Thank you to all who attended, contributed to the programs, and shared the enthusiasm. To Robyn Sheahan-Bright and Bettina Nissen for their groundbreaking Gladstone events. To Jenni Woodroffe and the WA IBBY committee, helped by Louis Blackwell, for the wonderful quiz night—those who attended are already clamouring for a repeat! And to those who gathered for An Afternoon with Robert Ingpen, a unique chance to meet and hear from Australia’s only living recipient of a Hans Christian Andersen award. The Strathfield event served as a national get-together: Jenni travelled from Perth, Robyn from Gladstone, Belle Alderman from Canberra, and Albert Ullin from Melbourne, as well as many people from across Sydney and from rural NSW. IBBY crosses boundaries within Australia as well as internationally. I am off to Canberra this week for the CBCA National Conference, and look forward to meeting up with IBBY members there. Australian HCA nominees will feature on the program, with two as keynote speakers—Jackie French and Nadia Wheatley; with the launch of A Bird in the Hand, the retrospective exhibition of Bob Graham’s work; and with Robert Ingpen’s session about his new book. Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 and lived in Geelong where he Classics: The Art of Robert Ingpen is an exhibition of a selection attended The Geelong College. These beautifully rendered watercolour long career as an illustrator and author which resulted in over 100 drawings, created between 2004 and 2014, reveal the artistry of their published books – works such as Storm Boy (with Collin Thiele), The maker and impart the essence of those famous fictional characters Idle Bear and The Voyage of the Poppykettle. described in books that have been published in many editions and in many different languages throughout the world.

  • Hans Christian Andersen Awards Are the Highest International Distinction in Children’S Literature
    HANS CH RISTIAN A NDERSEN A WARDS Christine E. King, Iowa State University The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are the highest international distinction in children’s literature. They are given every other year to a living author and illustrator whose outstanding body of work is judged to have made a lasting contribution to literature for children and young people. The first three awards were made to authors for single works. The author’s award has been given since 1956 and the illustrator’s since 1966. They are presented by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). They have become the “Little Nobel Prize,” and their prestige has grown over the years. Selecting the award win- ners is considered by many to be IBBY’s most important activity. The nominations are made by the National Sections of IBBY, and the recipients are selected by a distinguished international jury of children’s literature specialists. The IBBY emphasizes that the Hans Christian Andersen Awards are not intended to be a national award, but an outstanding international award for chil- dren’s literature. A great effort is made to encourage the submission of candidates from all over the world, and a jury of ten experts is also selected from around the world in order to encourage a diversity of outlook and opinion. The award consists of a gold medal bearing the portrait of Hans Christian Andersen and a diploma and is presented at the opening ceremony of the IBBY Congress. The IBBY’s refereed journal Bookbird has a special Andersen Awards issue which presents all the nominees and documents the selection process.
