The Diocesan Institute, Summer Session 2013, is an opportunity for adult Catholics to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith. Courses are taught by lecturers from the Diocese of Harrisburg. The courses offered during the Summer Session allow adults to fulfill requirements for certificates offered through the Diocesan Institute for Catechetical and Pastoral Formation. Attending the seven introductory courses offered during the summer session, along with submitting a signed recommendation from one’s pastor, will lead to the awarding of the Basic Catechetical Certificate. June 17-21 A03 Christology MTWThF Rev. John Trigilio 6:30-9:30 p.m. $50.00 Christology is the branch of theology that deals with Jesus Christ, including the study of His Person, mission, and works. Topics to be addressed in this course include: the Scriptural foundations for Christology, major Christological controversies and heresies, the development of Christological approaches throughout Church history, the significance of the Incarnation and the Paschal Mystery, and a consideration of Christ’s work of salvation (Soteriology). Required course for the following certificates: Advanced Catechetical Certificate, Certificate for Coordinator of Adult Religious Education and all certificates in Pastoral Ministry. June 24-27 A01 Advanced Morality MTWTh Rev. David L. Danneker 6:30-9:30 p.m. $50.00 Prerequisite: Introduction to Morality. This course will critically examine recent developments in Moral Theology by examining the Catechism of the ALSO AVAILABLE Catholic Church and Pope John Paul II’s encyclicals Veritatis Splendor and VIA WEBINAR Evangelium Vitae. This course will include the application of moral principles to the fields of sexual ethics, social justice and medical ethics. June 3-6 A09b An Introduction to the Confessions of Saint Augustine MTWTh Brother Bruno Heisey, OSB 6:30-9:30 p.m. $40.00 This course will provide an introduction to the most famous and most personal of St. Augustine’s works. After brief lectures providing the historical context in which St. Augustine wrote the Confessions, the participants will read and discuss selected passages of this autobiography, which then Cardinal Ratzinger said would be one of his “desert island” books. Required text: 2012 Ignatius Press edition of the Confessions, edited by Fr. David Meconi and translated by Sr. Maria Boulding. This course fulfills the Church History course requirement for the Master Catechist Certificate and the Certificate for Coordinator of Adult Religious Education. This course also fulfills the Church Fathers course requirement for the Certificate for Leaders of Scripture Study. June 3-5 S01/S02 Adult Methodology I & II MTW Dr. Mary Ann Boyarski 6:30-9:30 p.m. $25.00 This course will explore adult development and learning, general principles of adult education, Church documents regarding adult faith formation and explore avenues of spiritual growth and development. Those participants desiring credit toward diocesan catechetical certification will be expected to complete two assignments, one to two pages in length. Required course for the following certificates: Certificate for Catechist of Adults and Certificate for Leaders of Scripture Study. June 4, 11, 18 S03 Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Tuesdays Faith Formation in the United States 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mr. Ryan Bolster $25.00 This course will examine the 1999 U.S. bishops’ Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us. Anyone working with Catholic adults in educational and/or formational settings would benefit from attending this course. Those participants desiring credit toward the certificate will be expected to complete a three to four page paper. Required course for the Certificate for Coordinator of Adult Religious Education. June 5, 12, 19, 26 S13 Adolescent Development and Catechesis: Youth and Young Adult Wednesdays Culture 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mr. Rob Williams $50.00 How many times have you heard from an adolescent, “I wish someone understood me?” (Maybe you remember feeling this way?) This course will help to guide you to a better understanding of who adolescents and young adults are, and the developmental needs and characteristics of both adolescents and young adults. We will explore the major shifts in their development and the cultural trends that influence and impact growth development. This will lead to a discussion on the implications that these have on ministry for, by and with adolescents and young adults.The first two sessions (June 5th and June 12th) will be available in person or via live Elluminate connection; the last two sessions (June 19th and June 26th) will be IN PERSON as students will be presenting their assignments and discussing the implications for ministry. Assignment 1: Each student will be expected to find an article in the newspaper, a magazine, on the internet about youth or young adult culture or trends. Each student will briefly introduce their article for discussion. Assignment 2: Each student will be expected to prepare an in-class presentation of youth or young adult culture and trends based on recent studies. This will likely take two to four hours outside of class to prepare. The presentations will be between 5 and 10 minutes in length. Students may work individually or as a group in preparing for this presentation. June 10-13 LIT101 Liturgical Foundations: Introduction to the Sacred Liturgy MTWTh Rev. Neil Sullivan 6:30-9:30 p.m. $40.00 This course will present a general introduction and survey of basic liturgical theology and praxis with particular attention to the Liturgical Year and the Sunday Celebration of the Eucharist. The Sacred Liturgy is the source and summit of our Christian lives. If we truly believe that how we pray reflects what we believe and calls us to a certain way of life, the study of the Liturgy is not merely learning rubrics, but gaining insight into what it means to live as the People of God. With major ecclesiastical liturgical documents as our guide and special attention to the liturgical observance of Sunday, this course will examine the major elements of the Liturgy and how the celebration of the Liturgy expresses and strengthens our Faith. This course fulfills the Liturgy and Worship course requirement for the Master Catechist Certificate. June 3,5,6 E177 Virtual Integrity MWTh Sr. Geralyn Schmidt, SCC 6:30-9:30 p.m. $25.00 One cannot open up the newspapers today without reading anything about Cyber- citizenship and the ethical use of media. This class illustrates the next step in Internet Safety: How our Catholic belief system should affect not only what media we consume and purchase, but also how we view and use the Internet. The class will focus on the Cardinal and Theological virtues and how they should assist the 21st century Catholic in decision-making about media and Internet use through the perspective of personal integrity.
