Cover Art Psalms of Joy and Sorrow A MESSAGE FROM THE MILKEN ARCHIVE FOUNDER Dispersed over the centuries to all corners of the earth, the Jewish people absorbed elements of its host cultures while, miraculously, maintaining its own. As many Jews reconnected in America, escaping persecution and seeking to take part in a visionary democratic society, their experiences found voice in their music. The sacred and secular body of work that has developed over the three centuries since Jews first arrived on these shores provides a powerful means of expressing the multilayered saga of American Jewry. While much of this music had become a vital force in American and world culture, even more music of specifically Jewish content had been created, perhaps performed, and then lost to current and future generations. Believing that there was a unique opportunity to rediscover, preserve and transmit the collective memory contained within this music, I founded the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music in 1990. The passionate collaboration of many distinguished artists, ensembles and recording producers over the past fourteen years has created a vast repository of musical resources to educate, entertain and inspire people of all faiths and cultures. The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music is a living project; one that we hope will cultivate and nourish musicians and enthusiasts of this richly varied musical repertoire. Karp: The “Hassidic Chant” of Paul Robeson 53 Performing Black-Jewish Symbiosis: The “Hassidic Chant” of Paul Robeson JONATHAN KARP* On May 9, 1958, the African American singer and political activist Paul Robeson (1898–1976) performed “The Hassidic [sic] Chant of Levi Isaac,” along with a host of spirituals and folk songs, before a devoted assembly of his fans at Carnegie Hall. The “Hassidic Chant,” as Robeson entitled it, is a version of the Kaddish (Memorial Prayer) attributed to the Hasidic rebbe (master), Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev (1740–1810), a piece also known as the “Din Toyre mit Got” (“The Lawsuit with God”). According to tradition, Levi Yizhak had composed the song spontaneously on a Rosh Hashanah as he contemplated the steadfast faith of his people in the face of their ceaseless suffering. He is said to have stood in the synagogue before the open ark where the Torah scrolls reside and issued his complaint directly to God: a gut morgn dir, riboynoy shel oylem; ikh, levi yitzhak ben sarah mi-barditchev, bin gekumen tzu dir mit a din toyre fun dayn folk yisroel. vos host-tu tzu dayn folk yisroel; un vos hos-tu zich ongezetst oyf dayn folk yisroel? A good day to Thee, Lord of the Universe! I, Levi Yitzhak, son of Sarah, from Berditchev, Bring against you a lawsuit on behalf of your People, Israel. What do you have against your People, Israel? Why have your so oppressed your People, Israel?1 After this questioning of divine justice, Levi Yitzhak proceeded to chant the Kaddish in attestation to God’s sovereignty and supremacy. -

Saminksy’s teachers at the St. Petersburg conservatory included Rimsky-Korsakov and Liadov. Fascinated with Jewish culture, Saminsky went on trips to Southern Russia and Georgia to gather Jewish folk music and ancient religious chants. In the 1910s Saminsky spent a substantial amount of time travelling giving lectures and conducting concerts. Saminsky’s travels brought him to Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Paris, and England. -

“You can’t run away from it! The melody will always appear!” Yaa Amponsah and the Rhythm at the Heart of West African Guitar A thesis submitted by Nathaniel C. Braddock in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music Tufts University August 2020 Adviser: Jeffrey Summit © 2020, Nathaniel C. Braddock Abstract The song “Yaa Amponsah” is held by Ghanaian musicians as the key to all highlife music. However, Amponsah occupies two spaces: that of a specific song with folkloric and historical origin stories, and that of a compositional form—or “Rhythm”—from which countless variations have evolved over the past century. This thesis seeks to define Amponsah as a style where certain characteristics are not always clear but are continually present and recognizable cross-nationally. Using musical analysis and ethnographic interviews with West African guitarists, I explore the movement of Amponsah across generations and national boundaries, drawing larger conclusions that have implications for understanding the transmission of cultural practice and embedded cultural memory carried within a specific musical expression. The Rhythm makes impactful appearances in the music of neighboring countries, becoming entwined with the Mami Wata myth, further complicating our understanding of ownership and origin, and bringing this song to the center of a debate regarding ownership of folkloric intellectual property and the relationship between developing nations and global capital. i Acknowledgements My journey has been supported by numerous people, and I wish now to salute their love, friendship, and guidance. Book of Remembrance Capuchin Province of St. Joseph January 1In In charity, let us remember our brother(s) (and affiliates) whose anniversary of death occurs tomorrow. Pancratius Spruck [ Pan -cray- shus Shprewk], who died at Mt. Calvary in 1886, at age 18, after four months in the Scholasticate. Pancratius came from Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in New York City. He entered the Scholasticate at Calvary and was invested into the Third Order of St. Francis. He possessed a genuine piety and was looking forward to entering the novitiate when Sister Death called him unexpectedly. Five years later, his brother entered the Order as Br. Francis, and following the death of his mother, his father also joined the Province as a Third Order Brother. Michael Albers [Al- burrs ], who died at Mt. Calvary in 1931, at age 83, after 58 years of religious life. Born in Germany, Michael came to America at age 21 and entered the novitiate at Calvary. Very hardworking, over the years and in various fariaries he served as porter, baker and gardener. He built the bakery at Mt. Calvary, and helped in the construction of the road that leads from the village to the monastery. Michael’s longest assignment was as porter at St. Joseph’s in Appleton where he remained for 30 years. At age 83, he retired to Mt. Calvary where he looked after the cemetery and spent his time in prayer for our deceased brothers. Michael was remembered as “a true Capuchin — simple and charitable.” Accursius Barthruff [a-CURSE-ee-us BAR-truff], who died at Yonkers in 1946, at age 71, after 52 years of religious life.
