OpowieÊci mojej ˝ony Tales Told by My Wife by Miros∏aw ˚u∏awski A glossed reader for the intermediate to advanced learner of Polish Edited by Oscar E. Swan A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CITY OF PRZEMYÂL The city of PrzemyÊl is situated on the San River next to the contemporary Polish-Ukrainian border, about 90 kilometers from Lwów (Lviv) in the east and from Rzeszów to the west. The oldest historical mention of PrzemyÊl is from 981. A natural passage between the Carpatians and the Sandomierz Lowlands, called the “PrzemyÊl Gate,” has for centuries connected cities in Eastern and Western Europe. PrzemyÊl’s location in a border zone between three countries caused the rulers of Poland, Ruthenia, and Hungary to try to gain control over it from the 10th century on. The town has always been inhabited by a population of many nationalities, denominations, and cultures: Poles, Ruthenians, Germans, Czechs, Armenians, and Jews. By the 17th and 18th centuries, most minorities were assimilated, leaving Poles, Ruthenians, and Jews as the dominant ethnic groups in PrzemyÊl and its surroundings. In 1772, following the first partition of Poland, PrzemyÊl was incorporated into Austria. Its development became possible again only after 1880, when the Polish territories under Austrian rule (Galicia) were allowed a significant degree of autonomy. This development was connected to the town’s strategic location near the border of the Russian Empire. A system of fortifications was expanded to make up the PrzemyÊl Fortress, one of the largest fortresses in Europe at the time. Economic recovery was also fostered by the construction of the railway line which connected Cracow to Lwów, with a branch leading to Hungary.

  • ANNA MARIA JOPEK Vocalist, Songwriter, Improviser, A
ANNA MARIA JOPEK Vocalist, songwriter, improviser, a passionate visionary. Anna Maria Jopek’s style is a fusion of improvisation, Polish traditional sounds, and European classical music. Born into an artistic family – Anna Maria’s grandmother and father were accomplished singers, she was literally raised backstage – in concert venues and in the dressing rooms of legendary Polish folk group “Mazowsze”, where her parents performed. She was only three years old when she recorded a song for the Polish Radio. At the age of seven, she began her musical education in piano class, and at the age of twelve, she performed at the Warsaw Philharmonic. Graduate of Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and student of philosophy at the Warsaw University. For years, Jopek has been writing music and adopting classical and traditional themes to exceptional, multifaceted projects that bring together the world’s most outstanding musicians such as Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Richard Bona, Oscar Castro-Neves, Makoto Ozone, Noa, Mino Cinelu and others. She also had the pleasure to sing with: Sting, Youssou N’Dour, Bobby McFerrin, Ivan Linz, Nigel Kennedy and Dianne Reeves. AMJ has performed at the world’s most renowned concert halls such as: Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Royal Festival Hall, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, Blue Note Tokyo, The Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv or Hamer Hall in Melbourne. She recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studio, Abbey Road in London and Power Station in New York. She has won every prominent Polish music award possible. In 2017 Anna released the album “Minione” (Bygone) with Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

  • Slavic Touch from the Heart of Europe but to Freely Draw on Each of Them, in the Hope of finding One of Her Own
Anna Maria Jopek - composer, arranger and singer with respectful, honorable carrier has sold one million records and collaborated with the most outstanding musicians - Pat Metheny, Bobbi Mc Ferrin, Ivan Lins, Youssou N'Dour, Makoto Ozone, Richard Bona and others. AMJ has been faithful to Polish musical tradition since her very first album and all along her solo career. As AMJ says: 'music itself has always been my prime concern. It is the great challenge to face the audience that does not understand Polish and does not know me at all. It's a lesson in humility, in sheer communication through sound. We can win, we can fail, but we have to be absolutely honest and pure when it comes to making music.' For seventeen years Anna Maria Jopek studied classical music. At the same time, at home was surrounded by traditional music, her parents being active in Poland's famous folk ensemble Mazowsze. However, AMJ decided to bestow her affection on jazz, with its wide-ranging scope, its openness to so many diverse influences, with the constant intimate dialogue between performing musicians that it entails. And finally it happened. Anna Maria Jopek Today AMJ chooses not to belong to any of these worlds, Slavic Touch from the Heart of Europe but to freely draw on each of them, in the hope of finding one of her own. ’Just thirty seconds of Anna’s tune belong to the most beautiful music I’ve heard in months’ ‘Anna is original, unique, different. She’s brace, she’s modest, she’s open. She’s a great musician.

By contrast, music which is popular but perceived as “bad” has generated surprisingly little interest. This dissertation looks at Polish post-socialist music through the lenses of musical phenomena that came to prominence after socialism collapsed but which are perceived as controversial, undesired, shameful, and even dangerous. They run the gamut from the perceived nadir of popular music to some works of the most renowned contemporary classical composers that are associated with the suffix -polo, an expression
