From the desk of Fr. Kyle Kowalczyk PARISH OF ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE Website: www.DelanoCatholic.com General Email: [email protected]

“Whosoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal Parish Office Phone: 763-972-2077 fire.” In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, as Parochial Administrator: Fr. Kyle Kowalczyk, ext. 222 the story goes, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, handed [email protected] him a brown woolen scapular and gave this promise to the Carmelite Order. Later, the Church extended this magnificent Deacon: Rev. Mr. Joseph Kittok, 763-221-6658 [email protected] privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the and who perpetually wear it. Deacon: Rev. Mr. Bruce Bowen, ext. 244 Good deal, right? I get to wear this little brown piece of wool 612-298-4867, [email protected] under my shirt and go straight to heaven when I die! Or… Parish Business Administrator: Russ Nolan, ext. 226 maybe there is more to it. [email protected]

Bookkeeper: Marie Bauman, ext. 223 Yes, there is more to it. The Brown Scapular is a sacramental, [email protected] which means it is an outward sign of a deeper reality. The sign of the scapular is the protection of our Mother Mary. The Director of Music: Alexa Gruber, ext. 225 [email protected] deeper reality is that she really does protect the one who wears it and calls upon her as Mother and guide. Director of Faith Formation & Marriage & Family Life: Eric Russek, ext. 251 [email protected]

It is not a magic charm. We don’t don the scapular and then Safe Environment Coordinator: Eric Russek, ext. 251 refuse to change our sinful behaviors. It’s a sign of our choice to Liturgical Administrator: Kathy Carlson, ext. 246 follow through Mary in an ever-more faithful way. Being [email protected] enrolled in the scapular is a two-way street: Mary says she will protect us from the fires of hell, and we say we are going to try RCIA Coordinator: Connie Botz , ext. 221, [email protected] to live our life entirely for her and for her son. Of course, her part is the greater part. When we don the scapular we are Bulletin Editor: Kristin Detloff, 971-280-9676, giving Mary permission to make us holy, and if we let her, she [email protected] will. We may fail at times to fulfill our promise, but she will Maintenance Supervisor: Gary Zitzloff never fail to fulfill hers. [email protected]

Cemetery Liaison : Jane Speckel, ext. 224 In other words, when we are enrolled in the Brown Scapular we [email protected] are entering into a relationship with Mary, who is our surest Parish Trustees: Jason Winter and Gary Schaust guide to Jesus. Consequently, for those who set out on this journey, one of two things will happen: They will either wear the Miscarriage Ministry: Bobi Meehan, 763-479-2604 scapular faithfully leaning on Mother Mary with confidence and ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CATHOLIC SCHOOL fidelity and so eventually reach the gates of heaven with her by Website: www.stmaxkolbeschool.org their side; or they will find such a relationship burdensome and School Phone: 763-972-2528 inconvenient to their sinful lifestyle, take off the scapular, and completely relying on self, easily reach the gates of hell alone. School Principal: Mary Ziebell, ext. 228 [email protected] Either way, the promise holds true: “Whosoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” Administrative Assistant: Dawn McCabe, ext. 229 [email protected] In honor of the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God, and in order to allow all of you to take advantage of her promise, we are St. Maximilian Kolbe Councils offering a parish-wide enrollment after the Holy Day of Obligation Masses on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1st. If you were never Pastoral Council enrolled and would like to be, please bring your own Brown Gail Sinkel, Chairperson, [email protected] Scapular and join us immediately after either of the Masses. B.J. Ludwig, Vice Chair, [email protected] Ted May, Secretary, [email protected] - Fr. Kowalczyk Additional Members: Susan Fobbe, Bob Sundheim, John Barten, Tim Burke Please contact Gail Sinkel, B.J. Ludwig or Ted May of the Pastoral Council with concerns or comments about the parish. Concerns and ideas will be discussed with Fr. Kowalczyk at the monthly

Council meeting. Finance Council Jeff Carriveau, Jason Griep, Kelly Horn, John Reuter, Bill Bandzuch To learn more about our financial health, please make an appointment with the Parish Business Administrator.

6th Graders at St. Max Kolbe Tackle the Scientific Method St. Maximilian Kolbe School’s 6th grade class practiced applying the scientific method through a series of experiments as they studied elemental relationships during their Physical and Chemical Properties unit. The focus of the four-week investigation was to determine whether or not individual elements can be positively identified through a single test or observation. Students began the process by calculating and recording the mass, volume, density, solubility, miscibility, and pH for a variety of “mystery” substances (they later learned these substances to be copper shot, aluminum powder, copper foil, chalk, and calcium carbonate). The students then tested the reactivity of the substances by placing each in beakers of water, vinegar, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and silver nitrate. The lab concluded with student groups conducting an analysis of their cumulative data to answer these questions: Is a single test or observation 100% reliable in determining the identity of elements within a substance? Can the substance itself be identified? You’ll have to ask a 6th grader to find out.

Faith Formation for All Ages

MEN OF THE PARISH We Need You

Exodus 90 is a spiritual exercise for the renewal of the Church. It's a challenging 90-day period of prayer and asceticism, supported by a fraternity of like-minded men.

How It Works: There's too much distraction, addiction, and loneliness in men today, even good Catholic men. Now more than ever, the Church needs more from her men. Here's how Exodus 90 helps:

Prayer: Closer to Jesus Christ. You will journey through the book of Exodus and commit to 20-60 minutes of silent prayer each day. Each morning you will receive a passage from scripture and a meditation to guide your prayer.

Asceticism: Self-Mastery/ We cannot say “yes” to God until we have said “no” to the world and its comforts. During Exodus 90, you will return to the Church’s ancient (and largely lost) tradition of asceticism.

Fraternity: A Small Group. You’ll invite other men from your community to journey with you. You will meet at least one time each week for an in-person fraternity meeting. The simple structure allows for prayer, accountability, and mutual encouragement.

90 Days: A Concrete Roadmap. Exodus 90 is your concrete and actionable roadmap for prayer, penance, and fraternity. The 90-day benchmark is not an arbitrary number. That’s the period it takes to re-learn the satisfaction of self-mastery and freedom.

Exodus 90 starts January 13th and will end at Easter. You can make this the best Lent ever with great sacrifice and do it with other men who are all looking to better themselves spiritually.

Contact Eric Russek at [email protected] or Fr. Kowalczyk at [email protected] to get signed up. We will set the meeting date once we have everyone signed. Here is a link to check it out. https://exodus90.com/

Parish Calendar THOMAS BECKET (1118-1170) DECEMBER 29 Solemnity of Mary Vigil Mass 4:00 pm (St. Peter’s Church) To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and Tuesday, politics to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More December 31st Parish Wide Scapular Enrollment 5:00 pm *After Mass* declared, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!” (St. Peter’s Church) Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made Parish Office Closed archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Solemnity of Mary, Mother of Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing 9:00 am God *Holy Day of Obligation* Wednesday, secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, (St. Peter’s Church) January 1st Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship Parish Wide Scapular Enrollment turned into a ferocious, almost 10:00 am *After Mass* irrational hatred. As eight (St. Peter’s Church) centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at Friday, Threads of Love the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, 9:30 am January 3rd (St. Martha Hall) Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first 9:00 am Doughnut Sunday nor last good shepherd to lay (St. Peter’s Dining Hall) down his life as the price of Sunday, 11:30 am freedom for Christ’s church and January 5th justice for Christ’s sheep. *No Children’s Liturgy of the —Peter Scagnelli
