Cheltenham High School Class of 1958 50th Reunion Weekend October 25 and 26, 2008

June 1958, is it really 50 years? We said good-bye to CHS with laughter and through tears. Now is the time to come together, to re-live happy days, to share the stories of our lives since we parted ways.

Come solo, bring your spouse, a date, a friend or significant other. We have decided to hold the reunion at the Huntingdon Valley Country Club to be as convenient for all the classmates that have stayed nearby as well as giving you out-of-towners a chance to return to the old neighborhood.

Do you remember – Double dates, lunch boxes with thermos, the Hot Shoppe, Lee’s Hoagies, Erlen theater? When war was a card game. How about Willow Grove Park? Howdy Doody? Lone Ranger? Walking to school? Farber’s? 3-D movies? The Shadow knows?

Go to our website, WWW.CHS1958.NET (old url still works) for updated information on the weekend. Also look under ‘Class Roster’. Check for incorrect information. Contact old friends. Hunt down the missing. Let Mickey Langsfeld at 1673 Paper Mill Road, Meadowbrook, PA, 19046 or [email protected] know about any of these changes or additions.

As part of our celebration, we hope to put together a souvenir yearbook. Please fill in and send the enclosed page that should include your name at the top with your address, telephone number and e-mail address. Please include a recent photo. The remainder is your call – spouses, kids, grandchildren, Cheltenham memories or anything that can be printed. Even if you cannot come, send in so we can let classmates know about you. Like to have copy-ready for reproducing if possible. You can also send by e-mail.

The cost is $85 per person for the weekend. Make your check out to Richard Stern and send it and the enclosed page to him at 660 Hidden Pond Lane, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. Money is fully refundable if you cannot make it. Deadline is May 1, 2008.

The committee looks forward to hearing from everyone.

Our CHS romance (since 1955) has turned into a happy and wonderful 45+ years of married life! We are both retired and enjoying ourselves. Jim was an electrical engineer and I, after teaching awhile, became a Sales Rep for a college textbook company for many years. We now keep busy enjoying our homes in Penna, New Jersey and Florida. Jim loves his Jaguar hobby and I’m usually out with my antique groups, shopping, entertaining or getting ready for our 5 grandkids and families to visit. Jim Jr, our oldest, lives in Pittsburgh with his 4 little ones and John and his 1 and only on the way, lives nearby. It seems we are always on vacation – that’s fun!

Geraldine Averell Wernet (Gerry) 342 Oxford Road Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462-7170 610-277-7324 [email protected]

Looking forward to our 50th CHS Class Reunion. My husband Dutch and I will be there! We are shy of celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary by one year.

We have three daughters who we are very proud of. Our daughters Gerry and Chris are nurses and our daughter Catherine just graduated in May 2007 with her Doctorate in Psychology. They are all happily married and have made us grandparents to eight wonderful grandchildren.

I retired from full time employment with the Augustinian Order at Villanova after 23 years of service working mainly in their Development and Communications offices. My husband worked as a hardware/software engineer. He was ordained a Deacon in 1999 and assigned to our parish at Epiphany of Our Lord Church in Plymouth Meeting.

I enjoy painting (watercolors and oils), gardening, entering baking contests, walking (have done two 3-Day Breast Cancer 60 mile walks to raise funds for research and have done a walk for Autism Awareness), but most of all love to watch our grandchildren and go to their extra-curricular activities. We also raise funds at the Christmas holidays for underprivileged children.

We have traveled to many interesting countries over the past 25 years. I think climbing the Great Wall of China and our experience in Russia and the former Yugoslavia are ones I will never forget.

I can't wait to see everyone again.

I don’t feel any older than I did in High School, except I don’t have a ponytail anymore. I went to Temple University and my first job was with Trans World Airlines down at 3 Penn Center Plaza. I then became a flight attendant and flew out of Boston for a year, then back to to the City Ticket Office. I have always had the desire to travel and still do. I met my husband Dave at a block party in downtown Philly when we were in our 20’s. Our paths had crossed but we hadn’t formally met in Somers Point, NJ at Tony Marts.

We have been married for 42 years; who would have thought it possible? We moved to Atlanta in December 1971 after living in Ocean City, NJ for a couple of years. My husband’s brother was here in Stone Mountain so that was a big reason why we moved.

We have 3 grown children, Eric 40, JD 36 and Linda 34 and 5 wonderful grandchildren Kennedy is 11, Ferris is 7, Quinn is 3, Luke is 2 soon to be 3, and Andrew 11 mos. and JD is not even married but is dating a lovely young woman. My daughter in law Patti and son in law Chris are terrific as well. I went back to work part time when my children were in junior high school and got my meeting planning certification 11 years ago and worked in the Corporate world for 14 years in Training. Below are my favorite five! My oldest son and their family just moved to Summit, NJ so we really miss them. We plan to visit after the reunion.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up.

50 years! Doesn’t seem possible! Seems like yesterday I was twirling my baton with the CHS Marching Band, Pledging for Kappa Chi Delta, Going to the “Green Arrow” ( Had to honk when going under the bridge ), Drive-In Movies, Sock Hops, Saddle Shoes and Penny Loafers; Silk neck scarves, Peg Skirts, Skirts with starched crinolines under them, watching “American Bandstand”, The Bunny Hop,The Stroll. Summer vacation in Ocean City, The Cheltenham/Abington Rivalry (The Big football Game!), The Choir and District Chorus with June Taylor, and studying hard for The SAT’s. Yes indeed they were the “ HAPPY DAYS” I have been married 46 years to the love of my life ( Bob). We have three children: Robert Jr. ( an attorney ), Sandra ( a hairdresser ), and Susan ( a teacher). We have two Grandchildren ( Monica and Matthew). I fulfilled my aspirations made in high school and became a Registered Nurse. I graduated from Philadelphia General Hospital ( PGH ), in 1961, and later in my 30’s I received my BSN from Gwynedd Mercy College. I have worked many places in my nursing career: Sloan Kettering in NYC, Abington Hospital, Holy Redeemer Hospital, Warminster General Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Neshaminy Manor Nursing Home. I tried retirement 2 years ago, but had to go back, as I missed the rewards of caring for others. I feel we all must have a purpose in life! I work part time for a large Family Practice, ( BuxMont Medical). My husband is an artist and I do calligraphy, we both love to ski and can be seen on the slopes of Vermont and . See you all on October 25th!

