Wuketits (Wien) Editorial Die politische Freiheit gehört nicht zu den Dingen, die man dauerhaft besitzen kann. Sie muß ständig neu erkämpft und durch Institutionen gesichert werden. Sie verlangt Engagement und zur rechten Zeit auch Opferbereitschaft, will man nicht selber eines Tages das Opfer politischer Gewalt sein. Freies Denken und rationales Handeln werden heute von drei Seiten zugleich angegriffen oder un- terminiert: auf der materiellen Ebene verdrängen Gewalt oder Gewaltandrohung zunehmend das rationale Ringen um Kompromisse. Auf der geistigen Ebene vergrößert sich die Schar der Relativisten und Nihilisten, die die Suche nach Wahrheit aufgegeben haben und vernünftige Argumente als Rhe- torik und Propaganda betrachten. Die Dritten im Bunde unkritischer Irrationalisten sind jene Dogma- tiker und Fundamentalisten, die sich im Besitz der Wahrheit glauben und sich seit jeher die Ohren gegen jedes bessere Argument verstopfen. Die Anhänger von Gewalt haben erreicht, daß in einigen Teilen Europas sich wieder Nationalismus und Fremdenhaß breitmachen. Die Fundamentalisten sorgen dafür, daß allenthalben neue Religio- nen und Okkultismus Zulauf finden. Die postmodernen Nihilisten liefern diktatorischen Systemen die Ideen, mit denen die Forderung nach mehr Menschenrechten als eurozentrisches Vorurteil zurück- gewiesen werden können. Aufklärung und Kritik ist eine Absage an Gewalt, Fundamentalismus und Nihilismus. Sie will der "Gleich-Gültigkeit" aller Meinungen und Werte, die zur politischen Gleichgültigkeit führt, genauso entschieden entgegentreten wie dem blinden Engagement für irgendwelche Überzeugungen. Im Kleinen möchte sie demonstrieren, daß die verschiedensten Meinungen hören muß, wer die beste auswählen oder zu ganz neuen Ansichten kommen will. Daher werden hier außer Fachleuten aus Philosophie, Politik und anderen Bereichen auch die zu Worte kommen, die sich mit den Lehren der Denker kritisch auseinandersetzen und sie zu leben versuchen. Aufklärung und Kritik sieht sich einer der ältesten Traditionen der Menschheit verpflichtet – älter als Christentum und Islam –, nämlich der Tradition des kritischen Denkens, das sich bis in die Zeit der frühesten griechischen Philosophen zurückverfolgen läßt. Kritisches Denken will die Menschen dazu bringen, von sich aus jegliche Bevormundung religiöser oder säkularer Art zurückzuweisen und die Verantwortung für ihr Leben selber in die Hand zu neh- men; sich von Abhängigkeiten aller Art zu befreien; aber auch die Augen vor den eigenen Fehlern nicht zu verschließen, sondern gerade aus diesen zu lernen, wie ein besseres Leben möglich ist. Aufklärung und Kritik sind nicht Modeerscheinungen. Daher sind sie nicht an Epochen gebunden, sondern immer wieder neu zu belebende Elemente der Menschheitsgeschichte. Die Ideale einer zweieinhalbtausendjährigen Aufklärung sind zum zeitlosen Besitz der Menschheit geworden. Ihre Realisierung wird von fast allen Völkern der Welt, wenn auch nicht von deren Herrschern, ange- strebt: Freiheit, Gleichheit, Brüderlichkeit, Rechtsstaatlichkeit, Gewaltenteilung und Demokratie; der Glaube an die problemlösende Macht der Vernunft, Erziehung und Wissenschaft; der Wille zu unblu- tigen Gesellschafts- und Staatsreformen; die Kritik der Religionen, sofern sie uns bevormunden, verbunden aber mit dem Toleranzgedanken. Zu den Denkern dieser Tradition zählen unter vielen anderen Sokrates, Demokrit und Epikur genau- so wie Spinoza, Erasmus, Hume, Voltaire, Smith und Kant. Auch nach der "Aufklärung" des 18. Jahrhunderts blieb die Idee von Aufklärung und Kritik lebendig durch Bentham, Schopenhauer, Feuer- bach, Marx, Mill, Nietzsche, Dewey, Darwin, Russell, Karlheinz Deschner u.a. In unserer Zeit erfuhr sie erneut einen Aufschwung durch die Philosophen des Wiener Kreises und des kritschen Rationa- lismus, vor allem durch den österreichisch-englischen Philosophen Karl Raimund Popper. In Ecce Homo, Nietzsche described Brochard’s The Greek Skeptics as a “superb study” (1967, 243). During a course on Cicero given in the spring quarter at