Gaines is concerned about the fact that vJhitney Christmas [Myra's grandson] has retained asks Wilder to discover what Timms is up to and warns Wilder to be on Mr. Timms. Gaines his "guard as to his [Timms] operations." Of interest is Gaines' question, "Is there anything in his language or actions so far as you are informed which indicates a wish or intention to everything to the Christmas heirs by treating William Whitney's try to give children as illegitimate on pretended ground of the invalidity of his divorce from his first wife. 11 Letter includes reference claim as heir to Myra Clark Gaines. --[Incomplete] brief by Wilder of a suit to be filed by Wilder against the U.S. government for damages caused by US calvary to a plantation in Lafourche parish owned by John Williams and leased by l>Jilder. Wilder claimed that on July 9, 1844, the 2nd Maine cavalry forcibly entered the plantation and camped upon the grounds. The cavalry remained three ,~eeks and ,~as eventuallly relieved by the 16th Indiana mounted infantry and two regiments of men. These troops tore down and destroyed the fences, crops, flooring, and weatherboarding of the sugar house and took possession of negro cabins and destroyed the insides of these cabins. Ca. 1844.
