Fact Sheet Greta Thunberg “I thought I couldn’t make a difference because I was so small.” Date of birth: 3rd January 2003 Nationality: Swedish Known for: Climate activism Greta Thunberg was a school child in Sweden who looked out at the world and saw things that she knew needed to change. Worried by changes to the world’s climate, Greta at first believed that she was too young to do anything. However, she could not stand by and do nothing. Less than a year after her first protest, Greta had become one of the most famous climate activists in the world, speaking to world leaders and helping to convince them that laws needed to change. Childhood Greta was born on January 3rd, 2003, in Sweden. Her mother was Malena Ernman, one of Sweden’s most celebrated opera singers. Her father was Svante Thunberg, an actor and author. She saw pictures of plastic polluting the oceans and learnt how polar bears were starving because climate change was drastically melting the ice where they lived. At the time, Greta’s classmates were concerned by this but their attention turned to other things after the lesson. Greta, however could not stop thinking about what she had seen. Greta soon became depressed about climate change. She started to worry that adults were not taking the issue seriously enough and wondered if she had a future. -

Malena Ernman Söderslättshallen 2011-04-16 …………………………………………………………... För nästan exakt ett år sen var Malena Ernman på väg från Bryssel till Trelleborg för att uppträda tillsammans med Trelleborgs Musikkår. Stjärnan drabbades då tråkigt nog av en störtförkylning och fick till Trelleborgarnas stora besvikelse ställa in sitt uppträde. Löftet att komma tillbaka infriade hon dock och i lördags stod hon så äntligen på Söderslättshallens scen. I Söderslättshallens norra delar ligger själva ishallen och i anslutning till denna ett mindre och mycket nedslitet omklädningsrum. Malena Ernman själv kallar det för sin loge, när hon bjuder in oss för en stunds konversation, efter att hon på lördagseftermiddagen avslutat repetitionen med musikkåren. På den ena långsidan hänger hennes vackra scenklänningar som inväntar kvällens show och på den andra sidan står ett enkelt bord med en fruktskål och några flaskor mineralvatten. Det är så långt ifrån glamour man kan tänka sig men Malena som annars är var vid operan i både Wien och Rom verkar ändå ha funnit sig tillrätta i det lilla kyffet. Eftersom hennes röst är lite rosslig så det blir en kort men ändå mycket trevlig pratstund. En stund som faktiskt räcker för att konstatera att det är en mycket ödmjuk artist vi har att göra med och absolut ingen operadiva. - Välkommen till Trelleborg Malena, kul att du äntligen kom till slut! - Tack, det var ju jättetråkigt att det inte blev något förra året när jag blev förkyld, men det tar vi igen nu. - Jag måste börja med att fråga dig, hur lär man sig sjunga såsom du har gjort, är det något man kan träna sig till eller måste där finnas något medfött? - Man måste naturligtvis ha det musikaliska inom sig men annars går det att träna upp ganska mycket om man börjar tidigt i åren. -

Many people believe she has achieved more for the climate than most politicians and the mass media has done in years. But Greta seems to disagree. “Nothing has changed,” she says. “The emissions continue to increase and there is no change in sight.” - Malena Ernman (Greta Thunberg’s mother) i At the age of 17, Greta Thunberg is one of the most powerful voices in the global movement addressing Earth’s climate crisis. Thunberg has successfully stepped up to create a call to action, reached a massive audience, and rallied support across multiple nations. Her activism and sudden rise to the world stage has earned her numerous honors as the youngest Time Person of the Year and two-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee. “The Greta Thunberg Effect”, as journalists have dubbed it, has compelled politicians and government officials to focus on climate change. Despite her accolades, however, Thunberg believes there remains much to do before the planet is truly safe and healthy. “Our house is still on fire,” she warned earlier this year. Going forward, how can Thunberg scale her movement to deliver substantive policy change? The Problem of Climate Change Since the mid-20th century, scientists and researchers have attributed the exponential increase in global temperature (see Exhibit 1) to an increase in human activity. -
