The riots at the gay pub, the Stonewall Inn, on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, Pádraig Rice, Coordinator Gay Project Cork. New York, were sparked by one too many instances of harassment by the police, who were a relentless presence of persecution towards the LGBT community. This was a significant event in the struggle for equality for LGBT people both in the USA and the whole world, because it ultimately led to the inclusion of sexual orientation as a protected category in the civil and human rights movements. The project has now come to the end of its fourth year, and we are delighted to see the great benefits it has produced for pupils, their families, their teachers and the Cork city communities in which they live and work. The schools in the project have achieved very positive results: by setting and meeting challenging targets they have greatly enhanced the educational experience of their pupils. As a way of fulfilling its community mission, UCC, through the Bridging the Gap project, has worked in partnership with schools and community groups to provide new and enhanced learning opportunities for children and their parents. This evaluation report summarises what was achieved during the past year by Bridging the Gap. In the year when Cork was the European Capital of Culture, over two thousand participants in the project have shown great energy, enthusiasm and creativity as they enjoyed a huge variety of events and activities sponsored by Bridging the Gap.

He was Lord Mayor of Cork when he was captured by British authorities at the City Hallfor alleged sedition through his activities with the Irish Volunteers and Sinn Féin. Handwritten notes of his inaugural speech which he had delivered eight days after his predecessor and friend, Tomás Mac Curtin, had been shot by British police were used as evidence against him, its most quoted line being; “This contest of ours is not on our side a rivalry of vengeance, but one of endurance-it is not those who can inflict the most but those who can endure the most who will triumph”1 Political and Religious Philosophy Mac Swiney was a poet and published playwright, an Irish language scholar, and a teacher.
