We would like to thank our friends at Arnall Golden Gregory and King & Spalding for providing the office space for our Saturday interviewing sessions this year. We would also like to thank Sam Burch ’97 for hosting the early admit reception and Bill deGolian ’72 for hosting the matriculating students reception.

In addition, we would like to extend our appreciation to all of the alumni who volunteered their time to interview applicants this cycle. We couldn’t have done it without you!

We are currently looking for additional volunteers to interview applicants for the Class of 2019.

* * * * * * * * * * * * Alumni Schools Committee – Looking Forward With your help and support, the ASC was able to offer interviews to 100% of the applicants from our region last year. We expect similar numbers this season, if not more, and need your help to achieve 100%. In addition to helping the University, interviewing gives you a chance to catch up with other alumni over breakfast/lunch and to meet some truly outstanding high school students. Here are the dates and locations for our interviewing sessions this year: EARLY ACTION INTERVIEWS REGULAR DECISION INTERVIEWS

If you can help out on any of those days, please email Beth Stahlman '89 at [email protected]. Even if you are unable to make the Saturday sessions, we always need some help with interviews of students who themselves cannot make one of our Satur- day interview days. Be on the lookout for emails asking for help with these individual interviews.

Please join us in welcoming Amanda Chen ’13 and Aixa Pascual ’88 as ASC assistant chairs. We look forward to another great year!

Anna Dunn ’07 and Beth Stahlman ’89, Chairs THE PRINCETON CLUB OF GEORGIA Page 3 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award

The Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award was established by the Princeton Club of Georgia in 1985. Unique to our Club, the Award honors Atlanta-area high school juniors who, through community involvement and personal initiative, best exemplify the ideals of service and volunteerism espoused by Woodrow Wilson, former President of the and of Princeton University. The ideal candidate volunteers out of a passion to improve our community, not to fulfill school requirements or to build a resume, and for whom service is a part of everyday life.

Past winners have created their own service projects, have made long-term commitments to established community projects, or have taken existing projects to exceptional levels.

The Committee selected twelve winners for the 2014 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award:

David Sor (North Clayton High School) Dae Gun Chung Kim (North Gwinnett High School) Maddie Zgonc (Hillgrove High School) Sarah Henning (Grayson High School) Heather Smith (Hillgrove High School) Hailey Bednar (Mount Paran Christian School) Lashawn Jackson (Stephenson High School) Samantha Smith (Blessed Trinity Catholic High School) Joseph Bersson (Roswell High School) Archie Wilson (Dominion Christian Schools) Oliver Sandreuter (Roswell High School) Molly Withington (The )

An award presentation ceremony was held on Wednesday, September 17th at the Georgia State Capitol and was followed by a group picture with Governor Nathan Deal.

The 2015 search for the next group of outstanding young community service leaders in Atlanta is beginning. We are looking for metro-area high school juniors who have demonstrated terrific community initiatives. Applications will soon be available on our website: http://princetonclubofgeorgia.com. We would welcome volunteers who can assist in compiling and sending applications, reviewing applications and planning the award ceremony. For more information, please email co-Chairs Charlie Hurt ’91 ([email protected]) or Justin Im ’97 ([email protected]).

Parents’ Committee Update

The Parents' Committee continued to provide a point of contact with the Princeton Club of GA for parents of undergraduate students, particularly the parents of the incoming freshman class. Bill deGolian ’72 hosted the annual send-off party for the frosh, at which parents gathered separately from the incoming students for some lively discussions about the transition from being the parent of a high school student to being the parent of a college student. Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Some may think it is difficult to have a positive experience while trying to improve the racial status quo. But year after year, the Princeton Prize in Race Relations (PPRR) manages to give us, and the students it awards, a chance to do just that. Every year, participation in the PPRR gives all of us, regardless of age, race, or politics, new tools to improve our knowledge and perception. The PPRR encourages, recognizes, and awards the brave young people who positively resolve racial issues in their schools and communities, and provide leadership on these issues for their generation.

This year’s Princeton Prize winner for the 2013-2014 academic year was Kiana Chambers, a senior at Northview High School in John’s Creek. As the winner, Kiana won the $1,000 prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Princeton for the annual PPRR Symposium on Race with the winners from the other participating U.S. cities. Northview H.S.’s students are mostly white and Asian. It is approximately 7% African-American. Kiana, in the face of substantial indifference, took on the mature task of educating the entire school about the importance of African-Americans in American history, particularly during Black History Month. By the end of a three-year effort, the committee she led grew from 10 black students to 50 racially diverse members, and the February school assembly became a celebration attended and celebrated by multiple races. Winners of the physically beautiful runner-up certificates included Nikunj Jinan (Riverwood International Charter School), Archie Wilson (Dominion Christian), and Erin Kirchner (Marist). The finalist competition was strong this year. We are proud to award each of them.

