The snake Phalotris lemniscatus is a polymorphic species regarding color, which varies between light shades with a yellow predominance (pale yellow-brown) to darker shades with a red predominance (red-dark). Pale yellow- brown individuals are more frequent in coastal populations while there is a tendency of increasing the frequency of red-dark morphs in inland areas. Considering the variation in substrate color along the species distribution (light/ sandy on the coast to reddish and dark/argillaceous in inland areas), we raise the hypothesis that the predation rate of each morph would be lower in sites were its crypsis potential is higher. -

Contents: The genus WagZerophis - The genus Xeno don - The genus XenophoZis - References. THE GENUS wAGLEROPHIS ROMANO & HOGE, 1972 This genus contains only one species. Prior to 1972 this species was known as Xenodon merremii (Wagler, 1824). This species is found in Surinam. General data for the genus: Head: The head is short and slightly flattened. The strong neck is only marginally narrower than the head. The relatively large eyes have round pupils. Body: Short and stout with smooth scales. The scales have one apical groove. The formation of the dorsal scales is characteristic for this genus. These are arranged so that the upper rows are at an angle to the lower ones (see figure 1) . Tail: Short. Behaviour: Terrestrial and both nocturnal and di urnal. Food: Frogs, toads, lizards and sometimes snakes, insects or small mammals. Habitat: Damp forest floors near swamps or water. Reproduction: Oviparous. Remarks: When threatened or disturbed, the fore part of the body is inflated and the neck is spread in a cobra-like fashion. This is an aggressive snake which will invariably resort to biting if the warning behaviour described above is not heeded. This genus (in common with the genera Xenodon, Heterodon and Lystrophis) has two enlarged teeth attached to the back of the upper jaw. -

Estado del conocimiento Alejandra HERNANDO1 y Blanca ALVAREZ1 Abstract: CHROMOSONIC STUDIES ON SAURIA AND ANPHISBENIDS. Morphological characters are traditionally involbed in taxonomic studies of Squamata. However, cytogenetic information from chromosome number, size and shape to molecular level can be an important contribution for systematics and phylogenetic analysis. In this paper, we summarize the karyotypic data available for lizards and amphisbaenians species distributed in the Argentinean littoral region. Chromosome formulae, banding patterns when exist and a brief remark about genera or families cytogenetic features are given. Key words: Lizards - Amphisbaenians - Cytogenetics - Karyotypes - Chromosome banding - Argentinean littoral region. Palabras clave: Saurios - Anfisbénidos - Citogenética - Cariotipos - Bandeos cromosomas - Litoral fluvial argentino Iintroducción Los caracteres cromosómicos pueden brindar información no evidente a nivel fenético (como en el caso de las especies crípticas) y, dependiendo del nivel de análisis, son herramientas importantes para resolver problemas sistemáticos. Además, como los caracteres cariológicos, morfológicos, inmunológicos, isoenzimáticos no evolucionan de manera paralela las comparaciones del grado de diversificación de los cariotipos con el grado de divergencia de otros caracteres son útiles para inferir relaciones filogenéticas (Peccinini- Seale 1981). Los cromosomas pueden analizarse teniendo en cuenta la forma, tamaño, número y comporta- miento durante la meiosis y mitosis. Con el desarrollo de las técnicas de coloración diferencial y de hibridación in situ es posible identificar los cromosomas por sus patrones característicos de bandas. -

UMA NOVA ESPÉCIE DE Phalotris (SERPENTES, DIPSADIDAE) DO CERRADO NO NORDESTE DO BRASIL A NEW SPECIES OF Phalotris (SERPENTES, DIPSADIDAE) FROM CERRADO IN THE NORTHEAST BRAZIL Adriano Lima Silveira Biótica Estudos Ambientais. Fazenda Gameleira, região de São Jerônimo, CEP 38770-000, João Pinheiro, MG, Brasil [email protected] RESUMO O gênero Phalotris é atualmente composto por 15 espécies de serpentes que se distribuem em áreas de formações abertas na América do Sul. As espécies do gênero encontram-se arranjadas em três grupos, dos quais o grupo de P. nasutus contempla esta espécie e P. concolor, P. lativittatus, P. nigrilatus e P. labiomaculatus. No presente trabalho, descreve-se uma nova espécie de Phalotris do Cerrado no Nordeste do Brasil, pertencente ao grupo de P. nasutus. O novo táxon é conhecido apenas do holótipo, procedente de Cocos, no sudoeste do estado da Bahia. A nova espécie é diagnosticada das demais congêneres por apresentar uma combinação exclusiva de caracteres, dentre eles: escama rostral proeminente, mas com o ápice arredondado; escama rostral em contato com pré-frontal; 1+1 escamas temporais; número relativamente elevado de escamas ventrais (202) e subcaudais (36); dorso com coloração uniforme, amarelado em preservação e vermelho-alaranjado em vida; dorso e lateral da cabeça de cor preta uniforme, com manchas brancas no lábio; um colar nucal anterior branco, evidente e muito estreito (1-2 escamas); um colar nucal posterior preto, evidente e extenso (3-5 escamas). Dentre as espécies do grupo de P. nasutus, o novo táxon exibe maior similaridade fenotípica com P. labiomaculatus e P. concolor. A nova espécie é considerada endêmica do Cerrado, um dos biomas mais ameaçados do planeta. -

The list comprises of 30 currently known amphibians (28 anurans and two caecilians), which includes 11 families and 15 genera. In addition, individual records per species, distribution in the reserve and brief remarks about the species are presented. The checklist is based on information from museum collections, field guides, unpublished reports and newly collected field data. We are able to confirm the presence of two Eastern Afromontane species in the SHNR: Scolecomorphus cf. vittatus and Callulina cf. kreffti. The latter has not been recorded since the original collection of a single specimen over 50 years ago. -
