A Day In Stockholm Stockholm, Sweden Stockholm (1) Stockholm is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. The city is over 700 years old, and is spread across 14 islands as it faces in to Lake Mälaren and out to the Baltic Sea. You can get to just about all of Stockholm’s many wondrous sites on foot, which is the perfect way to see the city. There are also a variety of boat trips that will give you different facets of Scandinavia’s largest, and in many eyes, most beautiful city. (2) Stockholm is a major international city, which provides the great shopping, quality eateries, highest standard hotels, internationally renowned club and music scene and vibrant cultural life one would expect. Where Stockholm comes into its own however is its sheer, natural beauty. (3) Starting minutes by boat outside of the center of the city is Stockholm’s archipelago with it's over 24,000 islands. Boat trips can take you around Lake Mälaren or out into the archipelago. (2) Must see/Do NOT miss attractions Ladies Day – shopping galore in the city. With spouse or partner – Stockholm has an abundance of museums and galleries. Some of the most popular are: The Museum of Modern Art , Millesgården (close to the entrance of the island of Lidingö it is the former home of Carl Milles and is now a museum, garden and park with a beautiful view of Stockholm), The Nordic Museum , the newly opened Fotografiska , a center for contemporary photography, and The National Museum. Family Day – The island of Djurgården alone can keep you and your family busy for a few days.

  • Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016)
JUNE 22, 2016 Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016) This post may come as bad news, at least for "foodies" visiting Stockholm in July and early August. Many top tier restaurants (Michelin star, gourmet) close for a few weeks during the summer. This is mainly due to the generous Swedish vacation rules leading many top restaurants to feel that they can't offer excellent food & service with summer replacement staff. Another reason, perhaps, is that many Stockholmers leave the city during this period and there aren't enough visiting "foodies" to fill these types of restaurants to make it profitable. No businessmen in town either... wining & dining clients. At any rate, the good news is that there are a few which will be open all summer and several other top restaurants have some other options during these weeks... and you always have a plethora of other great restaurants in the city to choose from! Most of these restaurants are also closed during the big Midsummer holiday weekend (June 24th-26th). Michelin star and Bib Gourmand restaurants: • Mathias Dahlgren- closed between July 15th and August 9th (both the Dining Room and the Food Bar). • Frantzén- closes on July 9th. Reopening at a new & better location in 2017! • Oaxen Krog- open all summer as normal. • Oaxen Slip- open all summer... every day for lunch & dinner. • Gastrologik- open all summer, though their more casual Speceriet will be closed until the beginning of August for renovations. • Ekstedt- closed between July 17th and August 5th. • Esperanto- the dining room is closed between June 24th and August 5th.

  • Darkness & Light: Contemporary Nordic Photography
Darkness & Light: Contemporary Nordic Photography Essay by Anna Tellgren, Moderna Museet, Sweden 1 Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have an active and challenging photography scene. The exhibition Darkness & Light at Scandinavia House in New York in spring 2014 is a contemporary showcase featuring ten photographers who represent Nordic photographic art. We meet Tonje Bøe Birkeland (NO), who often plays the part of fictive historical characters in her enacted photographic narratives, to challenge and give new perspectives on the times we are living in. The boundary between fact and fiction is blurred also in Thora Dolven Balke’s (NO) new work, in which she continues to use various kinds of photographic mediums, such as polaroids, albums or films. JH Engström (SE) presents photographs from a series describing a life far from Stockholm, far from the big city. Joakim Eskildsen (DK) is featured with a morose picture story, American Realities, in which he portrays people and environments he came across on his travels around New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Georgia. Ulla Jokisalo (FI) often uses a cut-out technique to produce mostly one-offs, based on photography. She will present a sequence of works exploring relations, longing, and her own personal history. Bára Kristinsdóttir (IS) shows examples from her exotic series Hot Spots, which portrays the culture surrounding Iceland’s geothermally-heated greenhouses. In her film The Big Scene, Tova Mozard (SE) enacts a therapeutic talk between her mother, her grandmother, and herself, about feelings, memories, her family and the relationship to her father. Nelli Palomäki (FI) participates with a few of her monumental, incisive, and fascinating black-and-white portraits.
