As is often the case with these New Eighth Doctor Adventures, the casting for this story is excellent. Graeme Garden nails the character of Geoffrey Vantage, a not-at-all veiled parody of Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, replicating his over- the-top macho style perfectly. Max Warp much as I enjoyed Garden though, I had the most laughs from James Fleet in the role of O'Reilley - the boorish spaceship expert who suffers constant put-downs from Vantage. While I think listeners who are knowledgeable abo As is often the case with these New Eighth Doctor Adventures, the casting for this story is excellent. While I think listeners who are knowledgeable about the TV show this production parodies will probably catch more of the jokes, Morris' script is funny enough to work without that background knowledge. Fortunately in any case, there is more to the story than the parody elements as there is also an intriguing murder mystery for the Doctor and Lucie to investigate played out against a backdrop of political tension. Morris' script moves swiftly and he throws in several twists and turns to Max Warp things fresh and maintain interest. Both leads seem to be enjoying the comic moments they are given, each receiving some good lines, and it is certainly nice to have an adventure in which both the Doctor and his companion seem to be enjoying themselves at least for most of the time! A good, solid entry in this second season of adventures. It feels a little unimaginative compared to the previous story, Dead London, but it does what it sets out to do and does so pretty well. Jonathan Morris spins a diplomatic murder mystery around the apparent Max Warp of one of the presenters of a much-beloved by boys of a certain age show. And the deliberately absurd murder mystery works mainly through the brio of Sheridan Smith. Lucie seems to have lost a few IQ points in this but to excellent comic effect — Smith is easily the best timer of a comic line to appear in a Big Finish release. The story is a murder mystery based around the eponymous show for spaceship enthusiasts in an unspecified future setting. It moves along at quite a pace, although the plot itself is rather bonkers and Max Warp doesn't bear too Max Warp thinking about. When he announces that they are going to steal the painting he is positively foaming at the mouth with excitement! This episode suggests a trainspotter Doctor with a geeky notepad licking his pencil. It transpires that the works of Tardelli are obscure because the Doctor has done his utmost to find them wherever he can and destroy them! He tells us of an adventure in Rome where he discovered that Tardelli could warp the fabric of reality and he was trying to influence the Pope. When criticised for his time crafts lack of stealth making discreet landings impossible the Doctor bemoans that it is exceedingly difficult to making the rendering of space and time any quieter. He indulges in a spot of swordplay and I bet he looked strikingly Byronesque with his flowing hair and velvet jacket! With a certain crushing inevitability he always shows up.
