Foreword

Dear handball friends,

Welcome to the main round of the Women’s EHF Champions League 2018/19. Less than six weeks after France‘s triumph at EHF EURO 2018 on home court in Paris, Europe’s elite women’s handball club competition returns to the spotlight.

From 26 January to 10 March, the six weekends of the main round will determine which eight teams progress to the quarter-finals. I take this opportunity to welcome twelve sides from nine countries to the third phase of the competition.

Before we start analysing the two main round groups and their participants we should have a look back at the tournament in France last month, which underlined the prominent position of the EHF Champions League in women‘s handball. No fewer than 109 players from the European top flight took part in the event and all 12 main round teams had at least one player who took the floor in the tournament.

As many as 29 players return to the Champions League race decorated with a medal – 12 French champions, eight Russian silver medallists and nine Dutch bronze medallists. The dominance of the premier club competition in France was also underlined by the EURO All-star team which featured only two non-Champions League players.

We will all be eager to find out how the recently awarded medallists and All-star team members, including the tournament’s MVP Anna Vyakhireva, can build on their success in the national team competition with their clubs.

Their morale boost can prove to be a decisive factor for their sides in what will probably become the closest and most thrilling main round stage of the Women‘s EHF Champions League yet. While all twelve participants still have a fair chance of reaching the quarter-finals, there are at least eight teams who have what it takes to reach the season‘s finale in Budapest – the Women’s EHF FINAL4.

Two teams have yet to lose a game this season and are sitting atop the two groups. While Vyakhireva’s Rostov leads Group 1 with seven points, the defending champions Györi Audi ETO KC claim the pole position in Group 2 with a perfect record of eight points. However, none of the group leaders can take the ticket to Budapest for granted as packs of formidable contenders also eye a trip to the Hungarian capital in May.

Who will rule the final standings in Group 1 following the race between Rostov, Buducnost and Metz? Can any of the three main round newcomers – Kobenhavn, Brest or Odense reach the quarter-finals? Can the 2016 champions CSM Bucuresti endanger Györ’s position even without injured ? Will Vipers be able to return Norwegian handball back to the quarter-final picture after last season’s absence? And which of these main round regulars Krim, FTC and Thüringer HC have the best chance of breaking into the top eight this season? All these questions will be answered over the next two months.

We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have.

We look forward to working with you!

11 Group 1 preview

Group 1 preview Rostov’s ambitions and French and Danish rivalries in EHF Champions League Group 1.

Last season, Rostov reached their first ever Women’s EHF FINAL4, and now they want to emulate that success - and in the best-case scenario, end up winning the trophy.

Coach Ambros Martin knows the secret to achieving this aim, after guiding Györ to four European titles in six years. Now his ambition is to reach the same height with the Russian champions - and so far, Rostov have been doing well in the continental top flight.

In the group matches, they dropped just one point and start the main round on top of Group 1 with seven points. Team captain Anna Vyakhireva, who is currently the second-ranked scorer for the competition, was named MVP at the EHF EURO 2018 in December.

Rostov have avoided meeting heavyweights like Györ or CSM Bucuresti in the main round, yet there is a chance of facing them in the quarter-final. That means their aim will be to stay top of their group.

Their biggest rivals on paper in Group 1 are Buducnost, currently with six points. The Montenegrin team are the only side in Group 1 to have won the competition in the past, in 2012 and 2015. Last year, the rejuvenated team failed to qualify for the FINAL4, yet now they have matured, showed good performance in the group matches and hope to continue in the same way.

In the previous round, Metz finished ahead of Buducnost in Group A, but the French champions carried fewer points to the main round than their Montenegrin rivals. Metz traditionally rely on good defence, and they have the lowest number of conceded goals among all the surviving teams.

However, the French side can also shine in attack, and their goal of reaching the EHF Women’s FINAL4 for the first time ever seems more feasible than ever with eight EHF EURO 2018 winners in the roster.

For fellow French side Brest, who have three newly-crowned European champions, reaching the main round is already an achievement in only their second season at this level. In the group matches, coach Laurent Bezeau’s side impressed with their attacking style, but they have to work on their defence.

Denmark will also have a rivalry in Group 1, with both Kobenhavn and Odense having progressed to the main round in their maiden seasons in the EHF Women’s Champions League.

With three points, Kobenhavn are in a stronger position and are aiming for the quarter-final, while Odense have just one point in hand and need to improve their game if they want to achieve the same goal.

GROUP 1 Buducnost

The injury woes in the summer preparation contributed to a shaky start of the 2012 Champions League winners into the group matches as Buducnost were defeated both by Metz and Larvik. However, courtesy of a three-match winning streak in the end of the first stage the team of Dragan Adzic was able to easily clinch the main round ticket and prepare a comfortable position for the quarter- final race. Already in this season the club could rely on three significant returnees – Katarina Bulatovic, Andjela Bulatovic and Marina Rajcic, but it was mainly Djurdjina Jaukovic’s firepower, which led the attack of the Montenegrin perennial champions Club Address with 36 goals. Just before the start of the main round the club added another Budućnost Bulatovic – Nina as the late entry and also announced that from the 2019/20 Ivana Milutinovica B.B. season also Majda Mehmedovic and Jovanka Radicevic (both currently CSM 81000 Podgorica Bucuresti) will return to Podgorica. GROUP 1 Odense HC

