CHS Book Sept 24, 2008 Cheltenham High School Class of 1958 50th Reunion Weekend October 25 and 26, 2008 June 1958, is it really 50 years? We said good-bye to CHS with laughter and through tears. Now is the time to come together, to re-live happy days, to share the stories of our lives since we parted ways. Come solo, bring your spouse, a date, a friend or significant other. We have decided to hold the reunion at the Huntingdon Valley Country Club to be as convenient for all the classmates that have stayed nearby as well as giving you out-of-towners a chance to return to the old neighborhood. Do you remember – Double dates, lunch boxes with thermos, the Hot Shoppe, Lee’s Hoagies, Erlen theater? When war was a card game. How about Willow Grove Park? Howdy Doody? Lone Ranger? Walking to school? Farber’s? 3-D movies? The Shadow knows? Go to our website, WWW.CHS1958.NET (old url still works) for updated information on the weekend. Also look under ‘Class Roster’. Check for incorrect information. Contact old friends. Hunt down the missing. Let Mickey Langsfeld at 1673 Paper Mill Road, Meadowbrook, PA, 19046 or [email protected] know about any of these changes or additions. As part of our celebration, we hope to put together a souvenir yearbook. Please fill in and send the enclosed page that should include your name at the top with your address, telephone number and e-mail address. Please include a recent photo. The remainder is your call – spouses, kids, grandchildren, Cheltenham memories or anything that can be printed. Even if you cannot come, send in so we can let classmates know about you. Like to have copy-ready for reproducing if possible. You can also send by e-mail. The cost is $85 per person for the weekend. Make your check out to Richard Stern and send it and the enclosed page to him at 660 Hidden Pond Lane, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. Money is fully refundable if you cannot make it. Deadline is May 1, 2008. The committee looks forward to hearing from everyone. Cheltenham High School Class of 1958 50th Reunion Weekend. We are both retired and enjoying ourselves. Jim was an electrical engineer and I, after teaching awhile, became a Sales Rep for a college textbook company for many years. We now keep busy enjoying our homes in Penna, New Jersey and Florida. Jim loves his Jaguar hobby and I’m usually out with my antique groups, shopping, entertaining or getting ready for our 5 grandkids and families to visit. Jim Jr, our oldest, lives in Pittsburgh with his 4 little ones and John and his 1 and only on the way, lives nearby. It seems we are always on vacation – that’s fun! Geraldine Averell Wernet (Gerry) 342 Oxford Road Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462-7170 610-277-7324 [email protected] Looking forward to our 50th CHS Class Reunion. My husband Dutch and I will be there! We are shy of celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary by one year. We have three daughters who we are very proud of. Our daughters Gerry and Chris are nurses and our daughter Catherine just graduated in May 2007 with her Doctorate in Psychology. They are all happily married and have made us grandparents to eight wonderful grandchildren. I retired from full time employment with the Augustinian Order at Villanova after 23 years of service working mainly in their Development and Communications offices. My husband worked as a hardware/software engineer. He was ordained a Deacon in 1999 and assigned to our parish at Epiphany of Our Lord Church in Plymouth Meeting. I enjoy painting (watercolors and oils), gardening, entering baking contests, walking (have done two 3-Day Breast Cancer 60 mile walks to raise funds for research and have done a walk for Autism Awareness), but most of all love to watch our grandchildren and go to their extra-curricular activities. We also raise funds at the Christmas holidays for underprivileged children. We have traveled to many interesting countries over the past 25 years. I think climbing the Great Wall of China and our experience in Russia and the former Yugoslavia are ones I will never forget. I can't wait to see everyone again. Mimi Barsh Brown 131 S. Founders Court Warrington, PA 18976 215-491-5757 [email protected] Looking forward to this one. Seems incredible that we are celebrating our 50th. Tom Bauer 2621 Alcott Lane Austin, TX 78748 Married: Lyle Jean with 5 children Graduated 1962 from Bucknell University – B.S. chemistry Retired in 2006 after 28 years with Georgia-Pacific in Lufkin, TX as a R & D chemist – 11 years and Quality Assurance Supervisor for 17 years. Also served 22 years as a pianist/organist for a Methodist church in Macugduches, TX. Most vivid memory: 1) Running to the cheers of the football crowd during last 100 yards at cross country race. Coach – Mr. Delaney (physics) 2) Our football game with Abington – the crowd was ecstatic (we either tied or won) as the underdog triumphed. Marcia Beisswenger Schwefler 1658 Chateau Drive Atlanta, Georgia 30338 (770) 396-6296 [email protected] I don’t feel any older than I did in High School, except I don’t have a ponytail anymore. I went to Temple University and my first job was with