Life has been a great ride so far. After having married “young” and producing three terrific kids and divorcing my first husband, I moved on to the next chapter of my life, moving to Gaithersburg, MD to marry Oscar Hartman, the father of three wonderful children as well. We just celebrated our 26th anniversary, and are the proud grandparents of eleven grandchildren. This October we returned to Philly to be closer to our family. After high school, I attended Penn for three years, finished with a degree in education at Temple later on, and capped this off with a Masters in Education from Penn. I taught elementary school in Abington before moving to Maryland. My teaching career continued for 22 more years in MD. After moving to MD, I became interested in oil painting and sculpture and have pursued this avocation until the present. Currently, I am connected to the Main Line Art Center where I take painting classes on a regular basis. Life has been full of wonderful opportunities as I continue to march on the highway of life.

Betty (Bets) Borton Bobier 1505 –F Pershing Drive San Francisco, CA 94129 415-387-2789 [email protected]

My husband Tony and I are living in San Francisco, where we have one retail store and a manufacturing/wholesale company based here in SF. We've had the store for 30 years at Pier 39, a jumping tourist area, and it keeps one buys. (At one time we had 5 stores spread across the country from NY to Sf; we closed 4 of them). In our wholesale company we design and manufacture tabletop items and jewelry in Mexico and the Philippines, and we attend six or eight trade shows each year exhibiting our product.

We love living here in San Francisco and taking advantage of restaurants, museums, etc.

We have two daughters, one working in our company along with her husband, and the other an RN working at UC medical center here in SF. Both are married, but no grandchildren yet.

We travel when we have the chance (not too often, other than business trips here and there). We do have a house in Taxco, Mexico and try to get down there 3 or 4 times a year.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in October!

After CHS graduation in 1958, I went for a B.A. on scholarship at Middlebury College, including a junior year on a Wall Street Newspaper Fund scholarship in Geneva, Switzerland. After working a while at The Washington Post, I went to Columbia University for a master’s degree on an International Fellows Program fellowship. Beginning in 1963, I worked for 32 years in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which is the United Nations central organization for assistance to developing countries: • Served as Deputy Director for Information, Chief of Editorial and Publication Services, and Senior Policy Officer for Public Affairs. • Organized and managed in-depth global public information programs on numerous economic, social and environmental topics. • Formulated and managed development communication projects in countries of Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, in support of population, family planning and maternal-child health programs. • Produced/edited/wrote dozens of publications (including book-length), films and audio-visuals, exhibits and learning programs, including an Oscar-nominated documentary film “Journey for Survival” on drought and drinking water scarcity. . Based in New York, I undertook UN missions in 60 countries. In addition, part- time for four years I owned and ran a company that restored antique pianos (Keyboard Craftsmen Inc.) and authored articles and book chapters on the history and revival of square pianos of the 1700-1800s. In 1995, I accepted an early retirement package from UNDP, but continue as Senior Consulting Editor for specific publications on request. Leaving Manhattan, I took up full-time residence next to the bay and ocean in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., which had been a weekend haven. There I started several new endeavors -- co-chairing a community coalition for saving open space (50 acres so far); co-founding and chairing my town’s Environmental Commission; editing a UN journal on South-South cooperation; serving as town historian and board member of the local historical society; and writing the town history book for Arcadia Publishing’s “Making of America” series. In addition, I obtained a Ph.D in cultural geography at Rutgers University, with a dissertation on the Lenape (Native Americans) of coastal New Jersey, 1600-1750 My decades of UN travel did not wear out the wanderlust, and I still travel often and widely with my partner of 28 years, who is a travel editor.

After working in mainframe assembly language programming for Texas Instruments for 33+ years, I retired about two years ago. I began this most interesting and challenging career at RCA in Cherry Hill, after graduating from Ursinus College where I majored in Math.

My husband Larry, a native Texan, and I have two children. Our daughter is married and is a mechanical engineer in Dallas, and our son is a web designer in San Francisco. I'm sure we are one of few couples our age that are not grandparents yet - but we do have hope!

Since retirement I've kept very busy - especially volunteering at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, and at my church. We also have begun travelling more - to the Yucatan last fall, and our "trip of a lifetime" - a 20 day cruise to the Antarctic early this year. We love the outdoors and have enjoyed hiking in several of our beautiful national parks in Utah and Arizona. We are so thankful to be in good health - we know we are very fortunate.

My greetings and best wishes to all, Kathy

We have been blessed. Married to Anne for 27 years. We each brought two sons from our first marriage. Our Sons range in age from 38 to 45 years old. We have seven granddaughters and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn, whom we are raising and who is pictured with us.

After high school, I went to Drexel and graduated with a B.S. degree. Spent two years on active duty with the U.S. Army and then went on to a forty-three year career in the jewelry industry dealing in precious stones and metals.

The first half of my career I worked fro Keepsake Diamond Rings and then started my own wholesale company until it was sold this past January.

Anne and I are enjoying retirement, however our objectives and goals differ from most retirees. Raising a four year old is challenging but also rewarding. We are 68 years young and growing younger every day.

After the boys graduated from Duke and Cornell, Rem and I went to live in Germany for 13 years. We started two satellite radio stations, one for Europe and one for the Mideast. Now we are back in the States, living in Tulsa, OK to be near some of our grandchildren. The others live in Seatlle, WA. Life has been a true adventure.

I have been married to my husband, Steve, for 42 years. We lived in Melrose Park for 26 of those years and have been in Blue Bell for over 12. We have a daughter, Stacy, who is married and has 2 children, Aidan (3 years old) and Talia (1 ! years old). They live in Fort Collins, CO which is a fun place to visit. Our son, Jason, is married and living in Florida.