The Champions League newcomers succeeded in their first objective of reaching the main round but at the beginning of the new phase they found themselves in a very precarious situation as they will start with only a single point on their account. Even teams with zero points sneaked through to the top eight in the past seasons and that should give Odense a lot of hope before encounters with the three top teams from Group B - Rostov, Brest and their league rivals from Kobenhavn. SAME RIVALRY, NEW CONDITIONS

Since their first ever season in the Women’s EHF Champions League, 2015/16, CSM Bucuresti have met Györ eight times, but only winning twice. Yet their first win was one for the ages, as the Romanian side left the Hungarian powerhouse shell shocked when they delivered a huge blow by winning the final of the 2015/16 season after a 7-metre shoot-out.

The two sides are leading the group, yet their fortunes look totally opposite. While Györ, the leaders with eight points, scored a record-setting 210 goals in the group phase, CSM are struggling with injuries. The Romanian side lost the top goal scorer of the competition, Cristina Neagu, due to a torn ligament in December, while right back Amanda Kurtovic suffered the same injury in November. Therefore, CSM, who is second with six points, was forced to make a last-minute transfer, by bringing in Claudia Constantinescu, a 24-year old left back who will make her debut in the European premium competition against Györ.

The Hungarian side has also boosted their chances for a new title with the transfer of the EHF EURO 2018 All-Star line player , who will surely add depth both in attack and in defence.

While Györ and CSM, who have made the Women’s FINAL 4 for the past three seasons in a row, look set to be in the quarter-finals, the race for other two berths seems as open as ever. Thüringer might be last in the group, but their young team showed grit in the games against Podravka to claim a main round berth and with Herbert Müller’s experience as a coach they can mean trouble at home.

FTC-Cargo Rail Hungaria have been hit by injuries and their young team could not cope in difficult moments and only start fifth, with two points, and they will need to step up their efforts to progress to the next round. On the other hand, Vipers Kristiansand enjoyed their first ever away wins in the European premium competition against CSM and FTC and with six players who took part in the EHF EURO 2018 for Norway, they will be a tough nut to crack on their way to their first ever quarter-final berth.

Finally, Krim Ljubljana failed to progress from the main round of the competition since the 2012/13 season, but comprehensively beat Podravka and Thüringer on their home court before being clearly beaten by Györ. If they are to break the losing streak, they surely need to stay on this form in their home court.

GROUP 2 Györi Audi ETO KC Last time the four-time Champions League winners from Györi Audi ETO KC lost in this competition was almost exactly one year ago when they opened the main round with a clear defeat at CSM Bucuresti. Since then they not only collected 15 straight victories (club record) but also claimed their fourth title last May and single-handedly triumphed in Group C in the autumn. Their goal difference of +70 goals from the six matches against Krim, Thüringer HC and Podravka spoke volume about their power and the Hungarian Club Address champions are not ready to give a quarter in the main round either. Győri Audi ETO KC In their first season after Ambros Martin left the club, Györ reached out for Crina Kiskutliget Pintea. The towering Romanian, who arrived from Paris 92, will not only be the 9027 Győr tallest player in the competition but is also a recently crowned best line player of Hungary the EHF EURO 2018. GROUP 2 CSM Bucuresti

The main question ahead of the main round for the CSM Bucuresti is how will the team cope with the absence of their biggest star Cristina Neagu. At the EHF EURO 2018 in France the leading top scorer of the current Champions League season first broke the all-time record for total goals scored only to suffer a serious knee injury in the last main round match against Hungary. For the head coach Dragan Djukic, who replaced Magnus Johansson during the group matches, this is bound to be a daunting task and there will be quite a lot of Club Address expectation from Claudia Constantinescu who arrived in Bucharest as a late entry Calea Vitan no 242 in January from HC Zalau. 1st floor 3rd District Even without Neagu a clear progress to the quarter-finals is certainly expected 031295 Bucharest from the ambitious club’s management. The group matches in 2018/19 season were certainly a step in a right direction as the perennial Slovenian champions lost only both games against the defending champions from Györ and dropped two more points in the away draws at Podravka and Thüringer HC respectively. They will start the main round with four points and the outlook for the quarter- Club Address finals seem quite optimistic. Ahead of the new phase Krim bolstered the squad by RK Krim Mercator Lea Krajnc who returned to Slovenia from Turkey. Center Stožice Vojkova Cesta 100 1000 Ljubljana Slovenia

75 FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria

GROUP 2 FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria said goodbye to the Women’s EHF Champions League last season at the quarter-final stage after losing to Russian side Rostov-Don, and then missed out on the Hungarian league title after scoring just one goal less than rivals Györi Audi ETO KC in the last round. With key players not available this season, FTC may have to wait another year for a breakthrough into the mega event in the Hungarian capital. They enter the main round with just two points and it remains to be seen whether Club Address this will be a sufficiant starting point for a return to the quarter-finals. Their key FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria players, however, enjoyed a rather successful tournament at the EHF EURO 2018 Kobanyai ut 47/a. with the rising star of Ferencvaros Noemi Hafra claiming the best left back award in 1101 Budapest the All-star team vote.