the University of Chicago in 1959, Strauss praised Brochard as among the greatest students of Greek philosophy prior to the First World War, and described this article as one of the rare cases in which, in his view, a problem has been properly solved. “La théorie du plaisir d’après Épicure” was first published in Journal des Savants (1904, 156-70, 205-13, 284-90), then reprinted in a collection of Brochard’s articles entitled Études de Philosophie Ancienne et de Philosophie Moderne (Paris: Vrin, 1954). It is here translated into English for the first time and reprinted by kind permission of Librairie Philosophique J. Vrin. I All those who have studied the moral philosophy of Epicu- rus with some care know that while the philosopher defines the sovereign good as pleasure, he gives to this word a very particular meaning which is not that of ordinary speech or of common opinion (Schiller 1902; cf. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Villa, June 26, 2019 – October 27, 2019 The Villa dei Papiri was a sumptuous private residence on the Bay of Naples, just outside the Roman town of Herculaneum. Deeply buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, it was rediscovered in 1750 when well diggers chanced upon its remains. Eighteenth-century excavators battled poisonous gases and underground collapses to extract elaborate floors, frescoes, and sculptures – the largest collection of statuary ever recovered from a single classical building. They also found more than one thousand carbonized papyrus book rolls, which gave the villa its modern Italian name. Because many of the scrolls contain the writings of the philosopher and poet Philodemus of Gadara, scholars believe that the villa originally belonged to his patron, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, father-in-law to Julius Caesar. The ancient villa fascinated oil magnate J. Paul Gh etty, w o decided to replicate it in Malibu, creating the Getty Villa in the early 1970s. Renewed excavations at Herculaneum in the 1990s and 2000s revealed additional parts of the building and narrowed the date of its initial construction to around 40 BC. This exhibition presents significant artifacts discovered in the 1750s, explores ongoing attempts to open and read the badly damaged papyri, and displays recent finds from the site for the first time. 1. Athenaeus, Learned Baqueters 13.588b: As for me, my catalogue of memorable sayings by courtesans has now gone on long enough, and I intend to move on to a topic of a different sort. I will begin by referring to Epicurus, who was deeply devoted to the truth; since he never received a systematic education, he congratulated people who came to philosophy the same way he did, offering remarks of the following sort (fr. 117, p. 137 Usener = 25F Long–Sedley): I congratulate you, sir, on the fact that you have developed an interest in philosophy, despite being completely uneducated. Doctor of Philosophy (English), December, 1985, 183 pp., bibliography, 299 titles. This study focuses on the praeceptor amoris, or teacher of love, as that persona appears in English poetry between 1500 and 1660. Some attention is given to the background, especially Ovid and his Art of Love. A study of the medieval praeceptor indicates that ideas of love took three main courses: a bawdy strain most evi- dent in Goliardic verse and later in the libertine poetry of Donne and the Cavaliers; a short-lived strain of mutual affection important in England principally with Spenser; and the love known as courtly love, which is traced to England through Dante and Petrarch and which is the subject of most English love poetry. In England, the praeceptor is examined according to three functions he performs: defining love, propounding a philosophy about it, and giving advice. Through examin- ing the praeceptor, poets are seen to define love according to the division between body and soul, with the tendency to return to older definitions in force since the trouba- dours. The poets as a group never agree what love is.