I have worked in a number of different fields (teaching, steel industry, etc.). I retired in 2005 and then took a part-time job which I enjoy.

We have traveled to many interesting places over the years but I think the most exotic and exciting was going to Africa to visit Stacy who was then in the Peace Corp. I went alone, and Stacy and I traveled for two weeks through Namibia which is in West Africa. We camped out in many isolated places with the natives and often with the animals.

I still see a number of my Cheltenham friends and somehow the years just keep passing so quickly. I can hardly believe that it will be 50 years! Where did it go?

Married May 12, 1962 – married 46 years this May. We have 3 children – Trisha, Jeff & Chris. 5 Grandchildren ranging in ages from 16 to 7. We’ve lived in Carversville for 37 years and love Bucks Co. My memories of Cheltenham are wonderful; except possibly playing the piano in front of an entire audience of people in the auditorium or giving a speech for Student Council when I was running for secretary. Too scary! We had such a good time; it’s hard to believe it was 50 yrs. ago.!

Isn’t this exciting? Fifty years ago who would ever have thought this day would come. I didn’t. To look ahead for an inkling of things to come, then look back to see what transpired. Fun, isn’t it?

Since retiring from nursing and perfusion, I’ve had so much fun. How in the world a person had time to work is a mystery to me. To arise in the morning and not know or worry what will happen, but to accept it, run with it and have fun doing it is the ultimate joy.

I forget who said that the 60’s were the youth of old age. So true. Now we have the adventure of the rest of our lives to enjoy.

After graduating from Cheltenham High School in 1958, I attended Pierce Business School for two years. After graduating from Pierce, I held several positions as an executive secretary. I married Harry in 1963 and worked until my first child, Holli Ann was born in 1967. She was followed by Joey in 1969 and Robby in 1970. I was a stay at home Mom until the early 1990's when I returned to the work force. I had several positions until I retired in 2005. Harry and I have been married for 45 years and we have 3 adult children and 3 grandchildren, Evan, age 14; Hannah, age 11, and Benjamin, age 8. I enjoy reading, playing on the computer, shopping and keeping up with friends. My fondest memories at Cheltenham would be the first student exchange trip, which was to Greeley, Colorado. We had a ball and really got to know each other. I am unable to attend the reunion, but would like to correspond through e- mail to anyone who would care to be in touch.

Among my memories of CHS was the first day of High School. It was so exciting as Ellen and I set out for the Big Building on the grounds. How grown up I felt as Mother waved and called out – “Goodbye High School!’ Among my happiest memories of CHS is working on the Cheltonian. I made friends working on the paper and felt part of a special group. I also loved walking to school. Often Ellen and I were late – of course – out of gas and had to stop for a 25 cent gallon at the station near Myers in order to make it to CHS We were just in time to be greeted by Mr. Lehman at the top steps with – I see you two are late again!! I remember the original musical play we wrote and tried to get produced but the school authorities would not let us put it on. I remember Herman Wessel who still looked out for us when we went to High School, Miss Downs, and Rudy Lea; and straight A’s with a U in Math on several report cards! How wonderful it is that we have remained friends over these 50 years. As classmates we have a special bond with each other that I think many of us do not realize. I am so happy to be a part of our special friendship. I went to Goucher from CHS and loved it. After Graduate School in Washington, DC, I stayed. I am still working in the Treasury Department, now assigned to the U.S. Mint. As a Past President and 30-year active Board Member of the Treasury Historical Association, I do history research for the Treasury Department. Still have the gift of gab!

Carol taught third grade for six years at Glenside Elementary School, taught nursery school for eleven years at Abington Presbyterian Church, and worked for another eleven years at Abington Memorial Hospital in the radiology department. Walt worked for Bell Atlantic, AT&T and Lucent Technologies for 38 years. We both retired January 1, 2000 and are now thoroughly enjoying a more care free lifestyle. We have two daughters, Debra, who lives in Spring Hill, FL, has a masters degree in social work, and Sue, who lives in Hatfield, PA, is a physical therapist. Sue is the mother of our two grandchildren – [email protected]. Currently we have visited all the continents except Antarctica. Of course we still spend two weeks each summer in Ocean City, New Jersey where old memories never seem to die. We both still love sports, but more as a spectator rather than a participant. Walt’s pleasure now comes from shooting a good round of golf rather than throwing a winning touchdown pass. Our lives have been very blessed, and we approach each new day with the thought that we don’t want to have lived just the length of our life, but want to have lived the width of it as well.

After graduating Cheltenham High School in 1958 I went on to Temple University where I earned an Associate Degree in Business with a major in Accounting. A Bachelor of Science degree was received in February, 1967.

I was working for the General Electric Company Major Appliance division in 1962 when I married Carol Rockower. In 1964 we moved to Dresher, PA where we had three great children together; two boys and then a girl. Most of my working career was in banking. I started with Continental Bank in 1970. After several mergers, Continental became MidLantic and then PNC bank. After 26 years, I retired from the banking industry as a Vice-President in charge of Financial Systems. The next ten years I worked for LifePath, Inc., a non profit company with its head quarters in Bethlehem, PA. I retired from that organization as the Corporate Director of Management Information Services. Presently, I do some computer consulting for two organizations.

Unfortunately on December 31, 2000 my wife passed away from Cancer. After the death of my wife I lived with my daughter Lynda, her husband and their three boys in Northfield, NJ, Ellicott City, MD, and Lower Gwynedd, PA until February, 2007. I am presently living on my own at The Manor at York Town in Jamison, PA. My oldest son, David, lives in Twin Rivers, NJ with his wife and their two lovely children (a boy and a girl). He is a computer engineer working in New York City. Robert, my middle child lives in Columbus, OH where he has a Law practice. Except for the death of Carol, life has been good to me and I thank G-d for every day I am allowed to live on Earth.

