Motstridiga Motprestationer Motstridiga motprestationer En studie om museers finansiella möjligheter och utmaningar Angelica Ruckstuhl & Emma Schill Institutionen för ABM Uppsatser inom musei- & kulturarvsvetenskap ISSN 1651-6079 Masteruppsats, 30 högskolepoäng, 2018 nr 120 2 Författare/Author Angelica Ruckstuhl & Emma Schill Svensk titel Motstridiga motprestationer - en studie om museers finansiella möjligheter och utmaningar English Title Contradictory Compensation - a Study Concerning Museums Financial Possibilities and Challenges Handledare/Supervisor Isto Huvila Abstract Introduction This master´s thesis focuses on the financial situation in a number of museums located in Stockholm, Sweden. In particular the study focuses on external financing and sponsorship and which means that are given to meet the conditions surrounding financial support. The aim of the study is to increase the knowledge of how the financial situation for museums looks like and how the interaction between cultural and economic capital shows. Theory The theoretical framework for the study is based on the theory of cultural economics and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural / economic capital and his concept of space. The study used Bruno Freys terms Superstar Museums and the total experience. Method The main method for the study was a comparative method, but a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods were also applied in the study. Interviews were conducted with informants from a number of the museums and data from all the selected museums was collected and compared. The material also consisted of a variety of written material, mostly annual reports, but also news articles, reports and official documents. Analysis & Results The material shows a wide range of factors defining the economic situation of museums in Stockholm. A large part of the income comes from public fundings for the public museums. The private museums are more dependent on incomes from admission fees and external financing. For many of the public museums the market based rents for the building is an issue that causes economic distress. Conclusions Many museums work with sponsorships and have a positive view on external collaborations, at the same time the majority of the museums report a low revenue from sponsorships. The legal framework makes it more difficult for public museums to work with external financing and the taxation system aggravates sponsoring in museums. The free admission reform was both criticized and applauded and divided the private and public museums.

  • Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016)
JUNE 22, 2016 Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016) This post may come as bad news, at least for "foodies" visiting Stockholm in July and early August. Many top tier restaurants (Michelin star, gourmet) close for a few weeks during the summer. This is mainly due to the generous Swedish vacation rules leading many top restaurants to feel that they can't offer excellent food & service with summer replacement staff. Another reason, perhaps, is that many Stockholmers leave the city during this period and there aren't enough visiting "foodies" to fill these types of restaurants to make it profitable. No businessmen in town either... wining & dining clients. At any rate, the good news is that there are a few which will be open all summer and several other top restaurants have some other options during these weeks... and you always have a plethora of other great restaurants in the city to choose from! Most of these restaurants are also closed during the big Midsummer holiday weekend (June 24th-26th). Michelin star and Bib Gourmand restaurants: • Mathias Dahlgren- closed between July 15th and August 9th (both the Dining Room and the Food Bar). • Frantzén- closes on July 9th. Reopening at a new & better location in 2017! • Oaxen Krog- open all summer as normal. • Oaxen Slip- open all summer... every day for lunch & dinner. • Gastrologik- open all summer, though their more casual Speceriet will be closed until the beginning of August for renovations. • Ekstedt- closed between July 17th and August 5th. • Esperanto- the dining room is closed between June 24th and August 5th.

  • Darkness & Light: Contemporary Nordic Photography
Darkness & Light: Contemporary Nordic Photography Essay by Anna Tellgren, Moderna Museet, Sweden 1 Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have an active and challenging photography scene. The exhibition Darkness & Light at Scandinavia House in New York in spring 2014 is a contemporary showcase featuring ten photographers who represent Nordic photographic art. We meet Tonje Bøe Birkeland (NO), who often plays the part of fictive historical characters in her enacted photographic narratives, to challenge and give new perspectives on the times we are living in. The boundary between fact and fiction is blurred also in Thora Dolven Balke’s (NO) new work, in which she continues to use various kinds of photographic mediums, such as polaroids, albums or films. JH Engström (SE) presents photographs from a series describing a life far from Stockholm, far from the big city. Joakim Eskildsen (DK) is featured with a morose picture story, American Realities, in which he portrays people and environments he came across on his travels around New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Georgia. Ulla Jokisalo (FI) often uses a cut-out technique to produce mostly one-offs, based on photography. She will present a sequence of works exploring relations, longing, and her own personal history. Bára Kristinsdóttir (IS) shows examples from her exotic series Hot Spots, which portrays the culture surrounding Iceland’s geothermally-heated greenhouses. In her film The Big Scene, Tova Mozard (SE) enacts a therapeutic talk between her mother, her grandmother, and herself, about feelings, memories, her family and the relationship to her father. Nelli Palomäki (FI) participates with a few of her monumental, incisive, and fascinating black-and-white portraits.
