Berman Papers: Collection I Held by Special Collections, Linderman Library Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18015 Call No.: SC MS 095 Berman Papers Page 1 of 154 rev. 05/24/2006 Biographical Sketch Philip Isaac Berman and Muriel Mallin Berman, husband and wife – the “amazing Bermans” as they were often called – worked together as a team throughout the fifty-five years of their marriage, in raising their family, managing their businesses, making frequent trips abroad, collecting art, and planning philanthropy. This biographical sketch is therefore an account, not of one person alone, but of two together, who devoted a great deal of their astonishing energy and considerable fortune to philanthropy and public service, in their home city of Allentown, their home state of Pennsylvania, and around the world, especially in Israel. Philip Berman was born on June 28, 1915, in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, son of Joseph and Dora (Feingold) Berman. In 1932 he enrolled at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, but in 1933 returned home to join the family trucking business, from which he built his fortune. On September 23, 1942, he married Muriel Mallin. In the same week, however, he also joined the U.S. Marine Corps, with which he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Muriel Mallin Berman was born on June 21 1914, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, daughter of Solomon and Dora (Cooperman) Mallin. From The Pennsylvania State College of Optometry in Philadelphia she earned her doctorate in 1938 and maintained her license in optometry until 1984. In 1945 Philip Berman was relieved of active duty with the Marine Corps. -

Father Francis P. Rogers The Grand Jury will never be able to determine how many boys Father Francis P. Rogers raped and sexually abused in his more than 50 years as a priest. Nor, probably, will we or anyone else be able to calculate the number of boys the Archdiocese could have saved from sexual abuse had it investigated potential victims rather than protecting itself from scandal and shielding this sexually abusive priest. We have learned of at least three victims who we believe would not have been abused had the Archdiocese taken decisive action when it learned of Fr. Rogers’ “familiarity” with boys. We find that the Archdiocese received a litany of verifiable reports beginning shortly after Fr. Rogers’ 1946 ordination and continuing for decades about his serious misconduct with, and abuse of, boys. One of his victims described waking up intoxicated in the priest’s bed, opening his eyes to see Fr. Rogers, three other priests, and a seminarian surrounding him. Two of the priests ejaculated on him while Fr. Rogers masturbated himself. Then Fr. Rogers sucked on the victim’s penis, pinched his nipples, kissed him, and rubbed his stubbly beard all over him. The former altar boy, whom Fr. Rogers began abusing when he was about 12 years old, remains haunted by memories of the abuse more than 35 years later. Father Rogers’ file demonstrates that the Archdiocese responded to reports of his crimes with a shameful half-century of transfers, excuses, and finger-wagging threats that did nothing to deter the priest from indulging his self-acknowledged “weakness” and that exposed every boy in his path to the very real and horrible possibility of sexual abuse. -

William Writes: Ember Days were traditionally four sets of 3 days (always Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) in the week follow- Holy Mass ing the First Sunday of Lent, in December in the week following St. Lucy’s Day (Dec 13th), in the week following Pentecost Sunday, and SUNDAY week following the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross 8:30 am Extraordinary Form (Latin) th 11:00 am Novus Ordo (English) (September 14 ). They fell by the wayside after the changes in the 4:30 pm Syro-Malabar Rite (Malayalam) Church Calendar in 1969, probably because penance had fallen by the wayside in people’s minds in the pop culture of the 60’s! They MONDAY may still be followed, but requiring their observance belongs to the 12:00 pm Extraordinary Form (Latin) National Conferences of Bishops; our Conference has not acted on TUESDAY-FRIDAY them. The Ember Days were days of fast and abstinence, originally 6:00 pm Novus Ordo (English) occasioned by the agricultural feast of ancient Rome, they came to be SATURDAY observed by Christians, in a spirit of gratitude, for sanctification at the change of the different seasons of the year. In former times, Ordi- 9:00 am Extraordinary Form (Latin) nations were held during Ember Days, and so the penance of all the HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION Faithful from the Pope down to the children, also asked for God's 6:00pm Novus Ordo (English) blessing on the clergy to be ordained. -

Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting. -

! " # $ % & '()*) + ,-./ 0 0 0 The Colors of the Vestments There are five liturgical colors: White, Green, Red, Red, Purple, and Black. White: is the symbol of purity. It is used on all feasts of Our Lord except those relating to His sufferings; on feasts of Our Lady; on the feasts of saints that are not martyrs. Red : is the figure of blood and fire. The Church assigns it to the feasts of the martyrs and apostles; to Pentecost Sunday; to feasts connected with the Passion of Our Lord Green : is the symbol of hope. It is used on the Sundays from Epiphany to Septuagesima and on the Sundays after Pentecost. ( The Sacred Congregation of Rites permits the use of gold vestments instead of red, white or green, provided the material to be of pure cloth of gold) Violet : the penitential color, is used during advent and Lent and on the Vigils of the greater feasts. (Vestments of rose color may be worn in place of violet on two days during the year: the third Sunday of Advednt, Gaudete Sunday; and the fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday). Black: the sign of mourning is used on Good Friday, and in Masses of the Dead. The Church Law of Abstinence and Fast 1) The Law of Abstinence forbids the use of flesh meat and the juice thereof (soup, etc). Eggs, cheese, butter and seasonings of food are permitted. The Law of Fasting forbids more than one full meal a day but does not forbid a small amount of food in the morning and in the evening. -

A brief summary of their usage, according to the church year, follows; WHITE - light, innocence, purity, joy, triumph, glory • Season of Christmas • Season of Easter • Feasts of the Lord, other than of His passion • Feasts of Mary, the angels, and saints who were not martyrs • All Saints (1 November) • Feasts of the Apostles • Nuptial Masses • Masses for the dead (Requiem Masses) when the deceased is a baptized child who died before the age of reason Note: White is the color of Popes’ non-liturgical dress. White can be replaced by Silver.
