Photograph by Peter Purland This year’s event was held at Swansea University in a spacious area, which was split in to three, one for the British Championship, one for the junior events and one for the other adult events. There were also a good selection of side rooms where analysis, commentary, bookstall and subsidiary events could be held. Perhaps the only drawbacks were the lack of toilets on the same level as the playing areas and the fact that the place could be likened to a rabbit warren. I don’t think any one lost on time through failing to find their way back to the playing area and the rbitersa of the Seniors were kind to the player who got stuck in the lift! A total of 750 entrants were recorded, up on 2005 but down on the previous year. Certainly in the junior sections this was as a result of the lower graded English players not entering, possibly they need to be an accredited international to cross the Severn Bridge! This did not lead to a lessening of the standard and the results were truly British with trophy winners coming from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. One of our trophy winners was wearing a kilt when he received his cup. The refreshments were above average with a good hot breakfast, choice of a hot or cold lunch and pastries and sandwiches at “Au Boulanger” (excuse my French) until 7pm each day. At the opening we were greeted with “Croeso i’r Prifysgol Cymru Abertawe” and when I said the next sentence in Welsh the juniors showed great consternation! However the welcome was warm (and long from one of the speakers) and the play hard. The weather was also kind to us and one second week player on being asked where he had been to get his tan said “Swansea – I just didn’t play last week.” As well as the chess the grass outside led to much soccer and, apart from one Scot who was impaled on a nail, there were no broken metatarsals or the like. The local pitch and putt also proved very popular as did the beaches of Mumbles and the Gower whilst the Potters Wheel was a great draw for some more mature (can I still use this word?) players. All in all an enjoyable time was had and Great Yarmouth 2007 will already be in most people’s diaries. This article was first published in Chess Today No. 1069 and 1070 (October 2003). Brilliant Mates in Moscow by IM Yochanan Afek, "Problems and games are two equal aspects of chess", wrote once Dr. Milan Vukcevich, the great American composer who passed away earlier this year and who was also a very strong over-the-board master. Obviously he did not refer by that to the number of people involved but rather to the injustice frequently done to this fine art, by too many players who tend to consider it as a waste of time for the purpose of improving one's playing skills. "Relative to the game", he explains, "a good chess problem activates more force per move, uses pieces more efficiently and stresses more their cooperation and interference with each other. A good problem may combine a dozen separate elements into one extraordinary event, in the same way in which a good novel may condense a dozen real lives into a single lifetime of its fictitious hero..." — food for the thought... Not everyone knows that within the immense world of chess, a smaller, yet a highly motivated and constantly growing community of problems and studies fans has developed over the years, organizing a variety of composing and solving events, publishing dozens of books and magazines, awarding official FIDE titles and even holding an annual congress. All this worldwide intensive activity is done voluntarily and winning dozens of prestigious awards definitely will not make one any richer as the prize money, if any, is usually rather modest.

    For Immediate Release Judit Polgar inspires ‘Chess and Female Empowerment’ conference The strongest female chess player of all time, Judit Polgar, will be the inspirational headline speaker at the 7th London Chess and Education Conference (November 30-December 1, at the Irish Cultural Centre, Hammersmith). The conference, a regular feature of the festival of events during the London Chess Classic, will feature a stellar line-up of expert speakers from around the world and focus on the ground-breaking theme ‘Chess and Female Empowerment.’ Conference participants from up to 40 countries, including female and male chess players, educators and organisers, are expected to offer insights on how to improve the gender balance in chess and examine initiatives to make the game more welcoming and accessible to women and girls at all levels.     Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 Monday 23 January - Thursday 2 February 2017 Round 3 Report: Thursday 26 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) How to Draw with Your Dad Nine players – Mickey Adams (England), Nikita Vitiugov, Vadim Zvjaginsev (both Russia), Sam Shankland (USA), Eduardo Iturrizaga (Venezuela), Emil Sutovsky (Israel), Maxime Lagarde (France), Kacper Piorun (Poland) and Ju Wenjun (China) – share the lead on 3/3 after another tough round of chess in the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar. The elite 2700+ players are still finding it very hard to impose themselves on the group of players rated 200 or 300 points below. Veselin Topalov picked up this point in his master class on Wednesday, stating that these days there is little or no difference in the quality of the first 10 to 15 opening moves between 2300-rated players and the elite. So the big names have to work harder to get their points, perhaps adopting a Carlsen-style approach, avoiding long, forcing lines in the opening and outplaying their opponents in endgames. This has been exemplified in Gibraltar by the only two 2700+ rated players to figure in the group on 3/3, namely Adams and Vitiugov, who have been grinding out the wins in long games. Mickey Adams ground out a long win against Bogdan-Daniel Deac (Romania) Perhaps the most enjoyable game for the audience in round three was the battle between Peter Svidler and Nitzan Steinberg. The 18-year-old IM from Israel has made quite an impression in Gibraltar, drawing with the second seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and now the sixth seed.
