The main partners in Cyprus are the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Forestry Department. The path starts at Gibraltar, passes through Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, mainland Greece, the Greek island of Crete, to the island of Cyprus. In its Cyprus section, European path E4 connects Larnaka and Pafos international airports. Along the route, it traverses Troodos mountain range, Akamas peninsula and long stretches of cural areas, along regions of enhanced natural beauty and high ecological, historic, archaeological, cultural and scientific value. Few people have the time or the stamina to tackle the whole route in one go. The information given here is a general outline, to assist ramblers identify the path route. It is by no means a detailed description of all aspects of covered areas. Ramblers are strongly advised to research further any path section(s) to be attempted, with particular emphasis in the availability and proximity of overnight licensed accommodation establishments, especially in remote mountain and rural areas. It should be stressed that the route by no means represents all that Cyprus has to offer the rambler. It is primarily designed as cross- country route, and as such is inevitably selective, missing out some fine landscapes and/or cultural sites. It does however provide a sampler of the scenic and cultural variety that is Cyprus.

PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS TO THE UNITED NATIONS BZO SECOND AVENUE NEW YORK, N. Y. IOOI7 Ref: 2002/77/2 Excellency, I have the honour to refer to the decision of the President of Cyprus, Mr. Kyprianou, to visit during this month the Greek Cypriot citizens of the Republic in the occupied area of Karpass. This decision, together with a request that the necessary facilities might be provided by the United Nations, was communicated yesterday to your Special Representative, Ambassador Galindo Pohl, who undertook to communicate with the Secretary-General on the subject. Sub- sequently, Ambassador Pohl informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Mr. Denktash places conditions for such visit, to the effect that a letter by the President of the Republic should be addressed to him as President of the so-called "Turkish Federated State of Cyprus", or that a meeting between them be arranged to discuss the matter. The President has the legitimate and fundamental right to visit citizens of the Republic in any part of the territory, particularly when, as in this case, the visit is motivated purely by humanitarian reasons, having regard to the situation of the Greek Cypriot citizens in the Karpass.

1 2 3 2 3 The Island of Cyprus he Republic of Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, situated at the crossroads of the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. It is an EU country member with a long history and rich culture. Since antiquity, the island’s strategic T geographic position has played an important part in its turbulent history. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it has been conquered and dominated by many different cultures and civilisations. Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Egyptians, Romans, Franks, Venetians, Ottomans, and British, have all left behind visible traces of their passage. Christ’s apostles once walked on this island. The Mycenaean Greeks introduced their civilisation 3,500 years ago and permanently installed the island’s Hellenic roots. In antiquity, rich copper deposits put Cyprus on the world map. It is widely acclaimed that cuprum, the Latin word for copper is derived from the word Cyprus. The island is an open air museum where one can visit prehistoric settlements, classical Greek temples, Roman theatres and villas, early Christian basilicas, Byzantine era churches and monasteries, crusader castles, Gothic cathedrals, Venetian fortifications, Moslem mosques and British colonial style buildings. Cyprus enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and mild sunny winters with little rainfall. The REE pattern of the hydrother- pletely. Epidotisation phenomena include replacement of mal allanite-(Y) is characterised by LREE and Eu deple- pre-existing minerals and filling of miarolitic cavities. In tion, similar to the parent plagiogranitic magma. As allan- addition to epidote, miarolites in one plagiogranite body ite had sequestered most of the REE in the fluid, epidote (located near the village of Spilia) contain coexisting fer- took over as the principle hydrothermal mineral. Epidote in riallanite-(Ce) and allanite-(Y). Textural and geochemical Troodos plagiogranites records a fluid evolutionary trend evidence indicates that late-stage REE-enriched granitic beginning with REE-rich–Eu-depleted similar to allanite- melt facilitated crystallisation of magmatic ferriallanite- (Y) and gradually transforming into the REE-depleted– (Ce). High REE contents persisted after fluid exsolution, Eu-enriched pattern prevalent throughout ‘conventional’ sub-seafloor fluids. A comparison of allanite-bearing Electronic supplementary material The online version of this and allanite-absent plagiogranites from the same local- article (doi:10.1007/s00410-015-1114-y) contains supplementary ity suggests that REE-bearing fluids migrated from the material, which is available to authorized users.