50 YEARS! As a child, I used to ponder the fact that in the year 2000, I’d be ‘60’ and now, here we are – 60+, alive and active.

Alan and I have been married since 1969 and are parents to 2 boys (young men, Keith and Brian) and 2 granddaughters (Hayley, age 6 and Emily, age 4). We moved to Virginia in 1971 when Alan took a job with the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At that time, I quit working (for pay) and became a full-time homemaker and volunteer; in the schools, in the community and in the church. My school volunteering led to my becoming, in the past 8 years, a paid temp in the school district administrative offices.

Our foreign travels have taken us to Budapest (partly business) and Norway (Alan’s mom’s native land). We have also done Caribbean and Alaskan cruises and made several visits to western . Now that Alan has retired, we hope to do more traveling.

50 YEARS have passed since we left Cheltenham High School. The future is still ahead of us – let’s enjoy it.

Went to Moore College of Art for fashion design, married and moved to Tappan, NY, where I opened an art gallery and my husband ran an advertising agency. Moved to Leverett, MA where my late husband and I became professional potters and started the Asparagus Valley Potters Guild (still in existence). Throughout those 40 years, we were always designing and building houses on spec or for ourselves. Still working part-time at UMass/Amherst but also enjoying golf, , biking and the benefits of living in a vibrant, five college area with my fiancé. Looking forward to seeing all of you in October!

After CHS I went away to college, many years of college. For over half my life I have been based in a town I love, Berkeley. Ethnically diverse smart people from all over the world mix, fomenting a sort of world consciousness - a sense of connection with challenges, analysis and much stimulation.

May November 4th deliver regime change to this country.

Unlike most of my classmates I have never married, been a parent or owned a home. However, I have written books, made movies and taught in universities. I enjoy a delicious creative life of intellectual and civic engagement surrounded by abundant culture and great physical beauty. Although I love home, I also love to go places. I spent the early part of this year on the Arabian peninsula, serving on a film festival jury and lecturing on American comedy. Am hoping to return in 2009; dry desert about 80 degrees during January and February feels perfect!

I would love to live 67 more years but know we are all approaching our deaths. To increase my chances of more life on earth I eat organic, work out every day and ride my bicycle. Realistically, we will all be fortunate if we can have another 20 years in which we can walk, talk, think and remember.

Meanwhile, I eagerly look forward to spending time with many classmates. I will be bringing a 1950 letter to me with individual messages penciled by my 27 fifth grade Heller School classmates. And, I will bring a copy of the Italian edition of the book I wrote with photographs by our classmate, Mary Ellen Mark. The book will be published this fall, 2008.

It seems my life has been going in circles. I am presently living in my parent’s house which my husband and I bought when my dad retired. After high school I made a grand tour of art schools on the east coast for various financial and other reasons. I attended RISD, PCA, and finally graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Graphic Arts and Illustration. (This was before computer graphics) I tried to make it as an illustrator, but had no success. After working several different jobs, I got married, moved to Wash.,D.C. and taught art in Maryland for two years. After a divorce I moved to Quebec City, married a French Canadian, worked in advertising and taught art. My first child, Martine Picard, was born. Unfortunately, this marriage didn’t work out either. I moved back to Phila. Where I worked for the Dept. of Public Assistance, and earned a Masters in Art Education at the Tyler School of Art (4th Art School). I met my present husband at the Dept. of Public assistance. We have two children, Colin and Erin. After the children were older I tried to find an art teaching position but was not successful. Perhaps it was because I had a Masters degree and three years of teaching experience. I worked as a substitute teacher and then as an educational aide for the Cheltenham School District. I ended up doing the bulletin boards at the high school. Talk about circles! I became a grandmother in 2005 when my oldest daughter, who graduated from Cheltenham had a son, Jerry. My primary concern in life is Peace. During the Viet Nam war I became involved in anti- war activities and became a Quaker. I also am involved in environmental activities, trying to save the earth so there will be something left of this beautiful planet for future generations to enjoy. I got a guitar, let my hair grow long, and joined all the other young rebels who were trying to make a better world. Now my kids call me an “old hippie”. I retired in 2006 and am trying to devote myself to my many causes.

I have a Business degree from Penn State, a Law degree from Temple University, and a graduate Law degree from New York University. After practicing law for 3 years, I went into the real estate business, specifically the apartment development and rental business, which has been very gratifying and very successful.

I am married to Diane, and I have three grown daughters, three grandsons and a teenage stepson. I enjoy mountain climbing and in the past 10 years have climbed in or on Patagonia in South America, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Colorado, New England, Washington, Alaska, and three trips to the Himalayas, including ABC on Mt. Everest.

Fifty years...... did any of us have an inkling in 1958 what 50 years would bring? I know I didn't. What an adventure! I married, raised a family, divorced, established a career, remarried, retired – am enjoying.

19 years ago I married Jon, a now retired IT executive and moved to Carversville, Bucks County. In 1999 I retired from the securities industry. Along the way we bought a condo in Stone Harbor NJ where we spend our summers. I'm an avid gardener and was quite pleased when my perennial garden was honored with an award in the annual “Bucks Beautiful” garden contest recently. Roanoke VA is home to my son Peter Wurster. We have three adult grandchildren and a delightful three year old great-granddaughter.

Steve Korman 7251 Beech Road Ambler, PA 19002 215-646-6863 [email protected]

In 1962 I married my Penn State sweetheart, Toby. Together we raised three fantastic boys (Larry, Brad and Mark). They each married wonderful women (Korin, Pam, and Kelly) and blessed us with eight grandchildren, ages ranging from 13 to 4.

Toby and I parted as dear friends after thirty years and some time later I met Jennifer. We were together for ten years when we decided to marry. We have been happily married for five years. She would kill me if I didn’t mention our “kids” – two miniature poodles, Butch and Charlie.

I have been working in the real estate business and am fortunate to work with my three sons, which makes me happy every day. I also enjoy contributing to charitable enterprises. My main interests lately are Project H.O.M.E., MANNA, and Temple University.

