The Mini-Project: Exploring a type of Satire and a Satirical Article

We have just begun our study of satire as our final unit in the first semester of AP Language. To help you learn more about the topic, you are going to create a mini-project in Google Slides to focus on a certain type of satire using a video clip as well as examining a satirical article.

Directions: There are fifteen groups, so please divide yourselves into groups of 2 to 3 people to cover one of the types of satire. You will have 90 minutes in the library in two 45 minute blocks to create your project.

You will sign up to participate in one of the following groups: verbal , situational irony, dramatic irony, analogy, oxymoron, sarcasm, hyperbole / exaggeration, understatement, juxtaposition, parody/spoofing, burlesque, double entendres/pun, anachronism, antithesis, anticlimax

 Project work dates: 11/22 and 12/3 (half of class each day)  Satire Google Slides presentations (shared with me before class) & print off of slides (three to six slides per page) is due on 12/5.

Part 1: Exploring your type of satire through Google Slides and a video clip

1) Review your power points notes to refresh your memory for the type of satire that you will be presenting to the class.

2) Each person in the group needs to find a video clip that represents your type of satire. Use Youtube or some other site to find clips to look through.

Tips for choosing clips: 1) Even though this is comedy, your clips must be appropriate for the classroom. No nudity can be shown. No excessive swearing in the film clips. 2) Clips need to be shorter than 3 minutes each.

3) Next, your group will create a short power point through Google Slides so that every group member can work on the project at the same time.

Each group member will be responsible for at least three slides that will contain the following information:

1) Slide #1: Before you show the video clip, be sure to give the background to the story if we need it to understand the context of the clip.

2) Slide #2: Create a hyperlink for your video clip on this slide so that the video will or connect with Youtube when you click on it. Include a picture of the video clip or topic.

3) Slide #3: On this slide, you must explain in depth how the clip reflects the type of satire that you are teaching the class about (even if it is obvious). You might want to create two slides for this information.

Part 2: Analyzing Satirical Article

1) The second part of the project is analyzing a satirical article. Each group will pick a different article.

2) First, include a brief summary of the article in 4 – 5 sentences so that your gets the general idea of the content of article.

3) Next, you will essentially be writing a precis for the analysis.

a. Remember that the precis is essentially four sentences or four parts. b. Include two embedded quotes c. Use one slide per sentence or part (so you will have at least four slides for the analysis) d. As you analyze your article for the precis, consider the following questions to help get you started:  What are the underlying assumptions or unwritten attitudes in the piece?  What foolish, flawed, or wrong human or aspect of society is being made fun of?  What is the goal or purpose of the satire? (How does the satirist wish society, the individual, the body politic, or an institution to change or amend itself)?  Why is satire appropriate for the subject matter? In what ways do the author’s humor and techniques sweeten the criticism to make it acceptable to its target audience?  What methods/techniques (rhetorical devices, , syntax, types of humor) does the author employ to create the satire?

Part 3: Presentation and Items due

1) Print off a copy of the slides (with three to six slides per page). a. You may need to first save as a power point presentation in order to print three to six slides per page. b. You may want more than one group member to print off a copy of slides just in case someone is absent on project due date.

2) Share your project with me via e-mail prior to the due date.

3) Overall, your presentation should demonstrate what you have learned about satire and public speaking. This isn’t a formal presentation, but appropriate behavior and speaking volume and pace will be graded.

 Each group member will receive an individual grade on the following 45 point rubric:

Slide #1 contains all information needed 10 / 7.5 / 5 / 2.5 /0 Slide #2 contains all information needed/ video clip is appropriate clip fits in with subgenre 10 / 7.5 / 5 / 2.5 /0 Slide #3 contains all information needed 10 / 7.5 / 5 / 2.5 /0 Slides are free of grammatical errors 5 / 4 / 3 / 2 /1 Speaking – appropriate pace & enthusiasm, appropriate presentation behavior 10 / 7.5 / 5 / 2.5 /0
