 of Warhol’s 500 Screen Tests that have been restored by the Museum to date. The exhibition was organized by Mary Lea Bandy, Chief Curator, Department of Film and Media. “As an artist working with fashion and media throughout his career, Warhol played with hip celebrity like no one else,” says Ms. Bandy. “Yet there is texture and beauty behind the dazzle or deadpan of his sitters’ moods, and fluidity and ease in experimenting with shifts and interactions of mediums: the held pose, its particular stillness, and the slowed motion, make the portraits both photograph and film.
