We expect similar numbers this season, if not more, and need your help to achieve 100%. In addition to helping the University, interviewing gives you a chance to catch up with other alumni over breakfast/lunch and to meet some truly outstanding high school students. We look forward to another great year! Anna Dunn ’07 and Beth Stahlman ’89, Chairs THE PRINCETON CLUB OF GEORGIA Page 3 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award The Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award was established by the Princeton Club of Georgia in 1985. Unique to our Club, the Award honors Atlanta-area high school juniors who, through community involvement and personal initiative, best exemplify the ideals of service and volunteerism espoused by Woodrow Wilson, former President of the United States and of Princeton University. The ideal candidate volunteers out of a passion to improve our community, not to fulfill school requirements or to build a resume, and for whom service is a part of everyday life. Past winners have created their own service projects, have made long-term commitments to established community projects, or have taken existing projects to exceptional levels. The Committee selected twelve winners for the 2014 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award: David Sor (North Clayton High School) Dae Gun Chung Kim (North Gwinnett High School) Maddie Zgonc (Hillgrove High School) Sarah Henning (Grayson High School) Heather Smith (Hillgrove High School) Hailey Bednar (Mount Paran Christian School) Lashawn Jackson (Stephenson High School) Samantha Smith (Blessed Trinity Catholic High School) Joseph Bersson (Roswell High School) Archie Wilson (Dominion Christian Schools) Oliver Sandreuter (Roswell High School) Molly Withington (The Lovett School) An award presentation ceremony was held on Wednesday, September 17th at the Georgia State Capitol and was followed by a group picture with Governor Nathan Deal. The 2015 search for the next group of outstanding young community service leaders in Atlanta is beginning. We are looking for metro-area high school juniors who have demonstrated terrific community initiatives. Applications will soon be available on our website: http://princetonclubofgeorgia.com. We would welcome volunteers who can assist in compiling and sending applications, reviewing applications and planning the award ceremony. For more information, please email co-Chairs Charlie Hurt ’91 ([email protected]) or Justin Im ’97 ([email protected]). * * * * * * * * * * Parents’ Committee Update The Parents' Committee continued to provide a point of contact with the Princeton Club of GA for parents of undergraduate students, particularly the parents of the incoming freshman class. Bill deGolian ’72 hosted the annual send-off party for the frosh, at which parents gathered separately from the incoming students for some lively discussions about the transition from being the parent of a high school student to being the parent of a college student. Arthur Kent '72 [email protected] Get Plugged In Check out the Princeton Club of Georgia on Facebook or at our website: www.princetonclubofgeorgia.com You can also update your profile on Tigernet at www.alumni.princeton.edu to ensure you receive mailings and emails from the PCGA. • Eyes Wide Open the SPRINGMONT NEWSLETTER - ALUMNI EDITION Summer 2020
eyes wide open THE SPRINGMONT NEWSLETTER - ALUMNI EDITION Summer 2020 IN THIS ISSUE Dear Springmont Alumni and Alumni Families: What a trying year 2020 has been so far! In my 19 2 Letter from the years as a Head of School, this has easily been the Head of School, most challenging to navigate, and I’m sure many continued of you have had similar experiences at work and at home. I owe a great amount of gratitude to the Covid-19 Springmont community for the many ways we Emergency have pulled together to handle this unprecedented Tuition situation and the obstacles it presented. Assistance Fund Springmont’s last day of on-campus lessons was Thursday, March 12th. On March 13th Parent/ 3 Congratulations Teacher Conferences took place as scheduled, and Class of 2020 we dismissed for the weekend with plans for Faculty and Staff to return to campus the following Monday to organize and strategize for what we thought 4 Maria’s 150th would be two weeks of remote learning. By Sunday, Birthday I alerted Faculty and Staff not to report to campus the following day as the risk of infection was increasing by the moment. Alumni Association It’s said that “necessity is the mother of invention” and that certainly was accurate. Changes Many in the modern workplace are equipped to work from home as needed, but that was not the case for educators, especially those dedicated to the hands-on/experiential pedagogy of the Montessori experience. Our teachers, assistants, specialists and 5 As Seen on administration worked tirelessly to launch a Learning From Home program that was Instagram student-centered and honored Springmont’s mission and core values.

Georgia Forensic Coaches Association 2nd Annual Varsity State Championships Westminster Schools Atlanta, GA March 9-10, 2012 Mario Herrera, Tournament Director Jenny Heidt, Tournament Host Richard Bracknell, Individual Events Tab Room Director John McClellan, Public Forum/Lincoln Douglas Debate Tab Room Director Jeffrey Miller, Policy Debate Tab Room Director Welcome to the 2nd Annual Varsity State Championships Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the 2012 GFCA Varsity State Championships! This letter comes to you after quite a bit of thought. Jeff Miller asked me to have the letter completed much sooner than he actually received it. I was, and am, unsure what to say. Should this be a “thank you” letter to the GFCA for allowing me to serve as president for the last two years? Should it be a “State of Debate” letter? Should I offer ideas, insights, reasons? Should it be formal and efficient? No. For those who are unaware, I have some shocking news.I used to work for Disney. I know, big surprise. I also am a huge fan of Disney animated films. The reason why I am, however, may surprise. I am NOT a huge fan of a Disney Happy Ending. They are predictable, syrupy and just too… Happy. Instead, I prefer the back story of those Disney films. I like the Disney formula that seems to work on audiences, even after 80 years. There is a struggle, an unexpected friendship, a reliance on truth and possibility, acknowledgement of personal hubris and doubt, a decision, moral culpability and, finally, a goal within reach. The next movie changes things a bit, but only slightly.

The Clarkston boys brought home the first state trophy in 1940, and 41 other teams have since realized the big prize in the ensuing 76 years. From legendary coach Elmer Morrow ’s dominating boys teams at Druid Hills in the 1950s to the current boys powerhouses at Miller Grove and Columbia, the list of win- ners is an impressive one. Druid Hills knocked off Avondale (50 -44), Tifton (47 -44) and Jeff Davis (55 -42) in state finals in 1953, 1954 and 1957 respectively. Stone Mountain and Clarkston on the boys side, and Druid Hills and Stone Mountain among the girls served as the other early local powers. E.L. Rainey , another of DeKalb County’s original hoop coaching giants, led Stone Mountain to the Class B crown in 1957. Tom Church guided Clarkston to its second boys state championship with a victo- rious effort in the class B final in 1964. The girls matched the boys for the first time at Druid Hill in 1960, with Virginia Canady coaching that squad to the Class AAA title.
