Dear friends,

Welcome back to the DELO EHF Champions League 2020/21 season as the group phase enters its second half.

One of the encouraging aspects of the season so far has been the professional and sensible way the handball community have dealt amid the challenging circumstances of current pandemic.

From the European Handball Federation’s perspective, clubs, players and staff, and federations deserve huge amounts of credit for the ways in which they have conducted themselves; placing measures and following instructions to ensure matches at the highest level of handball going ahead.

As a result, the fans – the heartbeat of our game – are still able to follow their favourite teams, even if it is sadly not inside the arenas. Despite the lack of crowds, the level and entertainment value has remained at the kind of standard that we have grown accustomed to in the DELO EHF Champions League.

The fact that so few matches have been postponed is testament to the hard work carried out especially by clubs, and on behalf of everyone at the EHF, we sincerely thank you. Already the first six rounds in this season serve as proof that no favourites can take any point for granted and that any underdogs can punch above their weight. This has resulted in an unpredictable and exciting start to the competition, meaning the race to reach the next stages remain wide open.

Even in this difficult time with necessary restrictions on the events, we, together with clubs and our partners, will make sure that the DELO EHF Champions League continues to be seen, followed, heard and talked about as much as in the past years – if not even more.

FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria – Infos

2019/20 war für FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria eine Saison zum Vergessen. Die ungarische Mannschaft verfolgt immer noch ihren Traum, sich für ihr „Heimspiel“ dem DELO EHF FINAL4 zu qualifizieren, dennoch belegte man in der Hauptrunde den letzten Platz in Gruppe 1. In der neuen Saison hofft FTC auf ein besseres Abschneiden.

Fakten • Die 21. CL-Saison wurde nach dem Antrag auf ein Upgrade von der EHF European League bewilligt • Noemi Hafra wurde 2019/20 zum zweiten Mal in Folge zur besten Nachwuchsspielerin der CL gewählt • Cheftrainer Gabor Elek arbeitet mit Györ-Kollege Gabor Danyi gemeinsam als Cheftrainer der ungarischen Frauen-Nationalmannschaft zusammen • Im Gegensatz zu den heimischen Rivalen Györ und Siófok spielen derzeit nur vier Ausländer im grün-weißen Trikot von FTC und das sind die Neuzugänge Ex-Bietigheimerin Angela Malestein und das deutsche Trio Julia Behnke, Emily Bölk und Alicia Stolle.

Wichtigste Frage: Wie wird sich FTC von der enttäuschenden letzten Saison erholen? Mit dem erneuten Erreichen des DELO EHF FINAL4 als größtem Ziel startet FTC ehrgeizig in die erste Sai- son des überarbeiteten Wettbewerbs. Mannschaftskapitän Anikó Kovacsics ist sich der Herausforderungen bewusst, die auf FTC zukommen. „In diesem Sommer mussten wir ein neues Team aufbauen, weil viele neue Spieler zu uns gekommen sind.“

Im Rampenlicht: Katrin Klujber Während FTC in der vergangenen Saison Probleme hatte, unterstrich Katrin Klujber erneut ihr großes Po- tenzial. Die 21-jährige Rückraum Rechte erzielte in den 12 Spielen ihrer Mannschaft 84 Tore, darunter drei Spiele mit mehr als 10 Toren: 12 gegen Metz und 11 gegen Podravka in den Gruppenspielen und erneut 12 gegen Esbjerg.

Wie sie sich selbst einschätzen „Letztes Jahr hatten wir kein Glück mit der Auslosung, wir sind in eine schwierige Gruppe geraten und konnten schließlich nicht ins Viertelfinale“, sagt FTC-Geschäftsführer László Bognár. „Ich würde unser Team gerne auch in diesem Jahr wieder unter den besten Acht sehen. Wenn wir unser Team nach Plan auf- bauen können und ein wenig Glück haben, werden wir im Kampf um das EHF FINAL4 sein. Dies ist unser gemeinsamer Traum.“
