We will meet again in August for our annual banyan, more on that later. I would like to thank the secretary for all the great speakers he lined up for out general meetings, BZ for that Andy. We just received word that Admiral Baines has agreed to become our new Honorary President, so we will be issuing an invite for him and his staff for our 2019 Battle of the Atlantic mess dinner. So everybody have a safe and happy summer. Yours’ Aye S/M Ivan Foote President HONORARY PRESIDENT Rear-Admiral Craig Baines, MSC, CD Rear-Admiral Craig Baines enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces Regular Officer Training Program in 1987. After completing initial naval training, he served as a Bridge Watchkeeping Officer in HMCS SAGUENAY and Deck Officer in HMCS THUNDER. In 1991, he completed the Destroyer Navigation Officer course and was employed as Navigation Officer in HMC Ships CHIGNECTO and ANNAPOLIS. He graduated from the Maritime Advanced Navigation Officer Course in 1992 and was employed as the Navigation Officer of HMCS PROVIDER. Following the year-long Operations Room Officer course, he served as Operations Officer in HMCS REGINA and Combat Officer in HMCS WINNIPEG Returning to sea in 2004, he served as Executive Officer in HMCS CALGARY. In 2007, he was appointed Commanding Officer of HMCS WINNIPEG where he received the Meritorious Service Cross for his leadership during WINNIPEG's counter-piracy mission off the Horn of Africa. -

In this small volume are recorded some of the more interesting of the nautical customs and traditions - their origin, development and present form. It is hoped that this book will in some way help to check the present tendency noted in civilian circles and in the press to condemn our alleged unswerving allegiance to "the traditions of Nelson's day". A custom that has no apparent basis is quite meaningless and therefore must be reluctantly observed. If these pages should serve to enlighten, to make at least some of the naval customs and traditions meaningful, they will amply have served their purpose. In the Queen's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions is an order that "...every officer...shall... in all respects conform himself to the established customs and practices of Her Majesty's Service at Sea". -

Newsletter of the Naval Wargames Society No. 228 – OCTOBER 2013 EDITORIAL It is 5 years since the collapse of Lehman Brothers Bank seen by many as the event that marked the start of a World recession. In the current and continuing financial climate, just what can Britain afford regarding the size and capability of the Royal Navy? Obviously the RN does not have the Empire to police and no one would suggest that Great Britain should have a “Pacific Fleet”. But there are many trouble spots around the World and the Royal Navy is tasked by the Government with varied jobs with fewer and fewer Ships. Judging by the turn out for the Australian Navy’s centenary and the recent International Festival of the Sea weekends in the UK, the public appear to have a lot of support for the Services. Included below in this edition of AGB are some details of what the Royal Navy does around the World. I am sure that most members of the general public are unaware of most of it. Politicians and the tax payer have to decide what role the RN and the other armed services are to perform and adequately fund the services to carry out that role. Well that’s the rant over. Fortunately the cost of Ship Models is within reach of enthusiasts. Glossary of autical Terms A Above board On or above the deck, in plain view, not hiding anything. Above-water hull The hull section of a vessel above the waterline, the visible part of a ship. Also, topsides. Act of Pardon or Act of Grace A letter from a state or power authorising action by a privateer. Also see Letter of marque. Abaft Toward the stern, relative to some object ("abaft the fore hatch"). Abaft the beam Further aft than the beam: a relative bearing of greater than 90 degrees from the bow: "two points abaft the port beam". Abandon ship! An imperative to leave the vessel immediately, usually in the face of some imminent danger. It is an order issued by the Master or a delegated person in command. It is usually the last resort after all other mitigating actions have failed. Abeam On the beam , a relative bearing at right angles to the centerline of the ship's keel. "Abel Brown" A sea shanty (song) about a young sailor trying to sleep with a maiden. [1] Aboard On or in a vessel (see also "close aboard"). Absentee pennant Special pennant flown to indicate absence of commanding officer, admiral, his chief of staff, or officer whose flag is flying (division, squadron, or flotilla commander). Absolute bearing The bearing of an object in relation to north. Either true bearing , using the geographical or true north, or magnetic bearing , using magnetic north. See also "bearing" and "relative bearing". Accommodation ladder A portable flight of steps down a ship's side. Accommodation ship (or accommodation hulk) A ship or hulk used as housing, generally when there is a lack of quarters available ashore. -

HMS Warrior (1953)
HMS Warrior (1953) HMS Warrior was built by Harland & Wolff, she was laid down on 12th December 1942 and launched 20th May 1944. She was finally completed on 24th January 1946. For two years (1946 - 1948) she was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy and not commissioned into the Royal Navy until November 1948. She acted as the headquarters ship for the atom bomb tests on Malden Island but was sold to Argentina as ARA Independencia in 1958. Commissioned 26th January 1959, she was in service with them till stricken from Argentinean Navy list in 1971 when she was scrapped.