The PPRR Award ceremony was held on May 8, 2014 at the law offices of Troutman Sanders. This year's speaker was Beth-Sara Wright, Ph.D. She is a graduate of Princeton, received a Master’s degree from Cambridge, a doctorate from NYU, and has been a professor at . Among other things, Dr. Wright, using many of her own life experiences, spoke to the students inspirationally about the importance of letting other people see them for who they are.

In 2014, the PPRR reached new heights in terms of attendance at the award ceremony. Once again, the PPRR Prize Committee would like to thank alumnus and new committee member Mark Newman and Troutman Sanders for hosting the award ceremony. Many thanks to our PPRR Committee Chair, Katherine Brokaw; Co- Chair, Darryle Merlette; Karen Ruffin, for bringing the food and refreshments to the ceremony; and all the alumni who read essays. Special thanks go to Rich Holland for doing such a great job at driving attendance, and to Alison Earle, our new Secretary, who played such a dynamic role in this year’s activities.

The PPRR remains a one-of-a kind award. It is awarded by Princeton in most major cities around the U.S. The PPRR defines “race relations” as: “a volunteer activity in the last 12 months that has had a significant, positive impact on race relations – broadly defined – in his or her school community.” We should all be proud of Princeton for its bold vision and for putting its name on this award. This year will be the 10th year of the PPRR in Atlanta. We encourage all Princeton alumni to participate.

AS ANNUAL GIVING SETS A NEW ALL-TIME RECORD, METRO ATLANTA ALUMS PROVE, YET AGAIN, THAT THEY APPRECIATE THEIR PRINCETON EXPERIENCE AND ARE MORE

THAN WILLING TO “PAY IT FORWARD.”

This year’s Annual Giving Campaign, which concluded on June 30th and was the first Campaign since Chris Eisgruber ’83 assumed the Princeton presidency, set an all-time record of $58.75 million in unrestricted gifts to Princeton. The overall undergrad alumni/ae participation rate of 61.4% was the highest participation percentage in 45 years, with the largest number of donors and gifts ever.

As we have done in past Campaigns, the participation rate of Metro Atlanta area alumni/ae exceeded the national participation rate by 1.6%, and our aggregate unrestricted gifts to Princeton exceeded $465,000 – the 2nd highest total ever (only exceeded by last year’s record-breaking amount) and more than $100,000 greater than any previous total from the Atlanta Region (other than last year’s total, which was more than $300,000 greater than any previous total from our Region).

Thanks to everyone who so generously participated in the recently-concluded Annual Giving Campaign. Bill Kaspers ’70, our Annual Giving Regional Chair for the past 40 years who still doesn’t look a day over 26, 36, 46, 56, 66, has agreed to assist with his class’s fundraising efforts for its upcoming 45th Reunion next May. Bill is, therefore, looking for one or more volunteers to co-chair this coming year’s Annual Giving Campaign. According to Bill, assisting with Annual Giving is a great way to pay it forward, particularly in the Metro Atlanta area, where alums continue to display Southern gentility when reminded of the opportunity to contribute to Princeton, and where the “nuts and bolts” of contacting alums can be scheduled so as not to conflict with other professional or personal obligations. If you’re interested in helping Bill with this year’s Campaign, please give him a call at 404-888-3740.

In related news, TBS’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel Louise (“Weezie”) Sams ’79 has become the new National Annual Giving Chair for Princeton. Congratulations and good luck, Weezie!

Thanks again to everyone who helped make this another great year of giving to Princeton. This and future generations of Princetonians will surely appreciate and be better for it.

Princeton AlumniCorps Returns to Atlanta The Princeton AlumniCorps (“PAC”) helps to place Princeton graduates who are interested in nonprofits, to include sponsoring Project 55 fellowships and other civic leadership initiatives. PAC is currently looking to secure a commitment from at least 5 civic service organizations willing to provide placement for Princeton fellows and pay the student stipend for the year (about $30,000), as well as identify alumni mentors for the fellows. PAC also plans to put on seminars about public issues that line up with the respective missions of its partner organizations. If you are interested in helping with this project, or know an alum who may be interested, please email Karen Ruffin ’86 at [email protected]. Page 6 THE PRINCETON CLUB OF GEORGIA
