Last year was very tough for W.S.G.A, as it was for the entire nation. Golfers felt the economic crunch along with everyone else. I am proud to say that we were able to keep our commitment to our educational scholarship and junior golf programs. I feel that we must do everything we can do to make sure that we are operating effi ciently as possible. We have committees looking at our policies and procedures to make sure that we are instep with the rest of the nation. These committees will be giving reports that require action from the general body. I urge all of you to give these reports proper attention and respond in the appropriate time and manner. There are many changes recommended. This is the time for your input so do not pass up the chance.

I want to thank all of you that are working on the various committees. I really ap preciate the dedication shown and the efforts put forth.

Gus Robinson President, W.S.G.A. ... Reports on the Annual Tournament

Western Staters packed lightly and headed for the Annual Championships in Palm Springs this year. An unusual break in the seasonal hot weather afforded the tournament players two almost perfect days for golfing. George Colebrook, the general tournament chairman and his staff did an outstanding job in procuring for us three of the finest courses available, reasonable accommodations, memorable tee prizes and a full social calendar. If music was to your liking, there was music Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the Electric Slide was put to the ultimate test as we in turn tested the dance floor at the Hilton. The "We Are Family" theme was surely in evident for the days and evenings as families participated in social card playing, enjoyed leisure time around the pool and were treated to a very classy fashion show and jam at poolside. Wives found ample time to shop at the various stores and returned with; (to hear them tell it); some great bargains. If my expectations were let down any, it would have been the talent show. I did not show my appreciation to the four ladies; non seemingly over the age of 15; who's Rap Renditions that continually used the "F" and the "MF" word in front of the families and younger children. Add to this my puritanical dismay when they were awarded the first prize of $500.00. This being the Hall of Fame induc tion year, we witnessed the honoring of three of Western States members who have contributed to the progress of the association. Inducted were Mrs. Pearl Carey, past president; Mrs. Alma Jackson, WSGA treasurer; Mr. Joseph Gardener, past tournament chairman. Our congratulations to all. As the old saying goes, if you didn't like Palm Springs this year, you don't like Ice Cream and yours truly consumed his share of both. If you were to ask me, I would say to make your plans early to attend next years annual in Palm Springs. We had a BALL. Because of their loyal and dedicated services to the Association over the years, the following recipients were inducted by President Carey: President-Emeritus, J. Cullen Fentress (deceased); Honorary Vice President, Vernon Gaskin (deceased); Morris Henderson (deceased); Mary L. Woodyard (deceased); Honorary Vice President, Mae Crowder; Clifton Walker (deceased) and Felbert Cobbs (deceased).

In complying with tradition as established by the Association, twelve more worthy members of long standing and meritorious services have been inducted into the "HALL OF FAME", they are Frank D. Adams, Sr., in June 1981; Lillian J. Fentress, in June 1983; William "Bill" Dickey, in June 1985; L. Diane Marbury, in June 1987; A.B. Mansfield, in June 1987; Ella Mae Reason, in June 1987; Joseph Charbonnet, Jr., in June 1989; Mercedes Sanford, in June 1989; and Lesley A. Williams in 1989; Pearl Carey, in June 1991; Joseph Gardener, in June 1991; Alma Jackson, in June 1991.

On June 19, 1981, the affable and articulate William "Bill" Dickey of Phoenix, Arizona, was elected President of WSGA. During Mr. Dickey's term of office from 1981 -83, several major goals were achieved i.e., establishment of the Association's own Handicapping Computer System; the development and promotion of a strong on-going Junior Golf program; with Golf Championships being held most successfully during his administration, and expertise in sponsorship of 7-Up for the Junior Championships and ANHEUSER BUSCH, INC., for Annual WSGA Championships. We have continued to maintain this fine relationship, and would like to say again "THANKS" to our Sponsors.

Mr. Fred Parker, who took over the helm as President of WSGA in June 1983, for a two year term, was unanimously re-elected for another two year stint on June 27,1985, serving thereafter very capably until June 25,1987. He kept in tune with his predecessors by reemphasizing and perfecting specific goals for progress and expansion. It was through his initiative, consistency and enthusiasm that WSGA continued to move forward by an increase in membership; development of the tremendous supportive annual Championships; expansion of the skills and growth of our junior golfers, and increasing financial incentives to the youth of our Education and Scholarship Program.

