Volume 24, Number 14 July 22, 196543 Toronto British American Oil Company's Musical Showcase, a half-hour weekly television quiz - and -music program, goes national August 1. Twenty-two Western -Canadian stations are being added to the 31 -strong eastern roster. Other switches, to more elaborate production and all -live prize displays instead of graph- ics, will follow. So will a change to a paid quiz panel. (B-A wants more money fed into customer prizes - less to the on -air panel participants). The oil company's April dealer letter is reported to credit Showcase with pulling close to a million mail entries and in- creasing the rate of B -A credit card applica- tions by 300 per cent since first airing March 28. In the photo (1. to r.) are: Phil Lauson, Foster Advertising (Montreal); Jack Neuss, retail programs director for B -A (and creator of Showcase); George LaFlêche, emcee and singing star; Denny Vaughn, musical director; Peter Lussier, director -producer, and Bob McNicol, Foster Advertising (Toronto). This is baseball? That's what CFCB Radio in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, and the local CBC Radio employees seem to think. At least they recently played a three -inning grudge match in their outlandish outfits and called it softball - even agreed on a 2-2 tie score once the shenanigans were over. It was all in a good cause - for the local Royal Canadian Legion. Price of admission to the game was set at one forget-me-not (the flower of remem- brance) per customer. Evidently the Legion's `lower sales were helped considerably.

  • John Weinzweig and the Canadian Mediascape, 1941-1948
John Weinzweig and the Canadian Mediascape, 1941-1948 by Erin Elizabeth Scheffer A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Erin Elizabeth Scheffer 2019 John Weinzweig and the Canadian Mediascape Erin Elizabeth Scheffer Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2019 Abstract This dissertation explores John Weinzweig’s incidental music for radio and film and its context in Canadian cultural life. Between 1941 and 1948, Weinzweig composed music for nearly one hundred CBC radio docudrama episodes and for four National Film Board documentaries. Weinzweig’s time at the CBC and NFB was his first large scale success as a working composer, following his graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. Weinzweig’s incidental music was publicly broadcast across Canada, and can be interpreted in light of how it represents Canada during an anxious and difficult yet significant time in the nation’s history through the Second World War and the immediate post-war era. These works, featuring new music broadcast by organizations in their infancy, helped to shape audience perceptions of a rapidly changing country. I begin by situating Weinzweig’s documentary music both temporally and philosophically. The opening chapter explores his biography, the musical context of the 1940s in Canada, and the creation of the CBC and NFB, and it closes by discussing significant themes in the works: indigeneity, northernness, dominion over the landscape, and nation and national affect. The subsequent three chapters divide Weinzweig’s docudramas and documentaries by topic: World War Two propaganda and postwar reconstruction, Canada’s north, and finally a discussion of Weinzweig’s only radio drama The Great Flood , which premiered on CBC’s ii cultural program Wednesday Night in 1948.

It has been the writer's good fortune to have been closely associated with Dr. Willan from 19H5 to his death in 1968. The text of this thesis contains a detailed biography of the composer and a theoretical analysis of thirty—one representative works chosen from the unaccom- ‘panied, accompanied, and longer works. The final chapter compares the general types of works examined and gives an estimation of the composer by leading Canadian musicians. In the appendices there is a comprehensive listing of all compositions by Healey Willan as complete as it is possible to be at this time. The harmonic analysis tabulates all sonorities, root movements, modulations, rhythms, melodic motion and contrapuntal devices in each work, ending with a summary William Edward Marwick pointing out any distinguishing features. A more extensive summary is found at the end of the three main divisions of works.

  • Native Studies Audio-Visuals and Other Media
NATIVE STUDIES JOHN A. PRICE, EDITOR NATIVE STUDIES AUDIO-VISUALS AND OTHER MEDIA This is primarily a summary of radio, television, records, audiotapes, slides, filmstrips, videotapes, and films that are easily available and appropriate for the teaching of university level courses in Native studies. There is a review of the various media forms and how they can be used in teaching. Finally there is an assessment of the importance of Native studies media in an even larger sense, including books, university courses, and home videotapes. One conclusion on the use of audio-visuals in teaching is that the teacher is advised to acquire a private collection of audiotapes, slides, and filmstrips, rather than relying heavily on videotapes and movies. This mode of operation (1) is inexpensive, (2) gives the lecturer more control over the content of the presentation and allows the lecturer to relate the course readings and discussions to the audio-visuals while they are in progress, and (3) is easier in terms of flexibility of scheduling and the set up and operation of equipment. There is a fourth reason, but it is based more on impressions than on hard facts. It seems that the new television generation of students has become so comfortable with entertainment through television and movies that they tend to shift out of an intensive learning mental pattern and into a relaxed, recreational mental pattern when you turn on the videotape or movie. They enjoy the experience but have a hard time telling you what they learned. However, with a medium such as a slide lecture there is a high level of feedback between the lecturer and the students and it seems that more learning takes place, at least the kind of learning that the student can talk about.