I look forward to catching up with my fellow CHS students to remember all of the great times we had.

Graduated from Penn State with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1963 and went on to West Virginia University for a couple more engineering degrees leaving in 1967. Went to work for Shell Oil, Marine Division in Houston, Texas and New Orleans and then back to Houston with CONOCO. My overseas assignments started in 1969 with a move to Holland with CONOCO and over the next forty years I spent about half outside the USA involved with the offshore (in the water) engineering and construction side of the oil and gas business. I’ve lived in or worked on projects in most of the active oil producing areas of the world. I have three children and one stepdaughter - courtesy of wife Anne Marie. Our children are all hard working kids that are healthy and we have a total of seven grandchildren. We’ve retired to State College, PA to enjoy the rural and educational atmosphere here – not to slight the opportunity to see Penn State sport. I’m presently on the faculty at Penn State teaching a couple of engineering courses.

Looking forward to seeing familiar (old?) faces at our 50th. A milestone! Our old school is no longer standing, but my memories are still there.

I am married to Judy Korman (CHS 1963) and have 3 children (Mark, Liz and Ben) and 2 grandchildren (Jordan 6 and Max 2). I attended Cornell University –with CHS classmates Dick Stern, Joe Meyer, Cal Simon, Roz Skversky and Ellen Eisenberg Beitel and graduated from U of Penn Dental School in 1964 following in the footsteps of my father and grandfather. I spent 2 years in the Air Force and then practiced dentistry for 40 years in center city Philadelphia before retiring in 2003. I enjoy tennis, golf and skiing outdoors and photography and genealogy for my other activities - besides time with my wife, kids and grandkids.

I enjoyed working with the committee in planning this wonderful occasion! I wish everyone well!!

Since leaving Amherst College (my alma mater, where I had gone to teach for a few years after getting my doctorate at Harvard), I’ve been on the faculty at the Camden camps of Rutgers University. I still teach there full time and intend to do so through the end of the academic year 2010- 2011. The enclosed picture shows me in my office, holding a copy of my latest book: Cities and the Making of Modern Europe, 1750-1914 (published in November by Cambridge University Press). I coauthored it with my wife, Lynn Hollen Lees, a fellow historian who teaches at Penn.

Lynn and I have lived in University City in West Philadelphia since 1974. We raised two children there. Our son lives in London, where he and his wife are raising two young daughters. Our daughter lives in Maui. Fortunately, Edward and Laura (and our grand- daughters) both spend a lot of time with us at a summer house we have in Massachusetts.

Shortly before getting the invitation to our reunion, I had been thinking about the education we got at CHS. I had pulled some papers I had written when I was a senior, and was surprised at how good they were – certainly in comparison with most of the papers by college students I read now. The point of my saying this is not to pat myself on the back. We were all held, I think, to higher standards than high school students are held no, at least when it comes to writing. I learned to write because good teachers kept prodding me to do better. I recall in particular my Latin teacher, Juanita Downes, who also taught a journalism class. Early in the course, Miss Downes asked me to write an article of about 250 words. When she returned it to me, she had shown with her red pen how I could have said everything I meant to say in only abut 150 words. She really taught me a lesson about producing clear, concise prose. It’s a lesson that stayed with me. We had other terrific teachers too. I remember especially Meg Jones and Manny Kramer. I’m sure each of you can also remember men and women who had significant impact on you.

I look forward to seeing all of you and to exchanging more memories in October.

Greetings fellow members of CHS ’58.

After graduation, I continued on in the carpentry field. I worked as a union carpenter until I retired in 1995. In 1960 I married fellow classmate, Carol Walton whom I asked for a date following graduation at the Green Arrow (do you remember that hang-out?) We had two children – Donna and Michael. Both Donna and Michael were special needs children. They were diagnosed as Cohen Syndrome. Michael died in 2002. He was my best buddy. Donna lives in a group home that we founded in Gilbertsville, PA I keep busy with my hobby of antique cars. I have three antique cars and enjoy going to car shows, car runs, etc. My cars are a ’41 Cadillac Sedan, a ’60 Cadillac Convertible and a ’69 Dodge Charger which was bought new by Carol’s father. Carol and I also enjoy traveling

I have been married 46 years to Lou Silverman. We have two daughters and four grandchildren, one boy and three girls. They range in age from 8 to 4. I was a stay at home mom until our children were out of college. Then I owned a retail business for 8 years and found it rewarding and successful.

My husband was in the pharmaceutical industry and as he climbed the corporate ladder we moved to various parts of the country. In 1987 he started his own company which took us to San Diego by choice. He is now semi retired and we spend our time with the family and our friends. We also do a lot of traveling.

Looking forward to seeing my fellow classmates in the new yearbook.

Since graduating from Cheltenham High School in 1958: • I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 with a BFA. • I graduated from the Annenberg School for Communications in 1964 with an MA. • In 1963, I fell in love with photography and decided to become a photographer. • In 1964, I had a Fulbright scholarship to photograph in Turkey. • In 1966, I moved to New York City and started to freelance for magazines. I still live in New York City and also share a studio with my husband a few blocks from our loft. • In 1981, I married Martin Bell, a filmmaker. We often work together. We did a project on street children in Seattle. Martin made a film about these kids called “Streetwise.” It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1985. • I have received several awards and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. • I have published 18 books on varied subjects: from prostitutes in Bombay, to Indian Circuses, to twins, to retrospective books, etc. • I teach and lecture about photography in schools and universities throughout the world. I’ve taught a workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico twice a year for the past 14 years. • I have exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world, including an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1999. My work is in several collections throughout the world. • I continue to work commercially, for magazines, and on film sets. • My 19th book coming out this fall. It’s called “Seen Behind the Scene”. They are photographs taken behind the scenes on film sets. Several great people in film, such as Mike Nichols, Francis Ford Coppola, and Helen Mirren have written essays for the book about life behind the scenes on film sets. It will be published by Phaidon. • I am currently working on a project (a book of my photographs and a film by Martin) on the very American ritual of the prom. For the past three years we’ve been traveling across the country documenting the prom. I’ve done this with the 20x24 Polaroid camera. What makes this book very special is that they’ve discontinued making the film, so this was my last chance to work with this extraordinary camera. One of the proms I photographed was Cheltenham High School’s. The school has changed a lot since we were there. It was a great experience and brought back lots of wonderful memories.

