The Diocesan Institute, Summer Session 2013, is an opportunity for adult Catholics to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith. Courses are taught by lecturers from the Diocese of Harrisburg.

The courses offered during the Summer Session allow adults to fulfill requirements for certificates offered through the Diocesan Institute for Catechetical and Pastoral Formation. Attending the seven introductory courses offered during the summer session, along with submitting a signed recommendation from one’s pastor, will lead to the awarding of the Basic Catechetical Certificate.

June 3-6 A09b An Introduction to the Confessions of Augustine MTWTh Brother Bruno Heisey, OSB 6:30-9:30 p.m. $40.00 This course will provide an introduction to the most famous and most personal of St. Augustine’s works. After brief lectures providing the historical context in which St. Augustine wrote the Confessions, the participants will read and discuss selected passages of this autobiography, which then Cardinal Ratzinger said would be one of his “desert island” books.

Required text: 2012 Ignatius Press edition of the Confessions, edited by Fr. David Meconi and translated by Sr. Maria Boulding.

$25.00 This course will examine the 1999 U.S. bishops’ Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us. Anyone working with Catholic adults in educational and/or formational settings would benefit from attending this course. June 5, 12, 19, 26 S13 Adolescent Development and Catechesis: Youth and Young Adult Wednesdays Culture 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mr. Rob Williams $50.00 How many times have you heard from an adolescent, “I wish someone understood me?” (Maybe you remember feeling this way?) This course will help to guide you to a better understanding of who adolescents and young adults are, and the developmental needs and characteristics of both adolescents and young adults. We will explore the major shifts in their development and the cultural trends that influence and impact growth development. This will lead to a discussion on the implications that these have on ministry for, by and with adolescents and young adults.The first two sessions (June 5th and June 12th) will be available in person or via live Elluminate connection; the last two sessions (June 19th and June 26th) will be IN PERSON as students will be presenting their assignments and discussing the implications for ministry.

Assignment 1: Each student will be expected to find an article in the newspaper, a magazine, on the internet about youth or young adult culture or trends. Each student will briefly introduce their article for discussion. Assignment 2: Each student will be expected to prepare an in-class presentation of youth or young adult culture and trends based on recent studies. This will likely take two to four hours outside of class to prepare. The presentations will be between 5 and 10 minutes in length. Students may work individually or as a group in preparing for this presentation.

June 10-13 LIT101 Liturgical Foundations: Introduction to the Sacred Liturgy MTWTh Rev. Neil Sullivan 6:30-9:30 p.m. $40.00 This course will present a general introduction and survey of basic liturgical theology and praxis with particular attention to the Liturgical Year and the Sunday Celebration of the Eucharist. The Sacred Liturgy is the source and summit of our Christian lives. If we truly believe that how we pray reflects what we believe and calls us to a certain way of life, the study of the Liturgy is not merely learning rubrics, but gaining insight into what it means to live as the People of God. With major ecclesiastical liturgical documents as our guide and special attention to the liturgical observance of Sunday, this course will examine the major elements of the Liturgy and how the celebration of the Liturgy expresses and strengthens our Faith. This course fulfills the Liturgy and Worship course requirement for the Master Catechist Certificate.

This class illustrates the next step in Internet Safety: How our Catholic belief system should affect not only what media we consume and purchase, but also how we view and use the Internet. The class will focus on the Cardinal and Theological virtues and how they should assist the 21st century Catholic in decision-making about media and Internet use through the perspective of personal integrity.

This two-session course will take all the AVAILABLE VIA mystique out of the strange new world of social networking and explore how this REAL-TIME venue can assist in the New Evangelization which both Blessed John Paul II and WEBINAR ONLY Pope Benedict XVI have vigorously promoted. The Diocesan Institute for Catechetical and Pastoral Formation exists to provide a program of academic and pastoral formation for Catholic laity interested in service to the Church and personal enrichment. The Institute will assist laity in their life-long journey of faith formation by deepening their understanding of scripture, theology and authentic spirituality. This workshop will explain, in depth, the wonderful promises given by the Lord Jesus to St. Margaret Mary for those who practice devotion to His Sacred Heart and will explore the implications of this devotion to the Heart of Christ for our lives. An outline of the 12 promises and a catechetical explanation of them will be provided to participants. This workshop takes place during June, Month of the Sacred Heart.

What about the things you don’t know-- the things your children know and may not want you to know? When it comes to technology and its many “toys,” knowledge is power for parents who want to raise their children to be virtuous cyber-citizens. Wednesday Mr. Ryan Bolster 6:30-9:30 p.m. $15.00 In 1983 Pope John Paul II called for a “New Evangelization” (“new in its ardor, methods, and expression”), highlighting the major focus of his pontificate. Pope Benedict XVI subsequently made the task of advancing the implementation the New Evangelization his own. This session will address the essential characteristics of the New Evangelization, including practical guidance on how all Catholics can fulfill our responsibility “to repropose the perennial truth of Christ’s Gospel” (Pope Benedict XVI).

Father Frederick L. Miller, a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, was ordained in 1972. After serving in three parishes of the Archdiocese, Father was named Executive Director of the World Apostolate of Fatima, Editor of Soul Magazine, and Rector of the Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Washington, NJ. After completing his doctoral studies in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Father Miller taught at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie, NY, and the North American College in Rome. Presently, he is Chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Father Miller is known to EWTN audiences for his series on the Spirituality of St. Francis de Sales and on the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. His latest book, published by Ignatius Press, is entitled, The Grace of Ars.
