Lot 414 414 CB 1850 outer to London with a very fine example of Sydney Views 3d yellow-green/yellowish paper SG 39 [14; excellent colour & large even margins] tied by bars cancel, light Sydney cds of OC*14/1850 in red alongside, poor London arrival b/s, horizontal filing fold at the base & faults on the reverse, pencil-signed by "W Balasse" & "AD" (Alberto Diena). The stamp is graded "A" & is quite exceptional for a 3d on cover. 2,500

Lot 415 415 C (B) 1866 cover endorsed "Per SS Hero via/Torres Straits Batavia/& Marseilles", to Nottinghamshire with Perf 13 8d red-orange SG 167a (and a 2d stamp lost) tied by Sydney duplex of '66/JY31', fair 'WORKSOP/OC30/66' arrival b/s, repaired flap faults. A great rarity of maritime mail.

Hero was diverted from a Sydney-New Zealand service to succeed "Souchays" on the experimental Torres Strait service between Brisbane & Batavia, thence to Europe. Her first departure from Moreton Bay was scheduled for 4/8/1866. However, the propellor shaft seized & she had to be beached for repairs, finally departing 20/8/1866 & missing the French mailboat at Batavia. Colin Tabeart at pp367-8 states the only recorded cover endorsed for this service was dated at Sydney -/8/1866 with a Worksop arrival of OC21/66 indicating carriage from Sydney per P&O "Massilia", departed Alexandria 5/10/1866; arrived Southampton 20/10/1866.

The cover here - almost certainly from this same correspondence - arrived 9 days later. Our assessment is largely in line with Tabeart's reasoning: carried per "Hero" to Batavia, arriving 8/9/1866; then Dutch ship "Minister Franzen van den Putte" departed Batavia 15/9/1866, arrived Singapore 19/9/1866; then per French ship - probably in a closed bag - arriving Marseilles 28/10/1866. Colin Tabeart suggests carriage from Singapore per P&O but the extension dates from Galle do not conform to that theory. What is clear is that this is the first cover to be recorded per "Hero" via Torres Strait. 400 Page:89 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Jun 18, 2015

However, in the BPA's defence, this is a common error, but it highlights why Australian stamps - and especially shades - need to be expertised by people who handle them regularly. Geoff Kellow at page 51 states "The rose shade is often misidentified...Proper identification depends on paper characteristics, or the presence of known Campbell secondary flaws] 400T Page:101 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Jun 18, 2015

It's odd that Bell produced a 6d value when the tender specified production of 1d 2d & a new 4d denomination only: perhaps they had been prepared earlier in anticipation of new designs being required. Lot 477 477 CB - Pin-Perf Roulette about 10 6d dull orange [36], rouletted at left & right but cut from the sheet to preserve the design resulting in margins close - at the base - to large, minor soiling; tied to outer by Barred Numeral '1' of Melbourne (part-b/s of AP/1856), to London "pr Earl of Sefton", light but clear 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/JY16/*858/=PACKET=' cds & London arrival of the next day both in red on the face, minor blemishes & a small repair at the top of the cover. A great rarity; unlisted by Gibbons. Ex JRW Purves, Rodney Perry and Roland Geitenbeek. Illustrated by Geoff Kellow at page 93: at page 94 he states "Several examples are known with a pin perforation gauging about 10...including two covers dated in 1856 and 1857...[They] must be classed, in the absence of any other evidence, as private and unofficial". RPSofV Certificate (2015) states "it is genuine, correctly rated and the stamp belongs".

This unusual form of separation predates by at least 18 months Calvert's official experiments of October 1857. It was almost certainly a private expedient that was clearly unsatisfactory, because any attempt to separate the stamps along such widely spaced roulettes would inevitably have resulted in damage to all units. In this case, presumably after initial attempts to tear the stamps apart had failed miserably, the sender resorted to a pair of scissors. The use of this unofficial separation is clearly analogous to Britain's Archer Roulettes - Cat £25,000 for a single mint stamp - and similar expedients in other countries. A classic Belgian cover with private roulettes - Ex Gary Kasparov - sold at auction in April 2012 for €200,000 plus commission. Admittedly, this classic Victorian cover is neither as attractive nor as valuable as the Belgian cover but it is just as rare. 5,000