CHS class of 1958-Strange clan update Carol Martin Strange and H Lawrence Strange

Carol and Larry graduated from Cheltenham, graduated from The University of Delaware (Medical Technologist) and East Stroudsburg (Biology) and immediately got married. He taught in Cherry Hill NJ, Abington PA, achieved some advanced degrees and set up the program in Marine Biology at Montgomery County Community College. She completed her internship at Abington Hospital and was employed by the Division of Pathology there for forty years. College teaching allowed long summers off and we opened up a summer business, Discovery Seashell Museum in Ocean City NJ. We had three children, Larry Jr., Mary Beth and Bill. The years flew by! After twenty-five years of teaching Larry decided to make his avocation, selling seashells, his vocation, and purchased a business on Sanibel Island Florida. The seashell business was a wonderful reason to travel worldwide (50 countries) and living between three homes was challenging and fun. Young Larry went with Microsoft in its infancy, and Mary Beth and Bill seized the opportunity to put their business degrees to work on Sanibel Island. Our storefront was joined by the internet business seashells.com and has been a fun challenge. Our three children blessed us with seven grandchildren who love to swim and collect shells. Living in paradise is wonderful and we still gather seashells when we walk on the beach. We are eagerly anticipating our 50th reunion from CHS!

Unbelievable! Fifty years and it seems like it was yesterday. Upon graduation from CHS, I earned a BS in Education from Millersville State College in Guidance and Counseling from Trenton State College. I taught/counseled for thirty-four years in the Centennial School District, Bucks County. I have two children, David 34 and Danielle 30. My wife, Jan, and I have been married for twenty-seven years. For almost twenty-five years our hobby was showing and breeding Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. In 2005, we retired to The Villages, Florida to pursue our current hobby, “Fun in the Sun”, especially golf and softball. It will be great to see “old friends” again.

THE FACTS: Princeton University A.B. 1962; University of PA School of Medicine M.D. 1966. Married to Terry (nee Margolis); Abington Friends 1961; Goucher College A.B.1965. Children: Ian (born 1971) and Andrew (born 1974)

PROFESSIONAL: Emeritus Director, Division of Cardiology, Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland, PA. Clinical Professor of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine.

MY LIFE (UNTIL NOW): Spent 4 wonderful and formative years at Princeton, then 4 wonderful and (more) formative years at Penn Med. I did my Internal Medicine internship, residency, and Cardiology Fellowship at Penn, with a 2 year hiatus in the Air Force (1968-70). I was stationed at Andrews AFB in D.C., and saw many of the Vietnam casualties on their return to the U.S.

I joined the Division of Cardiology at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in 1973, originally as the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and was appointed Division Director in 1981. During my 24 years in that role, we expanded the cardiac services, culminating in the development of a very successful program in cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology. In addition to my administrative responsibilities and caring for patients, I have been actively involved in the training of medical students and residents, which has been a wonderful and fulfilling aspect of my professional life.

Terry and I have been happily married (a blessing) for 43 years. We have shared the joy of raising Ian and Andrew, who are very special and accomplished young men. We have traveled to many wonderful places in North America and Europe, and we visit Bermuda with the family every June.

Over the past 50 years (gasp!): I have gained less than 10 pounds, have gotten grayer and wiser, and have become an accomplished cook and photographer. I believe I have learned what it means to be a good and caring physician, husband and father.

In the years ahead: I look forward to working less; spending more time with Terry and the family; traveling more; becoming fluent in French (or Italian); and continuing to grow intellectually and personally.

Frances and I say “Hey Ya All” from down in the southern heartland in a place called Peachtree Corners, Georgia. That happens to be a near community to Atlanta where my wonderful career with the IBM Company finally placed us. Though I retired from IBM in 1992 I have not had one day of “real retirement” since then. The day after I retired we started an E-Learning company called The Quality Group (Google them if you like) as an IBM Business Partner. As if entrepreneurship was not enough to keep me busy, in 1996 I was asked to run for the Georgia House of Representatives. Miraculously we won and I will begin serving my seventh term this coming January.

My late wife Ann and I had thirty seven great years of marriage and produced three children who now have given us seven grandchildren. In 2001 Frances and I, through the grace of providence and a little matchmaking by a good friend and fellow House member, became a new family. That added another son, daughter in law and three more grandchildren for a total of ten. Money is short around Christmas time.

My memories of CHS are untarnished by the years. Certainly, if asked if there was one person in my life that gave me my best opportunity to achieve some success, it would have to be Joe Nejman. Both our classmate and now departed Phil Simpkins and I truly owe a great debt to Coach Nejman. He not only showed us how to play football but he took a personal interest in our welfare to the point that it was the Coach who made sure that we went to Temple on scholarships. Isn’t it terrific how God places people into your lives at just the right time?

We are looking forward to seeing Ya All in October. I sure hope they have the Georgia – LSU game on somewhere up there.

The last 50 years have been a wonderful and continuing journey. Wow! College, marriage, graduate school, birth on son Richard, training as a group counselor/therapist, work with adolescent drug and alcohol abusers, divorce, added career as artists’ representative, new friends, new adventures, always lots and lots of tennis, always outdoor with a dog or gardening and walking, much laughter and fun, remarriage, golf, travel, tennis, private group and individual counseling career. Now retired and still walking, still out with my dog, beaches of Margate all summers (56 years), beaches of Jupiter, Florida all winter, biking all and every trail in every month, and still gardening. I have two granddaughters, 6 and 4 years old, who bring more fun into my life. I’d love to hear from old CHS friends. Summer 609-822-4414. Winter 561-747-3451. Fall & Spring 215-572-6166. Sue is the mother of our two grandchildren – Maggie – 7 and Owen – 3. Walt and I both like to read and travel.