Trans World Airlines down at 3 Penn Center Plaza. I then became a flight attendant and flew out of Boston for a year, then back to Philadelphia to the City Ticket Office. I have always had the desire to travel and still do. I met my husband Dave at a block party in downtown Philly when we were in our 20’s. Our paths had crossed but we hadn’t formally met in Somers Point, NJ at Tony Marts. We have been married for 42 years; who would have thought it possible? We moved to Atlanta in December 1971 after living in Ocean City, NJ for a couple of years. My husband’s brother was here in Stone Mountain so that was a big reason why we moved. We have 3 grown children, Eric 40, JD 36 and Linda 34 and 5 wonderful grandchildren Kennedy is 11, Ferris is 7, Quinn is 3, Luke is 2 soon to be 3, and Andrew 11 mos. and JD is not even married but is dating a lovely young woman. My daughter in law Patti and son in law Chris are terrific as well. I went back to work part time when my children were in junior high school and got my meeting planning certification 11 years ago and worked in the Corporate world for 14 years in Training. Below are my favorite five! My oldest son and their family just moved to Summit, NJ so we really miss them. We plan to visit after the reunion. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up. Marcia Charlotte Benner Sellers 2297 Jericho Drive Jamison, PA 18929-1523 215-491-9340 [email protected] 50 years! Doesn’t seem possible! Seems like yesterday I was twirling my baton with the CHS Marching Band, Pledging for Kappa Chi Delta, Going to the “Green Arrow” ( Had to honk when going under the bridge ), Drive-In Movies, Sock Hops, Saddle Shoes and Penny Loafers; Silk neck scarves, Peg Skirts, Skirts with starched crinolines under them, watching “American Bandstand”, The Bunny Hop,The Stroll. Summer vacation in Ocean City, The Cheltenham/Abington Rivalry (The Big football Game!), The Choir and District Chorus with June Taylor, and studying hard for The SAT’s. Yes indeed they were the “ HAPPY DAYS” I have been married 46 years to the love of my life ( Bob). We have three children: Robert Jr. ( an attorney ), Sandra ( a hairdresser ), and Susan ( a teacher). We have two Grandchildren ( Monica and Matthew). I fulfilled my aspirations made in high school and became a Registered Nurse. I graduated from Philadelphia General Hospital ( PGH ), in 1961, and later in my 30’s I received my BSN from Gwynedd Mercy College.

  • La Salle College High School Football: in Retrospect
La Salle College High School Football: In Retrospect NOTE: This is the eighth of, I hope, many retrospectives highlighting some unique history of the football program at La Salle. The topics to discuss seem endless at this time. Hope you enjoy these. Bill Wasylenko, ‘69 Issue Number Eight: Historic Battlefield Sites Recent road trips to Bergen Catholic and to Rutgers Stadium to play New York’s Monsignor Farrell proved to be the first forays into New Jersey for the Explorers since 1995, when they took on Cherokee in Marlton, after three consecutive years of battles with Holy Cross. Though the ventures outside of the Philadelphia area are now few and far between, it wasn’t that way in the early years of La Salle football. In fact, in the early years of La Salle football, many games were played in New Jersey. This probably occurred for a number of reasons. Prior to the existence of the Catholic League, which officially debuted in 1920, a football schedule must have been cobbled together each year, and the logic of playing schools in New Jersey is a little clearer when you realize that La Salle was on North Broad Street at the time, only a mile and a half from the Delaware River, so many Jersey schools were considered close enough to be scheduled. A game in 1903 was played against South Jersey Institute. In the teens and early twenties of the last century, New Jersey schools such as Vineland, Bridgeton, Wenonah, Hammonton, Atlantic City, Woodbury, and Palmyra played against La Salle. Cathedral in Trenton, Ocean City, Burlington, Moorestown, and Camden Catholic also took on the Explorers in the late 20’s.

Department of the Interior, Bureau of Education, Washington. Sir: Many students apply for admission to higher institutions in other States and sections than those in which they have received their high-school preparation. Many also seek certificates from ex¬ amining and licensing boards, which have no direct means of know¬ ing the standards of the schools from which the applicants come. The demand for this information led the Bureau of Education, first in the spring of 1913 and again in the autumn of 1914, to undertake the collection and preparation of lists of high schools and academies accredited by State universities, approved by State departments of education, or recognized by examining and certifying boards and by certain other agencies. The demand proved to be even greater than had been anticipated. The first edition of the bulletin was soon exhausted. There have be^n many requests from college and uni¬ versity officers for copies of the second edition. Moreover, changes are made in these lists of accredited schools from year to year.
