The Clarkston boys brought home the first state trophy in 1940, and 41 other teams have since realized the big prize in the ensuing 76 years. From legendary coach Elmer Morrow ’s dominating boys teams at Druid Hills in the 1950s to the current boys powerhouses at Miller Grove and Columbia, the list of win- ners is an impressive one. Druid Hills knocked off Avondale (50 -44), Tifton (47 -44) and Jeff Davis (55 -42) in state finals in 1953, 1954 and 1957 respectively. Stone Mountain and Clarkston on the boys side, and Druid Hills and Stone Mountain among the girls served as the other early local powers. E.L. Rainey , another of DeKalb County’s original hoop coaching giants, led Stone Mountain to the Class B crown in 1957. Tom Church guided Clarkston to its second boys state championship with a victo- rious effort in the class B final in 1964. The girls matched the boys for the first time at Druid Hill in 1960, with Virginia Canady coaching that squad to the Class AAA title. Stone Mountain brought home the second state crown for girls in 1966, as coach Neil Wooten skippered the Lady Pirates to the top of the field on the class B level. Sequoyah ended a glorious 19 -year run for local schools, romping to a girls champion- ship in the AAA bracket in 1971. The victory by coach Vivian Kendrick ’s Lady Braves proved to be the last one for near- ly a quarter of a century, as several local teams came close but fell just short. Lakeside’s boys twice lost in state finals in 1973 and 1989, while coach Eric Mance ’s Lithonia boys also fell in the championship game in 1994. Dunwoody brought an end to DeKalb County’s state title drought in 1995, as coach Rick Townsend ’s Wildcats finished a perfect 30 -0 season by defeating Shareef Abdur -Rahim and the Wheeler Wildcats (67 -65) in the AAAA final in Albany. Tucker in 1996 and Cedar Grove in 1997 added two more boys trophies, while coach Dave Labarrie ’s Stone Mountain team claimed the next local girls state crown in 1997. Coach David Boyd utilized the talents of Shenard Long , Darryl Labarrie and future Olympic track gold medalist Dwight Phillips in Tucker’s victorious season. Eventual Atlanta Hawk Dion Glover helped the powerhouse Cedar Grove team that finished 32 -1 under the leadership of coach James Dill . The rest of the way has been history, with DeKalb County soaring to new heights on the way to capturing 32 state team titles in the 15 -year period from 2002 to 2016. Columbia (2006; 2008; 2010; 2011, 2012) won five state titles on the boys side under coach Phil McCrary , while Miller Grove owns seven titles and Dunwoody has won twice. Sharman White coached Miller Grove to the last six state triumphs. Southwest DeKalb captured five state crowns under Kathy Walton (2008 -10; 2013, 2016), while Dennis Watkins led Stephenson to three crowns in 2004, 2008 and 2015 and Chantay Frost took Columbia’s girls to titles in 2010, 2012 and 2013. 3 CONTENTS Basketball Guide REGION ALIGNMENTS .................................................................................... 5 ARABIA MOUNTAIN ........................................................................................ 8 CEDAR GROVE ................................................................................................ 10 CHAMBLEE ...................................................................................................... 12 CLARKSTON .................................................................................................... 14 COLUMBIA. ...................................................................................................... 16 CROSS KEYS. ................................................................................................... 18 DRUID HILLS ................................................................................................... 20 DUNWOODY .................................................................................................... 22 LAKESIDE ......................................................................................................... 24 LITHONIA ......................................................................................................... 26 MARTIN LUTHER KING JR ............................................................................ 28 MCNAIR ............................................................................................................ 30 MILLER GROVE ............................................................................................... 32 REDAN .............................................................................................................. 34 SOUTHWEST DEKALB ................................................................................... 36 STEPHENSON ................................................................................................... 38 STONE MOUNTAIN ......................................................................................... 40 TOWERS ............................................................................................................ 42 TUCKER ............................................................................................................ 44 2017 -18 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS ................................................................... 46 TEAM SEASON RECORDS ............................................................................. 52 SCHOOL YEARLY WON -LOSS RECORDS .................................................. 55 ABOUT THE COVER The cover for the DeKalb County Basketball Media Guide is a tribute to legendary Colum- bia boys basketball coach Phil McCrary.