UPDATE since the last reunion I attended; our 20th, 30 years ago.

At that time, my two daughters were teenagers and my first marriage was ended. Shortly thereafter, I met Earl Folk and we were married early in 1981. In the process I acquired 5 stepchildren and, since then, 7 step-grandchildren now ranging in age from 15 to 34. They live in the Akron, OH area.

I retired in 2002 as a principal in the East Allegheny School District (in the Pittsburgh area) after a varied career over 30 years in public education, and Earl and I moved to Jacksonville, FL in 2003. It was time for NO MORE WINTERS! Earl had retired in 1988, but we stayed north because of my professional commitments. The decision to move to Jacksonville was a “no brainer”, since my older daughter, Rachel , and her husband, Patrick Dorrian, who live in Jacksonville, were about to become parents! Cadence Marie Dorrian was born July 14, 2003 and life has never been the same for any of us!

Since then, my daughter Debbie Young, and her husband Jay Morgan have become the parents of Naia Elizabeth Morgan, born on Deb’s 39th birthday – September 16, 2004 – in Atlanta, GA. The little girls are joyful assets to our lives!

In the year between my retirement from public education and the move south, I did some consulting and was an adjunct instructor at University of Pittsburgh in the Dept. of Early Childhood Education; it was fun! So, shortly after we moved, I grabbed at the opportunity to teach at University of North Florida and at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. This led to an appointment at the college to manage a large Federal grant being done in concert with five local organizations. When the project was completed, I was hired as a full-time professor at the college, my present occupation. (…So much for “retirement”!!)

I find it hard to believe that it is 50 years since graduation from CHS. …Can we really be this old?

The 50 years have flown by. I went directly from Cheltenham to Cornell University (Economics) to Harvard Law School with some time spent in Washington DC with Kennedy’s New Frontier as a management intern. I practiced tax law in Philadelphia but spent most of my career in various aspects of law and education at the School District of Philadelphia, as Dean of the Institute of Paralegal Training, as Director of Judicial Education for Pennsylvania , as Director of the American Law Satellite Network and finally as Executive Director of the Center on Professionalism at University of Pennsylvania Law School. I have been very active in continuing legal education and life long learning. Along the way I helped to found a great independent elementary school (The Philadelphia School) and served on several civic and educational boards.

My son Tony is a professor of philosophy in Chicago and daughter Jenny is an artist and teacher in New York. I have four absolutely terrific grandchildren - those who are old enough to speak are fluent in four languages. For the past twenty years I have enjoyed part of every year in a 150 year old farmhouse in a beautiful village in Southwestern France I own in conjunction with our junior high school teacher, Rudi Lea and his wife Ruth.

I love to travel, enjoy theater, read widely and since my days on the Cheltonian I have been writing humorous essays and keeping journals which may some day find a publisher.

I have spent practically every birthday since high school celebrating with Elinor Yudin Sachse and Lynne Moskowitz Berman from our CHS class. I have been married twice and am recently separated.

Fifty years is a very long time. In 1960 I graduated from Centenary College for Women (they locked us up at 11 PM!). I then received a second Associate Degree from the School for American Craftsmen in Rochester, NY. I worked a time in jewelry and prior to my marriage to Samuel W. Salus 11 (Skip) I worked at U of P for Sylvan Eisman, MD. After Eric (age 40) was born I returned to Temple U and studied early childhood ed. After Chris (age 38) was born I taught nursery school at Carson Valley in Flourtown. When Eric started college, I worked for Mickey Langsfeld for 7 years and then worked another 7 years for a dentist in Lansdale. Skip retired from the Court of Common Pleas in Montgomery County in 2002 and we moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia. We love our new retired life. We have made many new friends and enjoy golf, tennis and bridge. Both our boys are married and we have four grandchildren – Max, Eliza, Isla and Bram. Both my parents lived well into their 90s, so I guess I have a ways to go. Looking forward to reunion.

After graduating from Penn I received a PhD in pharmacology from Downstate Medical Center and ten years later went back to school and received my MD. My last position was as Senior VP for PhRMA, the US trade association of research based companies. I have authored 16 books on clinical trials and drug development; my latest book was published this year, and I am an adjunct professor at three medical schools.

My wife, Arlene, and I have been married 41 years and for the last ten years are living in Bethesda, Maryland. We have two married children who have given us six wonderful grandchildren. My son, Adam (senior rabbi) and his wife, Rachel (cantor) are clergy at Mt. Zion temple in St. Paul, Minnesota.

One of my hobbies has been collecting antique keys (from the 2nd century BC to 1800). A highlight of this hobby was when I was invited to be the guest curator and helped put on a show of antique keys at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City.

I've lived in Syracuse, NY since '68 where I came right after grad school (Dartmouth AB, Columbia MA, Ohio State Ph.D). First taught at Syracuse Univ. and then worked as a psychologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. I "retired" in '01 as Chief Psychologist and Director of Psychology Training. I'm still working almost full time, doing private practice, consulting, and seeing vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Still on the clinical and adjunct faculties of SUNY Upstate Medical Univ. and Syracuse Univ., respectively. Author or co-author of 5 books and 40+ articles. I been fortunate to enjoy what I do, but may start to cut back. In Sept. '06 Barbara, my wife of 42 years, died. Three wonderful sons: Jeff, 43 (Ella) lives and works in Shanghai, China; Noah, 38 (Rachana), lived in India and is soon off to Pakistan after a brief stay in the States. They are expecting their first child, my first grandchild, in time for the Reunion; Neal, 38, is running Barbara's gourmet dog treat business (www.mydoggy.com), and will be moving back to Philadelphia soon.

After all these years I still consider Philadelphia "home."

