The population and distribution of feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) are expanding in Japan after escape or release from animal- owners. Wakayama Prefecture is one of the most typically devastated areas by this exotic carnivore, particularly in the last five years after a latent distribution for more than ten years. Official control measures of feral raccoons commenced in the summer of 2002 by several municipalities, and 531 animals collected in 12 municipalities between May 2003 and April 2005 were submitted for parasito- logical examination of gastrointestinal helminths. Detected parasites included six nematodes (Physaloptera sp. [prevalence; 5.1%], Con- tracaecum spiculigerum [0.9%], Strongyloides procyonis [25.5%], Ancylostoma kusimaense [0.8%], Arthrostoma miyazakiense [0.4%], and Molineus legerae [1.1%]), seven trematodes (Isthmiophora hortensis [4.9%], echinostomatid sp. with 34–39 collar spines [1.7%], Metagonimus takahashii [12.4%], M. yokogawai [0.8%], Plagiorchis muris [0.2%], Macroorchis spinulosus [1.9%], and Consinium ten [0.2%]), one cestode (Mesocestoides sp. [0.2%]), and six acanthocephalan spp. (Centrorhynchus bazalenticus [0.2%], Centrorhynchus teres [5.5%], Sphaerirostris lanceoides [2.4%], Plagiorhynchus ogatai [0.6%], Porrorchis oti [1.5%], and Southwelina hispida [1.9%]). Most of the collected parasites are food-borne, indigenous helminth species. Physaloptera sp. has never been recorded in indigenous wild carnivores in Japan, and resembles closely P. -

Zoonotic Nematodes of Wild Carnivores

However, human activities and politics (e.g., fragmentation of the environment, land use, recycling in urban settings) have consistently favoured the encroachment of urban areas upon wild environments, ultimately causing alteration of many ecosystems with changes in the composition of the wild fauna and destruction of boundaries between domestic and wild environments. Therefore, the exchange of parasites from wild to domestic carnivores and vice versa have enhanced the public health relevance of wild carnivores and their potential impact in the epidemiology of many zoonotic parasitic diseases. The risk of transmission of zoonotic nematodes from wild carnivores to humans via food, water and soil (e.g., genera Ancylostoma, Baylisascaris, Capillaria, Uncinaria, Strongyloides, Toxocara, Trichinella) or arthropod vectors (e.g., genera Dirofilaria spp., Onchocerca spp., Thelazia spp.) and the emergence, re-emergence or the decreasing trend of selected infections is herein discussed. In addition, the reasons for limited scientific information about some parasites of zoonotic concern have been examined. A correct compromise between conservation of wild carnivores and risk of introduction and spreading of parasites of public health concern is discussed in order to adequately manage the risk of zoonotic nematodes of wild carnivores in line with the ’One Health’ approach. Zoology Department, Faculty of Science, South Valley University Abstract: During the present study, about 294 individuals of Mabuya quinquetaeniata (the common name is bean skin, sehlia garraiya), were collected from Qena Governorate. Two species of Acanthocephala were identified. The first species is Oligacanthorhynchus ricinoides belonging to family Oligacanthorhynchidae Petrochenko, 1956. 2 out of 294 were found infected and the prevalence of infection was 0.68%. The second species is Pachysentis ehrenbergi belonging to family Oligacanthorhynchidae Petrochenko, 1956. 16 out of 294 were found infected and the prevalence of infection was 5.4%. Keywords: Description - acanthocephalan – reptiles - Qena - Governorate. I. Introduction Reptiles are most abundant in the warmer regions of the world and occupy different habitats. Reptiles have been established as a significant source of disease in humans for several decades. Today, numerous studies have reinforced the established view that reptiles are the major cause of disease in humans. One important finding is that reptiles other than terrapins are prolific carriers of salmonellae and other microorganisms, it appears that lizards and snakes may be even more likely to harbor known pathogenic micro-organisms than terrapins. Bursey and Goldberg (2003) described Acanthocephalus saurius from the small intestine of the lizard Norops limifrons. -

doi: 10.5216/rpt.v48i4.61278 CASE REPORT Oncicola luehei IN A WILD CRAB-EATING RACCOON (Procyon cancrivorus) FROM THE BRAZILIAN CERRADO SAVANNA Wilson Junior Oliveira1, André Luiz Quagliatto Santos2, Wilson Viotto de Souza2, Ana Elizabeth Iannini Custódio3, Estevam Guilherme Lux-Hoppe4 and Fernanda Rosalinski-Moraes1 ABSTRACT The occurrence of Oncicola luehei is reported in a road killed crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) near the municipality of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State. The animal was collected as part of a study that monitors wildlife road killing in the Triângulo Mineiro region. In necropsy, a single male acanthocephalan was recovered from the large intestine. The parasite was wrinkled, whitish in color, with a total body length of 15.88mm, globular proboscis (0.71 x 0.81mm) armed with 36 spiraled hooks, long lemniscus (7.30 x 0.81 mm) surpassing the anterior testis. The testes were ellipsoid in shape, disposed in tandem, the anterior measuring 1.44 x 0.53mm and the posterior 1.5 x 0.50mm. At the posterior part of the body, eight cement glands arranged in two rows of four, measuring 0.38 x 0.46 mm each. Based on this, the parasite was classified asOncicola luehei. This study represents a new host and locality records for the parasite. KEY WORDS: Helminthology; Acanthocephala; wildlife; road killing; Brazil. Crab-eating raccoons (Procyon cancrivorus) are Procyonidae carnivores that occur from southern Central America to northern Argentina, with records in all Brazilian Biomes (Reis et al., 2006). These animals have generalist diets, easily adapting to the resources habitually present and changing food behavior when necessary (Whiteside, 2009). -

ABSTRACT The acanthocephalans are helminths intestinal parasites with wide geographic distribution around the world. Their life cycle is heteroxenic that use two host: arthropods as intermediate hosts (insects and crustaceans) and vertebrates as definitive hosts (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). The genus Pachysentis (Meyer, 1931) belongs to the class Archiachanthocephala and family Oligacanthorhynchidae and comprises 10 representative species which five have been reported in Brazil as parasite of carnivores and primates. Although acanthocephalans have been reported in Nasua nasua Linnaeus, 1766 (brown-nosed coatis) but species of the genus Pachysentis have not been reported yet. The brown- nosed coatis are common medium-sized carnivore distributed in most of South America; they reach particularly high abundance in the Pantanal wetlands. The present study reports the occurrence of acanthocephalan specimens collected from the gut of two brown-nosed coatis found dead in 2007 at the Nhumirim Ranch located in the Nhecolândia, sub region of the Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. -
