Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal 2009, vol. 4 Body of Empire: Caterina Corner in Venetian History and Iconography Holly Hurlburt n 1578, a committee of government officials and monk and historian IGirolamo Bardi planned a program of redecoration for the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Great Council Hall) and the adjoining Scrutinio, among the largest and most important rooms in the Venetian Doge’s Palace. Completed, the schema would recount Venetian history in terms of its international stature, its victories, and particularly its conquests; by the sixteenth century Venice had created a sizable maritime empire that stretched across the eastern Mediterranean, to which it added considerable holdings on the Italian mainland.1 Yet what many Venetians regarded as the jewel of its empire, the island of Cyprus, was calamitously lost to the Ottoman Turks in 1571, three years before the first of two fires that would necessitate the redecoration of these civic spaces.2 Anxiety about such a loss, fear of future threats, concern for Venice’s place in evolving geopolitics, and nostalgia for the past prompted the creation of this triumphant pro- gram, which featured thirty-five historical scenes on the walls surmounted by a chronological series of ducal portraits. Complementing these were twenty-one large narratives on the ceiling, flanked by smaller depictions of the city’s feats spanning the previous seven hundred years. The program culminated in the Maggior Consiglio, with Tintoretto’s massive Paradise on one wall and, on the ceiling, three depictions of allegorical Venice in triumph by Tintoretto, Veronese, and Palma il Giovane. These rooms, a center of republican authority, became a showcase for the skills of these and other artists, whose history paintings in particular underscore the deeds of men: clothed, in armor, partially nude, frontal and foreshortened, 61 62 EMWJ 2009, vol. -

A perfect case study involves two important Italian families whose machinations had local implications and widespread international extensions. Their competitions are given particular point by the fact that one of the two families, the House of Savoy, was destined to become the dynasty around which the Modern State of Italy was created. This essay is, in part, a study in dynastic genealogies. But it is also a reminder of the wide impact of the crusading movements, beyond military operations and the creation of ephemeral Latin States in the Holy Land. Even though the Latin monuments of the island have been thoroughly researched, there are only sporadic works that deal with the Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture of the period. The doctoral thesis of the author in waiting to be published is the only complete work on the subject. The methodology used, involved bibliographic research and to a large degree field research to establish the measurements of all the monuments. Cyprus during the late 15th to late 16th century was under Venetian rule but the government was more interested in establishing a defensive strategy against the threat of the Ottoman Empire rather than building the fine renaissance architecture that was realized in Italy. However, small morphological details and typologies managed to infiltrate the local architecture. This was done through the import of ideas and designs by Venetian architects and engineers who travelled around the colonies or through the use of easily transferable drawings and manuals of architects such as Serlio and Palladio. -

(Luke 24:16) If the Byzantine frescoes were still in Lysi, a small village on Cyprus, they would not attract so much attention, as there is nothing special about them. The whole island is full of churches with interesting interiors1. But when the frescoes from Lysi appeared in Houston, they became unique. They are said to be the only specimen of this kind in the Western hemisphere. Why are they here near the Mexican Gulf, which is known for the numerous oil rifts that are a source of wealth? There is a direct connection between the Byzantine paintings and the rifts. The art connoisseurs, Dominique and John de Menil, who owed their fortune to the oil business, saved the exquisite mas terpieces from Cyprus. Paradoxically enough, these frescoes are not so well known This article was written when I was a Visiting Professor at Rice University as a Fellow of the Kosciuszko Foundation. Ágnes Fülemile, Budapest The Odalisque Changes in the Meaning and Reception of an Orientalising Fine Arts Theme in Europe and Hungary* As an ethnographer carrying out field work in Transylvania (Romania), I have often come across (Turkish-Arabic) Oriental themes on wall hangings in the so-called best room of village homes, surprisingly even in areas – such as the villages of Kalotaszeg or Szék (Sic) in the Mezőség region (Transylvania Heath) – that have preserved until recently many of the traditional features of their culture. Representations of ornate seraglios, gardens of paradise with peacocks, bathing odalisques, da ncing houris, and odalisques reclining on di- vans are equally popular in rural and urban Hungarian, Romanian and Gypsy homes. At the weekly local markets or at fairs throughout the countryside it is not difficult to get hold of first- or second-hand plush velvet hangings featur- ing the favourite themes of Turkish-Arabic Orientalism: Oriental beauties and Bedouin warriors on horseback, the world of harems and abductions, and lion and tiger hunting scenes. What are the roots of such depictions? What are the reasons for this continuing interest? Why are contemporary generations of former peasant communities with their own traditional culture still touched with curiosity about such themes? In what follows, I present the process of creating visual stereotypes, and the ideas that can be evoked by them, through the concrete example of an analysis of the Western European image of the Turks in the history of art and culture. DOMINI DA MAR Manifestations of the aquapelagic imaginary in Venetian symbolism and folklore [Received October 6th 2020; accepted January 26th 2021 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.101] Philip Hayward University of Technology, Sydney <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: The concept of the aquapelago, an assemblage of terrestrial and aquatic spaces generated by human activities, was first advanced in 2012 and has been subsequently developed with regard to what has been termed the ‘aquapelagic imaginary’ – the figures, symbols, myths and narratives generated by human engagement with such assemblages. Venice, a city premised on the integration of terrestrial and marine elements within an intermediate tidal lagoon, is a paradigmatic aquapelago and its artists have produced a substantial corpus of creative work reflecting various aspects of its Domini da Mar (maritime dominion). This article engages with one aspect of these engagements, the use of sirenas (mermaids), sea serpents, Neptune and associated motifs in visual and narrative culture from the Renaissance to the present. This subject is explored in a reverse chronological order. Commencing with a discussion of two striking contemporary sculptures, the article goes on to analyse modern renditions of Venetian folklore before moving back to explore a variety of Renaissance paintings and sculptures that feature mythic maritime motifs. Having followed this trajectory, the article shifts focus to examine the manner in which the prominence of the winged Lion of Saint Mark in Venetian iconography counteracts