Dick Stern 660 Hidden Pond Lane Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006 (215) 947-5844 [email protected]

It hardly seems like 50 years have passed since we graduated from CHS. Other than 4 years at Cornell and a short stint in the Army Reserves (partly in rural Alabama of all places), I have never left the area. I live in Huntingdon Valley and have been married to Lois for 18 years. Between us we have 5 kids (all thankfully grown). We have 7 grandchildren (but who is counting?). I am still practicing law in Jenkintown (in partnership with Marsha and Stuart’s son, Steven). Both Lois and I are passionate about golf and most vacations center around that crazy game. Mickey and I play often. It is remarkable to me how many CHS people I see over the course of a year and I marvel how close our class has been. Planning for these reunions with our core group has been fun. I know this event will be wonderful. Marsha Stillman Eisenberg Paul Brook Lane Meadowbrook, PA 19046 215-886-7055 [email protected]

I am enjoying life with my husband, Stuart, married 46 years. We have four married children: Michael, an attorney and partner with the law firm of Timoney, Knox; Carol McCullough, an attorney in partners with her father, Stuart, in the law firm of McCullough & Eisenberg, P.C.; Kathy Brady, a health care professional – Manager of the health and Wellness at Albert Einstein Health Care Network, and President of CMB Health Consulting; and Steven, an attorney and partner of our classmate, Dick Stern, in the law firm of Stern and Eisenberg. I love spending time with our twelve grandchildren.

I received my Masters in Education from Temple and Tyler. I was a partner in Gallery AartVark. I enjoy painting everything: Furniture, clothes, canvases, other wood objects, et cetera. I was a guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA), after which I became a Graduate Guide of the PMA.

At the present time, I am affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Cosmopolitan Club and the PMA.

I enjoy going to theater in New York and Philadelphia, the Ballet, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Encores! In New York and traveling, including an annual visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. My summers are spent in Longport, NJ.

I have great memories of CHS – wonderful friends and special times!

Larry Strange 915 Fitzhugh Street Sanibel, FL 33957 239-395-1479 [email protected]

We had three children, Larry Jr Mary Beth and Bill. The years flew by! After twenty five years of teaching Larry decided to make his avocation, selling seashells, his vocation, and purchased a business on Sanibel Island Florida.

Allegedly “retired” my bride of 40 years, Cindy, and I reside in Abington or at our vacation home in Wildwood Crest, NJ. I spend the rest of my time as managing partner of STAT Authentic LLC, a sports memorabilia authentication-appraisal-liquidation company, as a board member for Act II Playhouse in Ambler, as a columnist for four Montgomery Publishing Company newspapers and as an adjunct Professor of Business Communications at Chestnut Hill College. I spent most of my career in higher education where I served as an athletics director (Spring Garden and Philadelphia Textile) and coach (Ursinus and Spring Garden) and as PR director at (Ursinus, Widener and Spring Garden). I was also a member of the language arts department at Wissahickon High. I still return for Homecomings at Millersville University, did my grad work at Temple and post grad work one summer at Oxford University (England). My hobby of sports memorabilia collecting resulted in a seven-year-run as VP of sales and marketing for the Fleer Corporation, I wrote two books on the subject and spent a dozen years as sports hobby columnist for The Philadelphia Daily News. My other published book was a combination history/cook book about Ralph’s Italian Restaurant in South Philly, the oldest family owned Italian Restaurant in America. As an avocation Iwas a radio sportscaster, talk show host and deejay for four different Philadelphia radio stations (WiFi FM, WIBF FM, WBUX AM and WNPV AM) from the late 60’s through the 80’s. I was guest host of the nationally syndicated “Sports By-Line USA Collectibles Hour” 63 times and twice hosted the nationally televised Fox Network “In the Zone” program. Cindy and I raised four kids (three boys and a girl) and now enjoy their four grand daughters. We are currently raising brother-and-sister Siamese cats (aged 4), Casper and Wendy. I continue to be an avid sports collector and writer and Cindy loves art and knitting, but the Taylor’s agree that their “best times” are those spent at the shore.

Your excuse for not remembering me is valid. I arrived at CHS from Newton MA only the Monday after Thanksgiving of our senior year. That did give me the opportunity to meet several of you, and I have remained especially close to Lynne Moskowitz Berman and Caroline Miriam Simon. We celebrated countless September birthdays and New Year’s Eves over this incredible number of years.

After CHS, I spent much of the next ten years at Columbia University, earning a BA from Barnard College and an MA and a PhD in Economics from Columbia. My field was international finance, so after a few years teaching at NYU, my Briard (dog) and I moved to Washington, DC to a position at the World Bank. There I stayed for the next decade.

In the mid-70's I married Harry R. Sachse, an attorney still serving primarily Native American clients. We began our family: Michael Judah, Marianna Victoria and a series of beautiful Briards. My economics career continued on a part-time basis, at the Bank, the Council of Economic Advisors and at the US Treasury. By the 1990's, my interest in economics continued in volunteer work; I seemed to become treasurer of any non-profit organization I joined.

By now, both our children have married terrific people: Michael married Erin Segal, whom he saw their first day at Amherst, in 2003; he did law at Harvard, she social- work at Columbia; they now live in Brooklyn and are parents of Nora, our first grand- child, and Lucy, first grand-dog. Marianna married Nathan Arbitman in May 2007; they met at Michigan where both were doing double Master’s - she in public health and social work, he in business and environmental studies; they live in Philadelphia with Bailey, our newest grand-dog.

I remain very active as a Barnard College alumna; on the financial side, of course, in our synagogue, and have bred ten litters so far of fine Briards. I continue to design and revise in our house and garden. But my primary outside-the-home interests turned to photography in the late ‘90's - which I now do almost as obsessively as Lynne Berman does pottery. I’ve traveled to Ireland, Venice and Morocco strictly for photography, and take time for serious shooting where ever else I go in the US or abroad. Lynne and I have done joint shows in our homes. I’ve had solo shows here in Washington. My web-site offers a fair selection of what I do, so take a look.