Our 8th President, Mr. Guster Robinson, a gentleman of wisdom and integrity, was elected on June 25, 1987 for a term of three consecutive years. At the expiration of Mr. Robinson's first term, he was re-elected President for another three year term on June 21,1990. During his operations in this very important position, he has always served with dignity and pride, plus doing the things required as a motivating President. He is continuing to dedicate himself very strongly to the thriving and overwhelming youth departments of WSGA in Golf, and Education & Scholarships. In making himself available at all times for the good of the organization as a whole, Mr. Robinson has proven that he is fully capable of mastering the many challenges and demands of WSGA in today's New Era! He has brought to the organization expertise, stamina and progress, so let us all join him more aggressively in support.

OUR FORE-FATHERS HAD A DREAM and it was made a reality on January 1 , 1988, when WSGA became a member of the United States Golf Association.

WE ARE PROUD of the role WSGA has played in golf since its inception in 1953. Briefly, we shall acknowledge a few: Bill Wright of Fir State Golf Club, became the first Black National Champion when he won the USGA National Public Links title. Then, when the Professional Golfers Association lifted its Caucasian clause in 1960, WSGA was able to help Charles Sifford financially as he went on the Tour. Ashley Smith, a perennial WSGA Champion has won the Oakland City Men's bauble and another perennial WSGA Champion, Alton Duhon, of Cosmopolitan Golf Club, became the second Black to win a National Champi onship, when he took the 1982 USGA National Senior Amateurs the same year. We also add the names of Al McDaniel of Pasadena, Frank Huff of Desert Mashie, and Gordon Brown of Paramount, winners of the Pasadena, Phoenix and San Diego, City titles respectively to the names above.

Since its inception, the Western States Golf Association has developed into a viable organization of strength and repute, and is proud to have its member clubs and co-sponsors continue to demonstrate their faith in the many benefits of golf and the importance of organized competition. Through this faith and goodwill, WSGA will continue to work in the constructive role it must play in the promotion of golf. WSGA is committed to a meaningful, viable comprehensive program for youth, which involves its Junior Golfers and its Education and Scholarship programs. ♦ 38th Annual Championship Western States Golf Association is very excited about the 38th Annual Championship. The tournament committee, under the direction of Mr. George Colebrook, has been working very hard to make this an enjoyable event.

SCHOLARSHIPS The Scholarship Program under the direction of Wilbert Harris of Cosmopolitan Golf Club assisted by Southern Area Ways & Means Chairperson Doris LaCour of Vernoncrest Golf Club made great strides in 1991 by raising enough money to donate $250 each to four college students to assist them in continuing their education. The proceeds from the area sponsored Sadie Hawkins Dance April 11 th this year will be sufficient to make the same level of donation. We really believe "a mind is a terrible thing to waste".

MEMBERSHIP The Southern Area Committee has appointed Katie Catron of Tee Masters Golf Club as membership chairperson for the area. She will be responsible for developing ways to increase membership in WSGA area clubs as well as maintaining an accurate up-to-date record of membership in the respective clubs. This is considered one or the more important assignments in the area. We need to grow as an organization to remain viable and we need to know who our members are and that they are financial. Thus far Katie has developed a pocket-size booklet of information about each club to be used in recruitment efforts. Golfing Events

W e are Fam ily Welcome to this year's 38th Annual Western States Golf Association Championships. Our primary theme for this year's Tournament will again be "We Are Family". Last year's tournament brought many people together in a spirit of friendship and competition. The winners exemplified the excellence of true com petitiveness, and those not so fortunate were drawn back to the drawing board. The non-golfer were provided with a fun filled weekend. In essence, the tournament was like a family affair. Therefore, like the old saying, "W hy fix it if it's not broken".

This year's event will again be focused around the family traditions. The bringing together of people from all facets of life to enjoy a family golf tournament known as the WSGA Championships.

Throughout my travels, I continue to hear members ask the question "What is WSGA doing for me"? I again ask the members to rephrase this question and ask yourself, "What am I doing for WSGA"? WSGA is a sleeping giant.

1) WSGA is one of the largest minority golf organization in the world

2) USGA (United States Golf Association) has granted WSGA an exclusive right afforded to no other golf organization in the United States.

3) WSGA has one of the finest junior program in the United States.

4) WSGA has the human resources to establish a golfing phenomenon.

5) WSGA Championship is by far one of the largest golf tournament in the U.S.

I could go on and on, but, I think you got the point. Let's work together to build from what we have. So, this weekend, lay back, take off your shoes and enjoy the great hospitality of WSGA Comradeship.

Good luck to all the participants.
